Air filter options on a supercharged 2015 Tundra

I have a supercharged 2015 tundra with a TRD airbox which has that deltaP thingy that suppose to tell you when to change/clean your filter (gauge on top). Which BTW never seems to measure enough deltaP to change the filter. I've been going by mileage and my visual "eyeball" dirt gauge. I wonder if it is even working or is the TRD PRT043-00090 cotton filter never restriction enough even when dirty? It will reset to the top (spring loaded) but it never seems to reach the change/clean mark. Anybody care to comment on this?

I'm thinking maybe I should just change back to a standard paper element like WIX. Problem is when I measure the TRD filter it is bigger than what they call for on the stock 5.7 L Tundra, the

WIX WA10085. Does anybody know if WIX make a filter for the TRD airbox?

Some of what I've read on this site states that while the TRD maybe less restrictive (lower static pressure) it has poor filtration when compared to the WIX. Any drawbacks for going back to a paper element on a supercharged Tundra? Thanks for the help.

PS -- To add insult to injury the TRD filter shows to be discontinued and not available, at least on the multiple websites I checked.

Wow, 139 views and not even one reply! I have got to say I am disappointed! No one else in this community has a supercharged Tundra or some knowledge to share?? Well I'll contribute what I've found out so far since I've been looking into this. The bottom of the filter measures 11 1/8 inches x 11 1/2 inches x 1 3/8 inches. This is the dimension that faces downward into the airbox. The top of the filter measures 11 3/4 inches x 12 1/4 inches. This is the dimension that suppose to pick up the perimeter edge of the airbox and provide a seal. Notice I said "... suppose to ....", more on that later. The airbox dimension on the inside (clearance) is 11 3/16 inches x 11 3/4 inches. I've been wanting to change this filter because of what I've read on this site and others about it's poor filtering capability for little to no benefit in airflow or engine performance. Furthermore as I stated in my original post the pressure drop gauge has never shown to the "clean or replace" mark on the gauge since I've had the truck. That tells me it either doesn't work or the filter is not restrictive enough to develop that amount of pressure drop. I've checked the filter visually and it looks clean (i.e. still red in color) and you can see plenty of "daylight" thru it. Only think I noticed recently is a couple of small leaves trapped in the folds, which can be easily shaken out. So basically I just change it when it gets blacker with obvious crud on it. Now back to the search for a replacement. I've called WIX (since that was highly recommended in a post on this site) and they only carry the

WA10085 which fits the stock airbox, but is about an inch short in one direction for the TRD airbox. I've called Toyota and they have a new/replacement PN for the TRD oiled cotton version, but no paper element for the TRD airbox. I contacted AFe about their

31-10146 - aFe Power Magnum FLOW Pro DRY S Air Filter, but have yet to hear back from them. This is suppose to be a higher flowing dry washable element. I found a thread that had one post on another site that claimed they used this AFe filter in their 2014 supercharged Tundra, but the same thread also had other conflicting information. So I'm still not certain this option is a fit. Now to the bigger concern. If you look closely at the pictures I provided you will notice that the TRD filter does not hold it's shape well in the direction of the corrugated folds. Makes sense because it is not stiff in that direction and it bows inward creating a curve along both sealing surfaces. Begs the question once you clamp the upper cover of the airbox down what the filter is doing along those sealing surfaces. Probably sucking in unfiltered air! This is a poor design and a POS! They should have used a molded in sheet metal stiffener grill like I've since on other filters or use a stiffer frame design. Even the new replacement TRD PN has the same problematic design! The AFe appears to be the same (no stiffener grill). But the WIX paper element filters do have one; but they don't fit the TRD airbox. Hence the dilemma ... no better alternative filter design that I can find so far for a higher performing supercharged engine. SHAME ON YOU TOYOTA and TRD this is not acceptable! If anyone cares to chime in and contribute please do. If you have a supercharged Tundra I'd appreciate hearing from you and knowing what type of air filter you are running. Sounds like you have an 07-13 air box. Common on supercharged trucks, and has the filter-minder, 14+ TRD intake does not. Buy whatever filter from 07-13, plenty to choose from, oem Toyota is very good. Never had a use for filter-minder on a N/A engine, kinda pointless, would have to be really dirty to move the gauge.

 

I have the same silly filter as op, i hate it. So will a stock paper filter from 2007-2013 work in the trd airbox?

I looked up the stock OEM air filter for those model yrs. you reference and it calls out Toyota PN 17801-0S010. The is a paper element with the following dimensions ‎12.7 x 11.9 x 2.1 inches. Is this the filter you are saying will work in the TRD airbox? As I stated in my post the TRD I have in there now measures 11 3/4 x 12 1/4 inches, so I do not see how the filter you are calling for will fit, the dimension don't match. Please advise.

 

The lower air box is stock 07-13, only the lid is TRD. Your dimensions for PN 17801-0S010 are wrong. Actual dimensions-

The overall dimensions for the TRD filter are 11 3/4 inches x 12 1/4 inches x 1 3/8 inches dp. The inside of my lower airbox measures 11 3/16 inches x 11 3/4 inches. So the stock OEM filter you list will not fit.

On a side note, I finally got a hold of AFe filters on the phone and the rep said they did not make a filter for my supercharged Tundra. He further stated that during those model years to add to the confusion, Toyota made two different airboxes. When I called my local Toyota dealership's parts dept. they said they only carry the TRD filter for my Tundra and do not carry a OEM paper element. So unless someone on here with another 2015 supercharged Tundra can add to the conversation with what they are using (which would be great) .... if not then I guess I'm SOL!

So the OEM filter measured yesterday - 11 11/16 inches x 12 1/4 inches didn’t help? The dimensions you found/using are for the cardboard box the filter is packaged in.

Your TRD intake isn’t special, it’s the same as rest of us. The discontinued TRD panel filter you currently use also fits stock non-TRD intake 07-13 air box. AGAIN - uses the stock lower air box with new TRD lid, in your case the 07-13 lower air box. Pics of stock 07-13 lower air box, inside dimensions are 11 1/8 inches x 11 7/8 inches. Last pic stock size filter fitting perfect inside air box.

Sounds like i just need to buy a wix filter and give it a go… will try to do this next week and report back. Cleaning/Oiling a k&n is not my idea of a good time.

 

WIX 49010 works in my airbox. Just installed it today. Thanks for everyone's help.
