I found this on another forum, but haven't seen it here, so here goes.

Fairly easy mod to make the rear seat backs fold down on a DC. Provides access for storage, audio equipment, contraband, etc.

First remove the under seat storage box if you have it. Four thumb screws, two on each side.
    Thumb Screws.jpg

Next remove the bolts that hold the seat in. On the floor and the back wall. I forgot what size already.
    Bolt1.jpg
    Bolt 2.jpg

Then lift the seats up and forward, the back will fold down. Then you can access the clips that need to be cut. You need a T30 Torx to remove them. The screws are kind of a bitch to get to because of that small metal bar in front of them. I took this after I cut them, but you get the idea.
    Location.jpg

Cut about an inch off and round the ends of each clip. I first cut about 7/8 and it wasn't quite enough. I used a grinder, but whatever you have that cuts metal will work.

    Cut.jpg

Have a beer, because you're done with power tools.

Re-install the clips, seat and storage box. When you raise the seat bottom to fold it up the seat back will lift slightly when the bottom is about half way up, allowing you to fold the back down. Raise the seat bottom again to put it back in place. If you just want the seat bottom up, leave the back in place and the bottom will lock in the up position just as it came from the factory.

That was my first question at the dealer - how does the rear seat fold down? Glad to see there is a way to do it if I want.

Awesome... I am wanting to get more storage behind the seat too... flat tools etc.

Did it this morning, and it works... Evidently the rear seats hang off those brackets and then bolt to the back of the cab and the floor... I did just enough to get them to release... Pain in the ass but worth it...

If you do this, buy a torx bit set and use a cordless drill to remove the brackets.

@JMB great job renewing the write up. I'm sure I've posted the link to this at least 6 times over the last 2 years! It's about the best mod we can do with our double cabs, and FREE!

I've been thinking about doing this to mine. How much room is there? Looks like maybe 3 or 4 inches.

Yeah about that much. But if you shove something in there too big the seat won't fold up. But it's definitely a must do mod.

Cool, so does the seat cushion hold the bottom in? Or does the backrest hinge on the same hinges as the cushion?

Come on Joon, what keeps the backrest from pulling out when you fold it forward? I'll have to look at mine, I'm sure it's pretty obvious. But I'm not going outside right now. We've got a stinky ass skunk out there! Damn that shit is ripe.

Wait, first the 2nd gens and 3rd gens are the same, right?
    IMG_3800.jpg
These things hook onto some hooks on the back wall. When you lift the seat bottom up, the seat back lifts up about half an inch. You have to cut these just enough for them to unhook and lift over the hooks. Then the seat back will fold down.

I don't know if they changed it in the DC. I know they completely changed it in the CM. I get how the top attaches, it's the bottom of the backrest I'm wondering about. Most sedans the backrest hangs in a similar way and is held solid with bolts into the body with a couple bolts. But in our trucks it moves when you fold the seat cushion up. So it must attach to the hinge assembly.

By far the best mod I did. Was looking for a place to put my 2 Amps and thought about just leaving them under the rear seats but decided to place them behind the rear seats. It's much easier to access them in the event something happens.

Hook on the back firewall, the cut clip on back of seat..looking down the well..is about 6.75 inch wide and items can come up about 13 inches before they interfere with the back rest, cut clip against uncut clip

I just cut right at the end of first circle then used the tip that was cut to trace the angle..if Toyota made the clip one inch shorter again a lot of folks would be happy

There's a guy that was making these clips pre cut and powder coated. Selling em for $50/set, I think.
He was looking for a minimum of 10 people to commit, I believe.
There's probably a little money in this for someone with ambition.

I used this.. Took about five mins to do all the cuts.. Taking the seats out was a bit harder much easier with air tools
When slow with the cutter and had barely any sparks..
