It is crumby. It feels like we're entering an age of disposable vehicles. So many electronics and dependent parts, I don't see a future where cars last 15-20 years any longer. Dependability is still top on my list but maybe that's not as important to the everyday American anymore?

Speaking about this, does anyone have any insights on whether things like spark plugs are easily changed by the owner or does it have to be taken in?

Luckily very few Toyota truck owners rely on their vehicles for work or as a daily driver….Jk

In all seriousness I’ll wager most of those with deposits down or already have the ‘22 in the driveway would say this is a concern. I was pretty close to stroking a check on one myself, but remain concerned enough to pump the brakes.

Toyota will still probably sell all they can make until long after they have sorted this out, but I doubt that is much solace to those mentioned above at the moment.

May feel like it, but not borne out by data. Average age of cars on US roads has never been older. Way longer lasting and way way more reliable. While many wax nostalgic for carburetors and lead fuel, truth is most of what Detroit put out in the last half of 20th century would look like the Bluesmobile at the end of the movie at 200k miles(if it made it that far.)

My 98 4Runner was sold at 386k miles. Unfortunately, I did have to tell the buyer a motor had finally worn out. I mean it was only the power radio antenna motor, but still!

Why would they continue to sell cars with a defect? It could end up costing them more in the long run.

Shit will hit the fan once we have owners reporting turbo issues at >10k mi.

By Buddy runs a Toyota dealer. He told me this week they are starting to see a few of these issues come by now. That's why I'm sticking to my 5.7 2008

I completely agree. They continue to make vehicles harder for you to work on yourself. It seems like they just want people to lease a new car every 3 years and just always have a car payment.

I know some people have the sentiment of "if you don't own the Gen 3 or have an issue with your Gen 3, then don't come on here and bitch about it"

But I think we should make a big stink. I hope that these problems get aired out beyond the forums and FB.
I'd like to see the demand for these trucks ease up a bit so I could possibly consider one.

We're in a difficult period for ICE vehicles, they are being mandated into complexity that affects their reliability. If it weren't for range and charging concerns, I'd probably buy a Rivian, as EVs are inherently more reliable.

I know Toyota will fix it. But I also think Toyota should extend everyone's warranty, if Titan can have 100k bumper to bumper, why not Tundra?
Anyways, I wish more people would get cold feet, I have yet to see a Tundra in person

Ok, that makes 3 in 2 weeks reported here. My point is that we don't know the actual incidence. Tons of speculation and reposting, of course, but I was just asking where the "daily" data was coming from because I'd like to know the actual numbers and percentage of Tundras out there with it. If you have real numbers, please share. I agree Toyota is handling the PR poorly. They should get out in front of it. But honestly, while it is so popular to talk about here, the percentage of the truck-buying public that knows about it is very low. (BTW, 1200 miles on my 2022 with not a single problem.)

We're in a difficult time overall, not just for ICE vehicles. I know, the party line is that everything is going to be electrified soon. Maybe, but, in addition to range concerns, it will be with us kicking and screaming once we realize the full costs.

I just did the math for an EV trip in a Mustang Mach E, 1050 miles, 2.5 kWh/mile, uses 420 kWh, charging at Electrify America at $0.41/kWh. "Fuel" cost=~$175, the same as my Tacoma that gets 21 mpg would do on that trip. Whilst doing the same drive in a Honda CR-V, which is about equivalent vehicle to the Mach E, would cost only $110... at current gasoline prices of course. So EVs are going to be a hard sell for many of us except for local driving where you can charge cheaply at home. The problem is the middlemen like EA that are going to pull out hefty profits for what amounts to placing their electricity ATM machines on someone else's grid... and skimming hefty fees for every transaction.

And doing the math, that $0.41/kWh charging cost is the equivalent of ~$5.60 gasoline. We aren't used to thinking about this yet... but may well be soon.

The other thing I want to know is if any of these people with the turbo issues are just daily driving or were they out abusing the engine? I just wonder if people are abusing the engine before its properly broken in?

that doesnt matter, even if you punched it all over and roasted the tires, turbos shouldn't fail.

if they are that weak then this entire platform is doomed

I don't disagree, my question is simply if we know how these people are treating the vehicle when initial failure occurred? It's easy to say "LOOK AT THE PROBLEM!" but good data comes from knowing the circumstances when the issue first manifested and then go from there.

I was driving mine normally down the highway. I've seen other people talk about this too how they drive careful and it came on. Surely someone with this issue drives more aggressive, but that doesn't seem to matter.

Remember a few happened in the first 100 miles. A couple happened at under 50 miles on the odometer.

Well, here is my update with my Tundra engine shutting down while driving. The dealership was all over this issue as well as the Toyota engineers. They were able to pull the event but they are at a lost for whatever caused it. Toyota say there was only one other vehicle that experienced the same issue a while back but has not had a repeat event since. They did a very detailed inspection and diagnostic of all the systems. The dealership told me that the engineers were able to remote into the truck themselves. Turbo was fine. All electrical checked out as well as software. At least it is all documented by Toyota in case it does happen again. If it does, I will demand a new Truck replacement. Only two Trucks experienced this same issue of engine shutting down while driving.

I sure hope it doesnt happen again to you man, but damn I would not want to drive around thinking it might. Funny, how's it always, "there was only 1 other truck", ya right.

Currently, home charging an EV is the cheapest.
The moment you start paying for superchargers out in public, EV cost the same per mile as the average vehicle, meaning my wife's Corolla would be much cheaper to take on a road trip.

I worry what happens when the hoopla and subsidies around BEV dies down. If it makes electricity more expensive, we all pay for it, even without owning a BEV.

Hydro companies charge based on delivery service costs centered around density. If it costs $$$ to bring electricity to XXX people then it should cost $$ dollars to bring electricity to XXXX people and vice versa $$$$ to XX people. If infrastructure is there and people using it are there.....

The elephant in the room is the lack of investment in OIL/GAS.
The lack of investment in this area due to the focus on BEV and Electricity the last couple years, is already evident.

Vehicles account for only 25% of Oil/Gas use in the world.
    Airplanes, roofing shingles, personal products.

    https://www.ranken-energy.com/index.php/products-made-from-petroleum/

The cost of Dino fuels in making products and supplies we will use many years from today will increase due to the lack of investment.
