Help me decide: conflicted about swapping out stock steel wheels

    Too many, but not enough....
    So i have a 21 SR5 with the stock steelies on there. I also recently bought a set of TRD OR wheels to swap out when i bump up to 33's at some point soon after i install my suspension.

    I realized after buying the TRD OR's that i needed to get new TPMS sensors since the steel ones are different than the alloys, and being that these trucks are picky about the TPMS, i would just order the oem ones from sparks which would be around $330 bucks for 5 (i want a full size spare as well).

    The thing is, I dont really hate the stock steelies, the only reason i was thinking to swap them out is for the weight savings of around 7lbs per wheel. Is this really worth doing and dropping a grand between the 5 new TRD OR wheels and TPMS sensors? I guess I cant convince myself that the 7lbs of weight savings will be significant enough. What do you guys think?

    The truck is not a daily, I only drive it on the weekends with family and we do go offroading a couple times a month, nothing crazy, but not just dirt roads either. There is a good bit of added weight on the truck, front bumper and winch is about 180lbs together, I have sliders, full underbody steel armor, and maybe about 250lbs of constant weight in the back between the tonneau cover, molle panels, recovery gear, CO2 and Oxygen tank.

    You've added that much armor and other gear and you're worried about 28 lbs of potential weight savings... I'd say you're overthinking this a bit lol. Get the wheels you want that give you the look you're going for, with an offset that suits your tire size and willingness to cut up things if there is any rubbing. My opinion is the TRD OR wheels are a great upgrade from the steelies, and would be worth the added cost of TPMS.

    Fair assessment, and you are right about the weight, but my understanding was that rotating wheel weight has a multiplying benefit versus just dropping 30 lbs from the bed of the truck.

    it does but not noticeably like people make it out to be. Also, as previously mentioned, you're likely going to be packing extra weight on when you bump those tires up to a bigger size. I think it becomes a bigger issue when people add an extra 25 pounds per wheel with big forged wheels in place of the aluminum wheels the trucks are spec'd with.

    Yeah so i did the math and the new tires ill be getting will be a net weight gain of only a few pounds since i have 275/65 BFG KO2 now and ill be going to 275/70 BFG KO2, so using the TRD offroads will still net me about a 3-4 lb wheel weight reduction versus adding 3 or 4 lbs per wheel and keeping the steelies.

    I originally wanted steel wheels because nobody would be trying to steal them. Only problem, didn't like the sr5 grill and kinda wanted the bedside trail boxes. The price was negotiated to the same numbers, so I got the alloy rims. The other thing I like about steel is the durability. Downside is offset. If not for that I would have got a full set of 5 spare steelies because I favor the round holes vs. mags appearance. All now is water under the bridge for me, but if offset isn't an issue, I vote steelies.

    I needed new TPMS sensors because for some reason the original owner of my truck took them out so I just got some off of Amazon and so far they work great with no issues.

    Steelies! Might have to run a spacer so the tire doesnt rub the UCA, but I dont know the answer to that question with your particular tire size.

    badass. I definitely wont need spacers with the 275/70, its only an inch total diameter more than stock size. I figured 33" is a good size for both on road manner and offroad capability, size, fit, price and availability.

    I think for some reason the 2020-2021 are extra picky about the TPMS.

    This makes sense, the tires I want are only a few pounds heavier than the stock size I have now, and even with all the weight added it shouldnt matter since im still under payload and the truck was designed with the steelies.
    I do also like the strength of the steelies and the fact that they would be easy and cheap to replace and I dont have to care if they get scratched or something.
