What A/T tires to choose

looking for some good AT tires, narrowed it down to my top 5 choices, would like some input, 70% in town/highway 30% off road. road is mostly deep holes, rocks, and tree roots/branches. already have a good set of dedicated winter tires, these will be spring summer tires. vote and comment on your favorite,

i like the aggressive look of the coopers

 

My buddy has Nitto Tera Grappler G2s in 295/70/18 and likes them. They look like they are a little bit smaller than my Cooper S/T Maxx also in 295/70/18, but my aftermarket wheels are 9.5" wide and has a +25 offset compared to his stock TRD Off-Road wheels that are 8" wide and have a +60 offset, even though he added spacers, they still tuck under the wheel well.

I love my Coopers, also had the inner tread blocks siped for better grip on ice, although nothing sticks to ice. Wanted Duratracs but they don't make them in 295/70/18. Had Toyo AT2 Extremes in 285/65/18 and they were pretty good as well.

 

I’ve had the Cooper st Maxx. Little loud on the highway but they performed very well in all conditions. Generally speaking, they are heavier than some of the others on your list.

 

Don’t count out the Falken Wildpeak AT3. My favorite tire so far that I have had. Very quiet on the road and capable off road…the price has gotten a little steeper…but still less expensive than more popular brands. 50k mile warranty. Worth checking out!

Just bought a set of the all new Mickey Thompson Baja Boss ATs. They have great reviews. Can't wait.

 

Nitto G2's. They are (at least the set I had and the set I'm now running) made in Japan.

 

What size? What properties are most important to you?

 

They aren't on your list but I would give the Toyo AT3's a look as well. I love mine. Of the tires you listed I would go with the Coopers.

Now that I know much better, I've learned to go with Michelin LTX AT2s, its about the performance on And off road. They just get after it, no matter what they Look like. Luck deciding and remember many shops will let you Try tires for a few weeks and swap out if not satisfied (like Discount tire for example).

 

only have had AT tires in my 25 years of driving trucks in mid-west Canada with a true 4-season year. toyo at3 have been the best of any i've had.

 

The Yokohama X-AT is one of the tires I'm currently reviewing. Will be putting up the 20,000 mile video any day now. They've been great tires so far. Smooth, balance well, very rugged sidewalls, good wear. They do hum a little on the highway.

The Falken Wildpeak A/T3W is my #1 tire of all time so far. Haven't found anything yet to outperform it.

Also currently reviewing the Cooper Discoverer ATP II tires. Just started running them recently so it'll be a while. So far the snow traction has been amazing. They are whisper quiet, balanced well, and handle very good. I'm surprised at how good they are. I think they're honestly better than the AT3 sibling.

Do NOT buy Shitto (Nitto) tires. They are horrendous. Wear is poor, traction is poor in foul weather, balancing issues, etc. They had so many 3 star reviews on Nitto's website that they revamped the entire site a couple years back and surprise surprise, the reviews all disappeared like magic.

 

Another vote for the Wildpeaks!!

 

you may want to look at the new Mickey Thompson Baja Legend EXP also..... i floated back and forth for the last month...... it came down to Geolandar X-AT and the EXP in the end for me..... I really like the look of the X-AT..... but my M/T EXP's should be here tomorrow...... I'll be dead honest and say i got a good deal on the Mickey's or i would have done the Yoko's...... 4WP has a good sale and the Mickey's were $45ea less.......

 

Big fan of Falkens WP...Solid and true

 

Since you already have winter tires and dont have to worry about ice performance, BFGs all the way. They are also 3 peak rated in case you get caught with your pants down before putting on the winter tires. There is a reason why they are #1 seller.

 

Those EXP are a good looking tire.

 

I have had good luck with my 295/70/18....my only beef is too loud on the highway. Will definitely go another route when I switch out...

I was speaking with the guy at a very reputable Toyota shop here in San Diego - I have Mickey ATZs now and they are getting road thrashed; they recommended Yoko and Toyo ATIII all the way.

 

I was between KO2 and Toyo AT3 for the longest time. Repeatedly hear KO2s suck on wet pavement and the tread pattern is outdated. The AT3 also has a 65k mi warranty, the Ko2 is only 50k. I went with AT3 and will have them mounted soon.

 

any updates on the at-x?

 

I was seduced by the Toyo R/T Trail tires... Got them in 285/75/17 and love them so far.

 

Got nitto recons and love them so far.
