Does the 4wd light blink or not go on at all? If it blinks, sometimes you need to move a few feet forward or reverse for it to go solid to indicate you're in 4wd.

And you've tried going back and forth in drive at least 5-10 feet? Normally, it should engage without doing it, but sometimes after you haven't exercised it enough it needs a little help I've noticed.

Next step might be checking out each actuator by opening them up and cleaning the crud that builds up on the contacts inside. Several members have had success with this here and other forums.

There's two of them (transfer case and front diff) with the primary suspect being the one on the transfer case.

Now with you noticing that you hear it trying, I'm not definite if that points to a particular one. Hopefully, someone will chime in and let you know.

I checked the small drive shaft and that locks in but it does not go in to 4wd

Well if that turns, I'm guessing it would be the actuator on the front differential. There might be a thread on the forum here showing how to get access to it and service it.

Some people have had success after lightly tapping the actuator. It might be frozen and need some persuasion.

Yup... Grab yo-self a 1"X 1" stick about 20 inches long, and a hammer and crawl under the front end and give the differential actuator a couple of taps. It might just be stuck.

Or you need to swap it out with a younger one...

I had an issue where it would not drive the front wheels, but would engage 4low. That turned out to be that the fork on the front differential wasn't seated in the collar. 10 minute fix.

Later had an issue where 4high wouldn't engage. Repeated cycling the button solved that. I believe it is corrosion on the actuators internal motor encoder. There is a great YouTube video on this.
