Well, now that my pulse has slowed and I've been thinking and envisioning things, I am less confident about a GFC purchase. That's ten grand for a minimalist camping kit... shouldn't minimalist camping be minimal cost too?

If I'm going to spend that kind of money I think the overall utility of a cargo trailer wins out. The thing is, for a portion of that cost I can camp in a relatively nice tent, with the same camp gear, and save the money for longer term goals. Not sure That's what I want, but it's definitely an option.

Pretty much why I skipped over the GFC also. An the fact you can't store all your sleeping gear in it and close it so you have to make your bed and break it down with every move. For the price it's almost worth it to go higher to a FWC shell with heat built in, etc,... Could about buy 3 of my toppers for the price of the GFC, including having to pick it up (it's half way across the country) and pay for install. Plus if I had a warranty issue, again, GFC is half way across the country.

These are just the few things that ruled out the GFC for me and it started with that price. The Alucab canopy camper is around that price and has dealers closer to me so if I was gonna pay that money it would be for one of those. So many accessories for it also including a fire place.

My friend converted a cargo trailer into a sweet little mobile motel dirt bike hauler. He has a wood burning fire place in it. The bed raises and lowers from the ceiling. He can haul up to 4 bikes in it. Has AC also. Sink, pipe shower on the roof, and soon to have solar. It's a sweet setup but would not do well off road.

It's easy to get caught up in all this fancy camping gear when, there are so many options an as you mentioned, a good tent and all the gear you already own is just fine. Lord knows I have been caught up in it and should have bought a topper right off the bat or just continued camping in a tent. Unfortunately I got lazy and old and don't like setting things up. Which is what camping is all about I guess, I lost my way! (really just lazy:D) It is what it is.

The appeal of a RTT, GFC, or a cargo trailer is the ease of setup in wind or rain, and being off the ground. Wyoming is windy AF and setting up a ground tent or wall tent in it is damn near impossible as a one man operation.

I've been out and about and many times wished I had gear with me so I could just stay where I was. That was the appeal of a RTT. Boil it down and a RTT is the budget GFC alternative. If I hadn't had all the issues I'd be a happy camper in a RTT. Pun intended. :p

I don’t know man. I have numerous cargo trailers for my businesses and while they are good for hauling gear, they can be a royal pain. The rooftops on the ones I have are paper thin and cannot support anything on top. I’m sure there maybe some with some sort of rooftop capability, but not on the ones I have. Maybe I’m just turned off from all the hassles I’ve had over the decades but a trailer type is just not as appealing as a truck mounted option. Obviously your needs may vary but just my .02.

I may not have communicated clearly, but I would not be putting anything on top of the trailer. The trailer would store the gear at the front, RZR parked behind, and then at camp the RZR lives outside. The inside of the trailer becomes a cabin for cots and such. My clumsy ass would fall of the roof, and that's not fun.

Their prices have skyrocketed but I tried to talk my wife into building out one of these off-road trailers instead of buying a TT.

Yup. I like the idea, but there's so much stuff I would not want on it, and you pay for it.

Take a Rock Solid trailer that's built more durable and set how I want for $11-12K and I think I could get the ground clearance up enough for way less than Colorado Trailers Inc. is charging.

I don't want a roof rack, generator hitch, aluminum interior walls, 4 foot ceiling lights, etc.

I do want 12 inch on center floors at a minimum, walls and ceiling would be nice too, extra floor D Rings so I don't have straps front to back inside, barn doors on the rear instead of a ramp, and a mostly screwless exterior with thicker aluminum.

If you do take this route be sure to plan it out ahead of time and inspect the trailer before purchasing. I have a 5x10 that was manufactured by one of the Pace sub companies that I built out for a large standby generator. The flooring and walls used fairly thin paneling and I had to build a flooring and truss system to properly support the generator, ventilation and exhaust system. In hindsight I would’ve selected a different trailer but lesson learned.

Believe me, if I learned anything from Roofnest, I will inspect the shit out of anything like this.

Did you follow that link for renown trailers? They are just a dealer for Rock Solid as RS doesn't sell direct to the consumer. There are other options and I would talk to RS as much as possible rather than the dealer.

Anyway, you can select the panel thickness and the frame spacing. Same for the floor. Beefy built and a 5 year warranty compared to 3 for most companies.

Might be different on a PC, but I wish it showed the item cost with the item. Not a huge deal, and it makes it easier to just build on a wishlist.

They also state up front price may vary, and that doesn't fly for me. Price it where you want it. Then I will buy or not on my budget preferences. Don't wanna put a deposit on something and then have the price change at the end. Bad deal as a consumer.
