What? Why in the hell would Toyota not make them to fold flat?

OK I see they fold down making a flat surface that is several inches above the rest of the floor, hence the shelf you can install to make it flat and then have under storage.

Not a deal breaker to me, but for others it might be.

Exactly. It's what I have been bemoaning about since yesterday. It defies why you would buy a 3rd row SUV.

I can possibly accept a turbo I-4. Especially if it matches the kind of power the GM 2.7L I-4 turbo puts out.

It's like Toyota did all that work updating the interior, styling and engine...then went backwards with the SRA, no more auto 4WD, hump down the center, smaller 3rd row that doesn't lay flat, and to top it off they stick the rear window wiper on the bottom instead of tucking it under the rear spoiler like everyone else figured out how to do...

All they should have done was take the current 2022 Sequoia give it the Tundra interior, update the rear taillights, and make it a hybrid.

It's game changing in that it's the only new model that was a step backwards on several items.

I've got a feeling that Toyota is going to try to fill the gap in their minds with the unibody 7-8 passenger Grand Highlander. More family oriented and more on pavement capable but still fits 7-8 normal sized humans comfortably in SUV form, with a tow rating around 5k lbs.
Sequoia redesign aligns more with them getting a North America replacement for the Land Cruiser and building a true successor to the 1st Gen model which was smaller and had SRA, than just improving on what they had in the 2nd Gen. Definitely strange to see all of competition converting to IRS while Toyota is now going back the other way.

When you want to add a pull out Kitchen add an invertor, water storage for camping , I would like to have a flat floor not a small step you see when the third seat is folded down. I would like a large SUV so I have more space to carry my extra camping stuff in a conditioned space. Maybe its overkill but that's what I would like to have.

The lack of a V8 is the main reason why I won't be throwing my hat into the ring. The cramped cargo space behind the 3rd row is the next huge factor. Traveling with 3 kids and a 75 lb dog on a weekend trip has us utilizing every square inch of space we can get...and I strap stuff down on the cargo rack.

Yeah family trips with the doggo’s has me leaning in two different directions here:

1.) Tundra TRD Pro, and as much as it pains me to contemplate: put a hard topper on the bed for cargo and doggo’s to ride in with kennels or nice comfy dog beds to lie on. Negates the cool factor of a roll down rear window, and probably blocks a camera unfortunately. At least the furry dog shit factories would have a place to hang out that doesn’t annoy the hell out of me.

2.) Sequoia TRD Pro, fold the 3rd row down put that shelf thing up to level out the floor created. Then huck luggage and doggo’s in back, put the mini-barbarian’s booster seat in a captain’s chair and spend 8 hours yelling at the damn dogs to lie down… which they won’t do because they’ll be able to get up to us for lovings…. while we try to drive. I can see in my mind’s eye Jack the Rottweiler standing on the center console blocking the rear view mirror with his giant head, staring right at me with sad dog face while I try to drive in heavy traffic.

Maybe the Tundra is the better answer here even though I think it’s not as good a truck as the Sequoia is an SUV.

It seems like the new Sequoia is supposed to fill the gap left by the Land Cruiser and compete with everyone else’s full-size people haulers (Tahoe/Suburban, Yukon, Expedition, etc). I like the standard hybrid powertrain, and the styling is fine (not really a factor), but everything behind the second row makes zero sense to me. Granted, I haven’t seen it in person, and I know the lack of space is due to the hybrid battery, but it just seems like a poor design.

My face when I saw the pic of the 3rd row nearly touching the liftgate with zero cargo space behind it:

The new Sequoia needs two sizes, the one presented yesterday is just fine for a family of 4; just fold the rear seats put the shelf thing up and it is a big roomy station wagon with the ability to haul more people short distances in a pinch. Bigger families will need more space for “stuff” if a long trip is in the cards.

I emailed my dealer last night and asked to switch my deposit from a ‘22 Tundra TRD Pro to a Sequoia TRD Pro. Got the confirmation this afternoon, on the list for one of their first 15 Pro allocations. One of the things I don’t like about the Pro is it seems like there’s only a standard sunroof, Tundra has the panoramic. Doesn’t make sense to me why Toyota chose to have 2 different Sequoia sunroofs. I really hope they have the pano as an option and also the red interior.

I'll be in the market in about 2 years when my wife retires the 1st gen Sequoia. With 2 kids, the third row will almost always be down unless we're hauling nieces/nephews. IF that third row doesn't fold flat with the floor, that's a deal breaker.

Catch cans were a bigger deal on the first gen Ecoboost that only had direct injection. The 2017+ 3.5L Ecoboost, 2018+ 2.7L Ecoboost, and the iForce all have dual injection which washes the valves with fuel. There is little reason the have one on these engines anymore.

Keeping oil vapor out of any intake is not a bad idea, I'm running a catch can on my 5.7L Tundra.

The little step looks like is where the Hybrid battery resides? The third row seats are mounted to this "hybrid Box" I am guessing. We will know all the details soon, just speculating.
    Hybrid Battery.jpg

The second row folds forward, I wish we can delete the third row seats and reveal a very large load floor.

nah - the 4runner will stay - it will still play the prado role in the lineup. I do imagine that it will take a lot from the new sequoia though on design and abilities. I'm hoping more a 4th gen feel/play for the 6th gen

excellent point - I mean even the next gen taco is supposed to be on the same platform as the new tundra. 4runner will be in the same place

As for the I-4 turbo...I really just don't know how I feel about that. I liked the tractor motor - very predictable off-road and overly "bullet proof". now if that was a diesel - I could get behind that. but yeah...dunno about an I-4 turbo...

at times it really is a lot. my uncle and cousin both had troubles as well - they played some late cards but it did pay off with no problems with the kiddos. Glad things worked out for ya finally for sure with the kiddo - the pups help fill up the rest of the back of the sequioa :)

If you Google "How well do Yukons hold their value" the interwebs say 46.5 % after 5 yrs.

Ask the same question for a Sequoia and it comes in at 44%.

If true, that's a new wrinkle to consider. If swapping every 5 years anyways, the Yukon isn't a bad purchase and it offers more of what a 3rd row SUV needs. On top of having tow hooks and a V8.

Problem with that Yukon/Tahoe is they use very cheap plastic everywhere and after one year half of the truck will be squeaking.

Granted the current Sequoia wasn't exactly great level plastic work either, but the new one should be better.
