Well , simple answer. Everything. Longer answer, I’ve always been a Toyota guy. Had a 2018 tundra. Was tired of waiting on Toyota to update it so got a raptor. However, I’ve always loved the trd pro tundra. Had a chance to get a lunar rock, so I want the opportunity to own the last of the current gen pro.

but I miss all the creature comforts. Which I knew I was losing. I missed the planted and secure feel of the raptor, the slightly better gas mileage lol, the looks, the solid feeling doors etc etc. I just love the overall package. Once the market settles, next year or so I’ll jump into a 2022, unless the third gen pro blows me away.

We tow a camper and take long road trips often, so I wanted the no nonsense feeling of owning a tundra. I just knew long term my raptor would give me some kind of headache eventually.

 

Glad to hear you miss the Raptor! I have been a long-standing Toyota/Lexus guy. Sold my 2021 Tundra TRD Pro for a profit after 10k miles and almost a year ownership. Put a deposit on a Pro last summer. Started researching trucks as I wait, maybe March?? Drove a Gen 3 Raptor and was wowed! So I have a deposit on 2022 35 with 801A. But, no scheduled build date. Since I am first on both allocations, it is just a waiting game…

 

I’m considering doing the same. However just wondering if I should just wait . Considering they are so backed up I’m not sure the benefit of giving a deposit and waiting.
Now I need to decide between the 35/7. Do the 37s impact towing at all?

I hear you. And I think you’re right about the headaches. Fords really start to show their age quickly in my experience. Rattles, peeling paint, little issues. My whole family have driven Fords for as long as I can remember. They have lots of problems (mostly minor, granted). I was sold on the Tundra after my test drive. It was so solid compared to all the other trucks I drove and compared to the Fords in my family. I know the fuel economy is worse. Even for how much I drive (15-18k/yr), the extra fuel costs are worth not having to worry about all the issues the rest of my family deals with. I am approaching 23k miles on my ‘21, and it is as solid as it ever was. No rattles, no noises. I know all the numbers are worse on paper. Don’t care. At all. The idea that I can go anywhere remote and get home every time and get to 300k, 400k, 500k miles with minimal headaches is very appealing to me. I also don’t want to swap trucks every year or every other year. I want this to be dad’s old green truck that my kids have very fond memories of, from hunting and fishing to off-roading and remote camping in eastern TN and western CO and wherever else we may go. I do think the Raptors are cool. Just would never choose to depend on one, especially long term. Typical response on a Toyota forum, right?

As crazy as it sounds I consider buying it an investment.

 

Put in an order while you drive the Tundra. You can’t lose anything. If you want fast and 9K discount the TRX has much more juice than the Raptor. You can get that in 2-3 months ordering a base or level 1. It will be in the 70-75K range.

 

I still haven’t seen these trx’s for $80k most I see are 95-105. I found a dealer that would order me one with no mark up but knowing I put a lot of miles on my tundra I bought mine with 44k miles and have 64k miles now after 10 months. This is why I’m waiting a bit. The 5.7 is highly reliable. High miles still fetch big bucks. I don’t think you can say the same about the TRX. I also looked at f250s cause I tow as well but tundras are almost like a diesel without the maintenance hassle and def fluid. They don’t tow as well and payload of tundra can’t compare but if you’re towing less than 6k lbs. and also driving with a bunch of miles they still hold up value wise. Similar to a diesel with 80k miles

 

You have to order the TRX from one of these dealers: Granger, Koons or Chapman. 9-10K off MSRP but order only. On the lot they are 15K+ over MSRP.

 

Yep, new orders only (these dealers have posts with all of the info here). I still haven't decided if I'm going to order one or not.

Why, so you can sell it for a loss?

The TRX isn't a limited production vehicle. Ram will crank out as many as they can sell over the next few years. Theres going to be plenty of people with the same idea who will buy one and park it for a decade. So seeing a low mileage TRX come up for sale won't be anything special. Generally speaking its the cars no one really expects to be come collectible, that appreciate in value. Case in point, Mk4 Supras. No one in the 90s expected them to become a desirable collectors car. People saw them as just another Japanese sports car, and drove them. Which is why low mileage mint condition ones command such high prices today.

Buy a TRX with the intention of mothballing it, and you'll likely end up like all those guys who bought the 2008 Challenger SRT and parked them. Those poor saps are now selling them for less than what they paid when adjusted for inflation.

 

That was in reference to the current engine going away and neutering it with a turbo blah blah smaller displacement motor. in that model, with such a few short years of production with the engine combo, it will in itself become a limited run intentional or not.

Some said the same thing about people that were holding onto Wrangler Unlimiteds in 2004-2006....They changed the model and engine in 2007...creating an unintentional limited run of the model. I know because I bought one in 2005 and basically drove it for free when I sold it for more than I bought it for.

If they had been making the current TRX for 10 years and then switched engines (like the tundra) I would agree with you...but if they switch with a small limited run of the current powertrain, they create rarity whether they wanted to or not.

 

The last I saw Koons was offering $7000 off MSRP for the 392's.

 

Oh I'm sure the TRX will retain a lot of its value. But tying up $90k+ in one for 10+ years just to break even or make an insignificant amount of money is silly. You'll likely make more just investing that $90k and letting a conservative ~5% annual return build up.

TJ Unlimiteds have definitely held their value well. A quick check on autotrader shows a few unlimited Rubicons with under 50k miles listed for $30-$35k. The highest one I saw was listed for $40k. The original MSRP of $29k in 2006, adjusted for inflation is $40K today.

That being said, Wranglers in general are a bit of a strange bird. I had a plain jane base model 2011 2d door JK that I bought new for $23.5k and traded 4 years later with 50k miles on it for $19.5k

So yeah, you'll make your money back but its anything but a good get rich quick plan. If you want to just spend $100k on something that you can only stare at, that will more or less just keep up with inflation, buy some gold lol

 

I had a TRX over the summer. It was a pretty cool pick-up truck. It was fully loaded and the technology within the truck was top notch. Once you add some options, the price creeps up quickly...same as the price to fill it up with plus gas each time.

After almost 20 years of Toyota trucks i went to a F250 with the Tremor package. While picking it up at the dealer the sales guy showed me a TRX in delivery prep. Let me hop in. While i absolutely hate the giant screen in lieu of knobs i have to admit that interior is so comfy and the materials truly are a big step up even from my Ford which i think is very nice inside.

 

The Rams have nice interiors, and I like the big screen. They did a good job with the CarPlay integration up top and leaving the bottom for other controls or info. I saw a gray F250 tremor in a parking lot yesterday, and that’s a good looking truck. I haven’t seen the inside of one, but I assume it’s pretty similar to the F150s I’ve seen.

 

It's no different. The Tremor package is black 18" wheels (from the standard grey wheels on XLT's, etc), 35" tires, front limited slip, couple drive modes/downhill control, taller rear suspension block, supposedly 1/2" taller and softer front springs and F350 rear spring pack. Oh and running boards and a sticker.

 

Speaking of stickers…there isn’t much worse than the Power Wagon stickers on what would otherwise be a gorgeous truck.

 

Agree. Looked at those as well but couldn't find one to drive. You can order it without the sticker. They absolutely need 35's to look right.

 

Beretta how are you liking the tremor? Did you go with the diesel?

 

He had to replace his transmission for $12k covered by the warranty already... TRX is going to be expensive to own once the warranty runs out.
The TRX sounds amazing and I bet it feels great to drive.

I'm waiting for the 4 motor Cybertruck I pre-ordered though, for a much, much faster vehicle with a 6'.5" bed. 0-60Mph in ~ 2seconds. 3500lb payload, 20klb towing.
Toyota probably has another 5 years before the BEV Tundra releases.
I'll trade my 2.5gen in for a Sequoia.
