Well, in June it'll make 3 years in my Tundra. I love this truck, and with the investment of a GFC she won't be going anywhere. The only thing I would possible consider would be adding another vehicle.

I look forward to seeing it once it's "finished" (we all know a build is never truly complete.) Also as you already know cars are my thing so there's a good chance that I've driven the car you're curious about and there is a 100% chance that I have read and watched reviews on whatever car you are looking at. For example I drove a Chevy SS, was not impressed whatsoever. It was an automatic, cannot speak for the manual.

Jeep Cherokee XJ! That's what I want as a second vehicle. But all of the ones for sale around here are always 2WD... :(

Those Subarus are sweet. I saw my ex-girlfriend driving one in town the other day. Figures she gets one after we've split up!

Yeah, the SS would only be good as a stick. It's got loads of power, but it's so heavy you need the stick to make it fun. (That's what she said!)

Some options on my list in no particular order:

    1. 2020+ Toyota Supra with the V6. Zero practicality, but I think it's gorgeous, sounds sexy, and would be a blast to drive. (This is the sexy, crazy redhead that you know is trouble, but your blood isn't being pumped to your brain. She's gonna kill you, but you'll die happy.)
    2. 2017 Chevy SS with the 6 speed stick. Last production year for the fewest kinks. High power RWD with a stick is a special kind of fun. Not going to carve canyons, but it'll be entertaining. It's a fast grandpa car. (This is the smokin' MILF. Treat her right and she'll show you what a cougar can do.)
    3. Tesla Model 3 Long Range version. Slick, techy, and you can't beat the MPGs. Added cost of getting a charger installed at home, cold hurts batteries, and batteries determine the lifespan of the car. (This is the high maintenance girl that is out of your league, but somehow you still think you have a shot with her.)
    4. Subaru Outback Wilderness in silver or white. This brings utility to the table and still keeps it fun. Not gonna be super fast, but it's going to last and go just about anywhere. (This is the girl next door. Not the hottest, but also less likely to go crazy on you. Marriage material here.)
    5. Jeep Wrangler 2 door with a stick. MPG won't be mentioned, but it's going to be capable. (This is the tomboy girl friend that you've always kinda flirted with. She's not super girly and a bit awkward, but you know you could have lots of fun together.)

The right vehicle is worth a plane ticket. Especially if you can use your travel distance to negotiate the price down.

Lol I like your list and comparisons. Without a doubt if I had the option to have two new vehicles my second one would be a Jeep Wrangler unlimited hands down.
He's right you know. Either fly or see if you can convince someone to go on a road trip with you and they can drive the support vehicle.

Yeah, I thought I'd do it for a bit of humor. The actual funny part is that it kinda steered me toward the Outback even more. It's the only one I tagged as marriage material.

As for the Jeep, the Unlimited is the 4 door right? What would make you pursue that over a 2 door?

Only reason for the four-door is because on quite a few adventures I have two other people with me plus I'm always carrying a boatload of stuff to be prepared ( clothes, first aid, tools, recovery, etc.) I think I told this story on here before, but to continue using your ladies analogy, I drove a Jeep Wrangler unlimited and fell madly in love. It was like I found my soulmate. I was all ready to put in an order for an orange one. But then I found out she had that one fatal flaw. It's like I found out the love of my life loved killing neighborhood pets when I wasn't around. I made the mistake of going on the Jeep forums and they had an entire section dedicated to problems with thousands upon thousands of posts. It was absolutely unreal how many they were and how literally not one part on the entire vehicle was safe from showing up in that section. Even things that have no reason having issues in modern times. I was absolutely heartbroken. It was to this day my favorite vehicle that I've ever driven and I still think about it often. And I realized the warranty would take care of problems but, and this is a big but, I often find myself in areas that are in the middle of nowhere with no cell reception and it's -20. A warranty is not going to do me any good at that moment in time. Not to mention who wants to always be driving a loaner while it's at the shop.

Get the M3P. Don’t get me wrong, the M3LR is fun! The M3P is funner lol. The cold doesn’t hurt them too much. Yes, you notice it but power doesn’t suffer so long as it’s not below 50%. Even then, only matters if you’re running for time / speed. Many energy providers offer rebates for the charger, hell even Xcel Energy will do the install free for you, but you’re charged monthly for their equipment. There’s also $1k (?) tax rebate. I’m curious to see how much we get back this year with it as there are other taxable items I found via Google. Typical batteries on the car are 300k-1M so long as ur not being dumb with constant super charging as it’ll wear it out much faster from the constant heat. The new ones have the 12v that’s said to last the length of the vehicle, where as of mine is usually like a standard vehicle battery 3/36k. I replaced mine a few months ago as I could not locate a date on the battery and didn’t want to be screwed waiting for a tow. In fact, Tesla came to my house to change it for me and then replaced my charging pins on it (recall). I can’t believe I waited as long as I did to get one. The constant over the air updates are awesome! Tesla can even log into ur car remotely to help troubleshoot something if needed. The free gps, sentry cameras, and now jukebox (2019+) are great too! Lol I programmed my “light show” (free). Here’s an example (u can change them anytime u want, or even make ur own)
We took it out last night, hit “lightshow” cranked it up and exited the vehicle. People are really confused when they see it at night, and nobody in it and it’s rolling it’s windows up and down, rotating lights, etc lol

My vehicles live outside. No garage. Not even a carport. Sub 40 degrees even in summer at times, and winters are below freezing for weeks at a time. I'm in the middle of nowhere so the local power company gives zero f**ks about your car. On your own for a charger. The $10K more than the Subie that a used Long Range Tesla costs will buy lots of fuel/maintenance.

Not poo pooing the Tesla. I think it's awesome, I wanna play with one, and I hope you spoil us with updates and pics. I'm just playing devil's advocate.

Many don’t have a garage for their Tesla, but still can get power to it. I warm it up, or cool it down via the app. I charge in off peak hours, and it’s ready to go by 0630, with my temp of 72*, or whatever I set it to. No diff changes, no oil changes, no plugs to replace, nada. Just really ur cabin air filter, and tire rotation and maybe windshield wiper fluid lol. It’s also set to turn on the front and passenger side seats heat based on temp. I can control the rear seats (including middle) heat temps from 1-3 as individual too.

Yeah, I know I could get power to it. They can do a charger on a pole type of thing. The features in them are super cool and neat, but so are the ones in my phone... that I never use. I'm 37 going on 85.

My concern for temps isn't about me, it's about the batteries for the car. The LR has just enough range to make it viable as I make a 300 mile trip to see family a few times a year, and if I'm not hauling the RZR the other rig would have to be able to make it without more than one stop. There's a couple places along the way to charge, so even with cold and wind I think the LR could do it. Question is, how long could it do it? Will the battery keep that range for the 10+ years I want to keep the vehicle?

Truly, the biggest obstacle is the price. They are just so expensive. That's going to murder me to put plates and insurance on it.

Yes, it’ll make it. Many so cross country trips with it. When you enter ur destination it’ll show you supercharging stations and tell u which ones u need to stop at to charge along the way.
Mines a 2018, and I paid around $300 in reg. My new one will be much higher, but it varies based on what county u live in. I forget the battery degradation “rule of thumb” but yes it’ll start to very gradually take away some. Take in mind, this also varies per day (just like an ICE vehicle) based on driving habits, acceleration etc. I never charge to 100%. I charge to 90% and in cold temps, with my constant NASCAR driving, I’ll get it down to around 70%. If I add in an office trip, maybe 50’s-60’s % in cold temps. Ur only supposed to charge to 100% for road trips. It’s just like ur phone- it charges smartly to not “over charge” it.

Oh I figure it will make it, but the route is heavy with wind and not flat. You're a step ahead of me if you've forgotten the battery degradation rule, because I've never known it. The thing is, come the warm weather time is when I will want to be taking the Tundra out with the RZR, or going camping, or driving trails. The time that is nicest to the Tesla battery is when I would use it the least. Winter cold would be it's most used time, and that comes with the challenges of snow as well. There are times that a car simply cannot get out of my driveway. I traded my beloved WRX for this reason. As a commuter I think the Tesla would be badass. I just don't know about long term viability. Also, if it breaks, I can't work on it. Neither can anyone within 100 miles of me. This presents a challenge.

As for registration, just for perspective, my Tundra was a bit over $800 when new, and a year later it was over $600, with it's most recent set of stickers running over $500. I've got a couple more years that it'll drop, but in Wyoming it does hit a minimum number after 5 years and that's what you'll pay for the life of the vehicle. Vehicle registration in WY is something like 3rd most expensive in the nation if what I heard was correct. A tesla that MSRPs for double what my truck did is going to show that on the tags. Now, this is obviously going to be offset at an annual level by the fuel savings.

Funny thing, a buddy sent me this video this morning. I've got it set to start where he mentions Tesla issues (I had no idea about any of this).

EDIT: Took the video down. Hadn't fully watched it and didn't know it touched politics. Please don't ban me! :sorry:

I think it was the 4th comment on that video that caught my eye. Not sure I agree that Ford did it, but I agree with the sentiment that was clarified in a response to it.

All this Tesla talk has me really wanting to look into one. We would need an suv, so model X or Y I believe.
For all the flaws WA State has, our annual registration is $80-$110 per vehicle. We actually passed a $30 car tab tax in 2019 but it was found unconstitutional by the Supreme Court.
It would be garaged, with 240v power right there. The only downside I have, like Adam I'm a long ways from a qualified shop (2+ hours)

U really don’t need a shop…I would stay away from anything pre 2015 based on computer. order the Y today, brand new and you’ll wait a year…plenty of time lol.
thr X has lambo doors and can get the plaid edition. The Y u can do the accel boost, or just get the MY3P. Play around on Tesla.com for upgrades and to see pricing, rebates

This is based on minimal maintenance, right? What about if you do need a shop? If something goes wrong and it needs work, is towing and such covered under warranty? How long is the warranty?

I would buy new, unless there is a substantial price difference in a 2-3 y/o car with under 30k miles.
Model Y it is, no lambo doors for this introvert.

Not entirely sure if the breakdown, but we pay 282/mo for full coverage, and glass on both vehicles. No tickets. We also have homeowner ins with them

I thought they were gullwing doors to make it easier to get in and out of. More headroom and less space needed to open them. If they were offered on the Model 3 I'd want them, but the other models are WAY out of any price I would be willing to pay.

There’s a lot of room in each model. Tons of storage too.

Damn. I'm mistaken. It's the rear doors that have that. My bad. You can see how it basically moves the roofline to the middle of the car for entry and exit. Less likely to hit your head if you get somebody else to drive you around.
