2022: Avoiding Tundra Theft?

Crime is rising, especially in major US cities. I have a 2018, SR5. No push start.

In my complex I know of two newer trucks being stolen, both were keyless entry and push start. Which mine is not. How safe are tundras from theft?! I would speculate they are not the usually targets. Because of the lack of newer technology

PS. My cats were stolen last month and I put a guard plate underneath. I also live in a nice area, behind a gated entry lol.

 

So your cats were stolen even though you had a guard plate to protect them? I ask because this is something I have been considering for my truck.

 

Unfortunately no vehicle is safe from theft and if they want it they will get it regardless. You can slow them down at least by using various “car theft devices” but I have seen many of them circumvented within seconds by professionals. For instance I seen an entire alarm system (main box and all) ripped out of the vehicle and left right where the car was parked…. And there are a few tow truck companies A.K.A land pirates that are in on it. NOT all are but…

Crime is out of control…. It’s a damn shame because working people, such as yourself OP, are suffering whereas criminals are being rewarded. Society is ass backwards these days because the criminals have become the victims while victims become less than S&!T…

Push start isn’t anything new. I had push start in my infiniti back in 08, and it wasn’t a new feature back then. Push start doesn’t make it any more able to steal than any other vehicle. The people who have their vehicle stolen with a push start vehicle, are the ones who get out and leave it running. No different than getting out and leaving the key in the ignition. In any case, modern systems can detect if the key is too far away from the vehicle and it shut down the vehicle anyway if it were stolen

 

Push start vehicles can be stolen if you leave your key close enough to the front door of your house for thieves to duplicate the signal.

 

If people aren't jacking cars, in these cases it doesn't matter what make/model, but most vehicles I see getting successfully stolen are those made before all the high-speed gps tech (SUV's from 2010's common). The new ones with monitored gps are recovered very quickly typically.

And I can't say this enough, please don't volunteer your vehicle by leaving the keys inside. I understand that it's still wrong to take it, but why make it easy.

I'm not saying don't warm your car up (I do that at my house). Just don't run into the gas station in the city. It's all about risk/reward - for good guys and bad guys. Think tundras are pretty safe though compared to other models/company.

 

I've never owned a push start vehicle, but once it's running (as @Danman34 indicated) many will continue to run until being shut off.

 

I had a very special T100 stolen in 2019 in Renton, Washington. One of the nicer examples left in existence. The tweakers also got the almost-new 700 Yamaha grizzly atv chained down in the bed.

Recommendations after that experience:
a.) Completely avoid sh tholes like the Seattle area at all costs. b.) Never enter a major city without a fob-controlled fuel pump relay installed. The truck won't run without hitting that button.

Thankful to live a remote, safe place where the scum-of-the-Earth don't dwell amongst us. I don't know how some of you guys can do it; life is too damn short.

Ah, ok. Do you have a link to where you bought it from? I've looked at the Valhalla's Shields products.

 

I'd recommend the Valhalla shields with security bolts.

 

So, six or eight bolts to remove or are those one way screws?

Thanks, looks like it. Pretty thin at only 3/32" thick.

It's a $100 less than the Valhalla's 3/16" aluminum front cat plate but I think I'd probably spend the extra for material that is 2x thicker.

 

I considered that, but cutting/stealing either thickness is the same difficulty , time, and noise. Granted, thicker is better if all is equal , but I didn’t want to wait either to get mine. I would completely shocked if mine get stolen again.

If the club and a tow truck are possibilities, I don't see why you wouldn't go full stealth mode and tape 10mm sockets on all four body corners. No way anyone would be able to find your tundra to steal it at that point.

Simple answer.
Don't buy modern push button start vehicles.
Otherwise, you have to go through this inconvenience of using faraday bags etc. to protect yourself, and your property.

Much of this tech (keyless-pushbutton, gps tracking, remote disable, self-driving) is unnecessary or not especially beneficial to the owner of a vehicle, so why do we have them with no choice to opt out?
