Not quite. Somebody offering you $10K more is different than you demanding an additional $10K.

Sounds like you purchased a base model truck. I can’t blame you for wanting something else.

No one is requiring you to buy the truck. This is basic supply and demand. That TRD Pro is worth whatever some idiot is willing to pay. I don't have any sympathy for someone paying over MSRP for a vehicle. That is their fault.

Not a good analogy. You as the selling homeowner aren’t demanding the $10k as a market adjustment for your home. And car/truck buyers aren’t submitting padded offers hoping to beat others’ offers the way homebuyers are.

Dealers are actually starting to get slapped around a bit by the manufacturers, which I think is great.
That still doesn’t mean that the dealers aren’t violating their contracts with manufacturers by misrepresenting them or painting them in a bad light by up-charging out of greed.

That's a fair point and one I have no idea about. If there are contracual issues that should be addressed. That said, I still don't feel bad if someone is silly enough to pay over MSRP for what amounts to a want, not a need. If someone is willing to overpay just because they must have the latest and greatest Tundra then that's on them. If no one was willing to overpay then the dealers would have 2 choices, either lower their price, or let it sit on their lot.

It’s about 6k more than my limited build. Granted my limited is as loaded as u can make it at 61789 MSRP crewmax, longbed, TRD OR (the most expensive version)

the extra 6k to get a pro at MSRP if possible seems ok to me. It will definitely hold it’s value more than any other level of tundra

This is why the Tesla (and many other new electric vehicle) and formally Saturn model is so great. The price is what the price is. No haggling, no deals, no ADM, that's it, take it or leave it.

Oooooh. More info on this please! I am not buying anything, but I would love to hear that dealers being greedy are being told as much by the automakers. Feel free to PM to keep from cluttering this thread.

Back on topic of the TRD Pro pricing and pricing for the iForceMax in general I think Toyota took a swing and missed.

Give this auto market a year or two to cool back down and normalize, and I think Toyota is going to have a tough time making the case for buying a 1/2 ton hybrid that doesn’t get better fuel economy, and costs as much as a 3/4 ton diesel in the trims it’s offered in.

If you want to go in the other direction, look at Ford. They actually allowed dealers to sell reservation spots for the Lightning.

I agree that people who overpay are generally not very smart. But how many regular people go into a dealership and take them at their word that this is the price, that everyone’s doing it, that they have to do ADM because the market is crazy, and they’re not making as much money because of covid, etc? People think, “There’s no way this nice, professional-looking man is lying to me. Surely, he’s not allowed to. It’s 2022; surely I can walk into a dealership and get straight facts!”

The thing is, yeah they are supposed to be truthful. And since they’re not, Ford and GM (so far they’re the only ones I know about) are starting to lay the law down on some of their sleazier dealers.

I think the overpaying thing is a LOT more of people being lied to and a lot less “I just gotta have it at any price,” although I’m sure the latter happens a lot, particularly for rarer trims (Raptor, etc).

    GM video:
Ford laying down the law: “The Dealer shall avoid any in every way any “bait”, deceptive, misleading, confusing, or illegal advertising or business practices.”

Overpriced ego trim. It's a Toyota cash grab bro truck.

Toyota makes nothing comparable to the Raptor. The Tremor is what you should be comparing if your measuring against Ford.

Nobody says they did, so no need to bold it out. What they did do is price it at the level of the raptor.

Yeah priced like a Raptor, but can’t do Raptor like things….

Also priced pretty close to some off road oriented trims of 3/4 ton trucks including diesels and cannot pull like a diesel….

Maybe I’ll come around because I’m a Toyota fan, but this one is a tough sell at the moment.

Maybe it can. I mean, with the turbo issues it might be able to strand you on the side of the road just as well as a Ford can. :notsure:

It's a common comparison made (in general). And now that it's priced the same the debate will continue to ensue,, which may be the mind game Yota is playing. Charge the same price and people will automatically start viewing them similarly.

It is a marketing strategy used before.

    LOL, well played sir.

Come to think of it this summer the only broken down trucks I observed on the shoulder were all Ford’s. Every single one was an older 6.0L Powerstroke, I counted 5 of them this summer. It was weird.

Toyota is marketing to a different crowd than ford. Ford is selling the raptor as a badass offroader. Toyota is selling the pro to guys who want the top of the line tundra.

It’s tough to say, oh just buy a 3/4 ton instead. There aren’t any of those on any lots either

I just picked up my Tundra today from Livermore Toyota which got a brand new Harness...$9876. They had a 22' 1794 in the showroom for almost 74k. It had a 10k mark up. They also had a TRD Pro 4runner with a 15k mark up. I see those two just collecting dust at that price. Only a sucker would pay that much over.

So I just dropped 70k on my 22 Platinum and I'm ok with that. I had a 2011 baseline Tundra before that, so this is an upgrade in every possible way imaginable. Inflation is a bitch, no doubt about it. For the first time, dealerships have more demand than supply, and that isn't getting better for Tundras with the recent labor shortage at the factory announced last week. Supply and demand principles have not changed. All these new vehicles are chock full of computers, sensors, and parts that need tons of technical parts to function. Turns out, almost everything on Earth needs computers and electronics in it now, so the whole world is fighting for supply of these microchips and wafers. Google it, the concept is not new.

Everyone's finances are different as well. Some of you call us insane for paying these prices and that's your opinion, which I respect. That being said, without speaking for anyone else, but I imagine those of us purchasing these are similar; I can afford it. My 2011 was probably going to last another year before timing chain popped and who knows what else. I have a good job with a great credit score, so I got a 2% flat interest rate and I can make $1010 payments without flinching. Paid 5k for the dealer mark up too, did that sting, sure...but I can't blame the auto industry for taking advantage of inflation and the current shortage...EVERY business is doing it. So I can complain about it and NOT buy things, or just keep living life. I don't like paying 15 bucks a pound for my ribeyes, but I'm still gonna eat. You only live once and all my money saved isn't gonna buy me much in the afterlife. So if your lifestyle can support it, do what you want to do and don't judge others, simply because you aren't in their shoes.

I like that I have a truck that few people are going to have, especially in my area. Everywhere I park, I have other trucks doing laps in the parking lot to check it out and that feels good. Did I pay more than I wanted, sure, but I'm not mad about it.

That's the key. I don't care how much other people pay for their trucks for more than anything than gauging what I could expect to pay. If it's more than I am willing to pay, then I don't buy it. I don't fault anyone that does. Your money, your choice, and I hope you love the truck!
