Warm here but I do have my puffy vest on.

 

Apparently a quarter inch of snow was too much for these rear wheel drive vehicles in my hood. Found them abandoned from last night.

This is why I would never buy a RWD truck living here. Doesn't work when every other road has a steep hill. I had to put my truck in 4WD to back up and go another route.

 

-2 when I left the house at 8 this morning. Been below 0 at night about half of the last 2 weeks. I don't want to see my propane bill this month.

 

I'm with you on the truck needing 4wd.
But RWD cars are a-ok for winter if you just put winter tires on them and learn to drive them. I drove a significantly lightened (and very low) E36M3 with no weight in the back through all kinds of snow and ice and never had trouble. Stock limited slip with a ton of miles, blizzaks, and a little finesse. NBD.

But Mustangs and Challengers aren't typically driven by the most skilled of drivers...at least not around here.

Been tinkering on the mule this chilly am. It's about a witches tit degrees.

Verified air and spark. Still no spark. Think the gas is bad in it, and don't enjoy the thought of draining the tank. Looking for reccomendations of fuel treatment.

High torque, performance tires and rear wheel drive always make for a bad experience in the snow. Under those conditions, you want have snow tires you can swap out, sand bags in the trunk, and keep the vehicle in low gear if possible. Kudos to those with a limited slip rear axle.

I learned the hard way driving to work on the highway in the unplowed direction through 6 inches of snow in rear wheel drive and sticking my arm out the window to clear off a small patch of windshield every two minutes. This is so I could see where I was going because the regular wipers couldn't handle it.

 

That is interesting. Even on steep hills? I imagine IN is a lot flatter than here. The only issue is that it would be hard to justify winter tires here since we only get snow a few times each winter. Unless of course you're like @daveeasa and can justify 10 sets of tires.

 

i use stabil for my equipment gas. Does the fuel in the mule smell like varnish? If so, you’re better off draining it. Is the mule carb or efi?

 

I don't attempt untreated hills in the snow in a vehicle with poor traction unless I have forward momentum to keep me going and nobody in my way.

 

Take the fuel line off where it connects to the carb. Spray card cleaner in the carb like your trying to fill it up. Let it sit a day and try to start again.

 

The majority of Indiana is notoriously flat. We do have rivers and their associated valleys. And as you venture further south, the topography becomes markedly less boring.
We don't get a ton of snow this far south.
But if you're going to run a RWD vehicle (performance or otherwise), you need to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Proper snow tires or be prepared to stay the fuck home. Littering the roads with poorly prepared cars is frustrating as hell for those of us who are prepared.

West Lafayette (Purdue) has a big ol' river running right through it. There are a bunch of roads that can get pretty dangerous when it rains. In the winter, you needed a plan and a plan B...sometimes a plan C.

 

Picture this car with stock wheels and blizzaks blasting down the freeway with 4-6” of snow on the ground and more falling.
No I didn’t raise it for winter.
And I didn’t have ABS either.

Will it pop off with a snort of starting fluid?

 

SeaFoam is both a fuel stabilizer and injector/fuel system cleaner. I use it in my less-used small gas engines, mainly the pressure washer and gas generator.

Whether you need to drain depends on the current state of the fuel. As mentioned, if it's been sitting more than 3-4 years, make sure it's not varnish. Tap pop off the fuel line and drain 6-8oz into a glass jar. Let's see the color of it.

Any idea why no spark?

 

Cape Cod is getting pounded with 60+ mph winds and 6-8" of snow. Only seeing 2 inches where I'm located.

Haven't got that far yet. Been running around with momma this AM.

It's got spark. Fuel has only been sitting since mid-november so I don't know why it got bad. Might just simply be too cold.

 

I can't decide if I'm pissed or stoked that everyone east of the Mississippi is getting buried in snow and we've gotten <2" this whole year.

 

Guess it depends upon whether you have local places to ski where you are or not.

RWD cars become FWD cars if you just turn around.

 

I was actually taught to do this in the event that I just can't make it up a slick grade.
I've never done it. I'm more of a, "get a running start and send it," kind of guy.

 

Depends. I like Mount Sunapee because they consistently groom their slopes and have a wicked half pipe. Stay away from Mount Wachusetts, everyone from Southern MA, Connecticut and Rhode Island flock there because its the closest. Gunstock is more family oriented. Loon Mountain and Waterville are good but you want to get to these places early before the hoards flatten whats left of the natural snow. If you really want great places, there's Killington. VT and Sunday River, ME but they're a day trip to get to so you want to leave the day before.

Glad I got this little machine. So far the gas hasn't gone bad. ;-)

RWD van trying to get up the hill - only thing he had going for him was momentum & determination.

He made it - eventually.

So jealous. Home lockdown would be so much better with snow.

 

Got the mule running. Found out that one of the fuel lines had a leak before it got to the engine. Swapped with hoses I had on hand. Put new fuel in it.

Reason I didn't smell it is because my nose stopped up as soon as I hit the outside air this morning. Menthol cleaned me out and then I fount it. Been zipping around the backwoods.



I may have fucked up by trying to go up the hill. High centered half way up and only one way down now in reverse...


Just kidding. I didn't like the thought of going all the way down in reverse so I backed up some put it in 4HI, locked the diff and sent it. Only hit one tree.
