I have a non-TRD limited 4x4 and where the front skid plate would be (on a TRD) is this blue material that reminds me of a U-Haul blanket. Does anyone else have this and can you post a picture? Almost looks like it's missing a plastic cover or something.

Looks like sound proofing, can you post a pic of yours?

I got it all over under our 22 Highlander. I am pretty sure nuclear is correct that it is sound deadening material.

Thanks for the replies. Here are some pictures. So this is normal, not missing a panel or plastic cover?IMG_1845.jpgIMG_1846.jpgIMG_1847.jpg

It does look like sound deadening material. But that usually is found under the hood and along the firewall, not under the engine! I dont have delivery of mine yet, but I too would question that if I saw it.

That seems like a terrible application for a material like that! That is not skid / splash plate material, at least not for longevity.

The one in that video is a TRD though so it has the skid plate. Maybe that's why?

Could anyone else with a non-TRD post a similar photo to mine so we can compare?

I would consider sending those pics to your local Dealer and inquire if normal.

No way that fire blanket is supposed to be there! Send pics to service manager and say WTF?
That will disintegrate in a short time. Are they providing nesting materials for rodents!?! Guess food from soy-based covering for wires and now nesting!
Look at the corners sagging already. What do you think will happen when it gets wet? Should be metal plate or maybe plastic on non TRD at the least.

    Pretty things
My wife's cherokee has a similar material as a splash guard.

It's to catch and soak up all of the oil that spills when the plastic oil cooler lets go!

That's my fear. Just spoke to my sales rep and he said there's no way of knowing, it could be a trim thing. He's going to show the photos to service. I thought it looked odd and he agreed..

The skid plate that comes with the trd is the small black plastic one. The “trd skid plate” is a additional feature that is the grey aluminum piece. Not standard.

I just heard back. Service agrees that it does not look right and they're going to look next week when installing the bed cover. Adam above mentioned that the video says its fabric--does not show it though. Still curious if anyone else has this?

This seems odd to me, too. I'd try to fit one of the plates from the other trims... not that big ALU monster but perhaps smaller plastic one. Or even DIY one out of a piece of ABS... cut it to size with shears, drill holes for the bolts, and shape with a heat gun. Although after my Tacoma, that has a metal skid plate that does not cover access to anything needed for an oil change, any such cover is still going to be a bit of a PITA. IOW, too bad that filter is behind a cover. I really like the Tacoma's that is under the hood. So easy to service.

I'm going down the rabbit hole now... I cannot find any parts diagrams for the 22, nor any YouTube videos that show this area. Insanity!

When I change the oil for my in-laws Lexus, the blanket material is glued to a black plastic cover. This is odd and very upsetting to me that they went this route for sound

I found this. Is that No. 1 engine cover that splash guard linked above? It looks different to me:[IMG]

I bet it's something they forgot to remove before delivery. Like the big white wraps on hoods from the factory, this fabric is protecting something and was supposed to be removed.

    My guess.

Could that be for shipping purposes only? Seems strange that a material like that would stay underneath the truck to soak up all water, road debris, etc.....

Those of us on the F150 forums fondly refer to this as the "wet diaper". Although the one on the F150 looks more rigid than that and is more of a formed fiber composite.

Usually the ones on the F150 get self removed if you drive through too much snow and a lot of people just throw them away.
