2022 Tundra vs 2022 F-150 opinion?

Nice! 402A Tremor. That is gunna be a sweet truck. It's really cool that they have factory 3.73's in it, should make running 35's effortless. I have 3.73's in my 2014 with the old 6 speed and am on 315/70R17 Raptor takeoffs and you wouldnt even notice. It still moves when I ask it too.

 

I’m VERY excited. I’m getting it 3% under invoice too. My Tacoma has been amazing the last 7 years but I have a kid and two boats now so it’s getting small.

My buddy just traded in his 2021 raptor due to phaser issues, ended up having to get an entire new engine due to complications, and ford kept it for multiple months before deciding to do so. He owns a rav 4 hybrid now haha.

He was going to give me a killer deal on it with the new engine but I just didnt want to deal with their issues for a few years of fun, I wanted a truck I can drive for a couple of decades. Still a tough decision.

 

If all this is true I may have to take another look at the Fords when I get serious. I almost went that way about 3 years ago but after lurking on the F150 forum for awhile and seeing all those 3.5 timing chain and cam phaser issues I bailed. Many of those stories were nightmares that would make the current Tundra cab off thing seem minor. I would still prefer a Tundra... or maybe a new Tacoma if the next update is really good... but I doubt I'd ever be able to find one configured how I want, especially since I want a 6.5 bed. Toyota seems to keep pushing the CrewMax/short bed theme so that looking for a truck becomes a unicorn hunt... or maybe this spring we can call it an easter egg hunt? The Fords are much more widely available in different configurations and of course, can be factory ordered to spec. But then they are still Fords. <sigh>

For me, both the new Ford F150 and Tundra with all their Tech and complex systems, are warranty purchases now. Meaning, you do not own them out of warranty, you trade them in before warranties expire. Can anyone here say they will own a new F150 or Tundra out of warranty?

This places more weight than ever on the dealer servicing. Your dealer may provide excellent service appointment scheduling, has WIFI, Satellite TV Coffee and Donuts in the waiting room. But if today, you call your service department and speak to the person in his/her first name...this is not good....

I rate my local Toyota Service Dept. high. 9/10 for the last 3 years. Can any Ford owners here say the same thing of their Service Dept ?

I can’t speak for others, but aside from Toyota reliability, the local dealers are why I purchased my Tundra. Both of the local Ford dealers are terrible.

 

My 2009 Tacoma has only even been to the dealer or other mechanic for the gas pedal recall and frame treatment... and once to a guy to weld up a rusted exhaust pipe flange. I have done all the routine maintenance to include brakes, spark plugs, oil and trans fluid changes, etc. and other misc stuff like installing new headlights, replacing rusted trans cooling lines, installing new stereo head unit and remote start, etc. I'd like to hope the new Tundra would be similarly reliable to allow me to continue that process... except not planning to replace any of the infotainment. But obviously stuff like pulling a cab would be above and beyond, so one might be compelled to consider a long term warranty or early trade strategy. Or takes your chances. I don't see myself doing much major mechanical work on something like the new Tundra.... or F150. In any case my Tacoma has been so reliable I am out of practice.

 

Last thing I want is a relationship with the service advisor at the dealership. This is not my dentist. My teeth I need forever; the truck is a tool and will be kept for X years and traded in. Other than recalls for my truck, it has been in for oil changes tire rotations which means someone different serviced my truck each and every time. An apprentice. he might have only been there one month for all I know. I expect Service Dealer consistency across the areas I travel wherever I might need service.

 

I hear you. I am not a mechanic, but I am mechanical have fixed stuff. Small engines, replaced cylinders. Do my own oil changes. But if it is under warranty it is dealer serviced. Anything happens that needs warranty work, I want a clear trail to the past service work. I used to think as soon as the warranty is over, ok now I will start doing the fluids and other stuff. That would be the case with my 2018 truck when warranty expires. But with these 2022's those days are gone. JMO.

 

For sure, any warranty work it would be straight to the dealer. But not for fluids and other routine stuff. Even under warranty I do my own and keep records and receipts. Once the warranty expires I just stop worrying about the receipts.

Those days are gone with the new vehicles and due to Tech alone. There is a large I Phone like computer controlling everything now. Toyota does not own alot of the software running on it. Has anyone ever tried to do an update to an Windows 7 operating system in the last year ? Not supported anymore.
The amount of change coming in the next 5-10 years ....well no one knows how much .. but i think everyone agrees it will be a lot, considering the pressure gov'ts are putting on companies. For this reason alone, the new vehicles are warranty plays now...JMO.

 

Our favorite Toyota dealership, the only one around us who didn't treat us like crap, just got bought out buy a conglomerate.
Our favorite salesman still works there, and he told me I probably won't like the dealership now.
He's still my favorite salesman, but his hands are tied.
And when we had my wife's car serviced there after the ownership change, they do suck now.

I went in for an oil change and check for TSB on the infotainment. Service advisor kept calling it a TSP because he doesn't know a damn thing....

 

This is a big reason I'm only really looking at Toyota too. All other things being equal, the dealership is just superior. 1 of the local Ford dealers outright lied to me and cost me $650. The other one would make excuses for the truck breaking down all the time, do poor quality work and then tried to charge double the book time for warranty work. The local GM dealer's service dept is good but their sales dept is inept. When I was looking to buy a GM, they were $10K higher than anywhere else and wouldn't budge on price. I bought elsewhere.

Meanwhile, the Toyota dealer treats me very well. The salesmen are professional, there's no bullshit games when you buy, the parts desk and service techs know their shit, and it's always been a good experience.

More importantly they also treat The Woman well when she goes in without me for things like oil changes or to pick up parts for me. That's a big test in my books. Treat my Woman with respect and your business will earn alot of points. That's one of the many places Kentwood Ford in Edmonton, AB failed and one of the many reasons there will never be a Ford in my family again.

What scenarios would the side opening tailgate be more useful or preferable to the dropdown?

I find it difficult locally to find any 6.5 beds on the lot for any brand, even before the supply issues, not just Toyota. It's just the market.

when you need to load heavy things into the bed by hand or just to reach in to the load floor. Having no tailgate puts you closer to the bed. A swing open achieves this, but you still have a tailgate. Dodge already has this feature, the Ridgline will do a full length swing open as well. Suburbans and Tahoes used to have a double door option instead of a lift gate.

 

There are still a few new 2021 Tundras, and I would say yes, absolutely. I’m doing all my own maintenance and keeping a log on my Toyota account. I haven’t been back to the dealer for anything. Hoping to keep it that way for 10 years. Yes, I pay more in fuel. It’s worth it to me to manage my time how I want.

For 2022 Tundras, that remains to be seen. The waste gate issue is a real issue. The steering rack issue that has grounded a bunch of ‘21s is a real issue. But this doesn’t mean that Toyota’s entire manufacturing philosophy—which is what puts them at the very top for long-term reliability—has gone out the window. I still lean toward the idea that you are much safer with the new Tundra out of warranty than an F150. But it remains to be seen. It’s a horrible time to debut a new truck. It’s an even horribler (lol) time to have any issues at all.

Remember, almost 1 in 5 Ford trucks have drivetrain issues during the first buyer’s ownership. This is based on a sample size of 78k trucks. For those of you who aren’t statistically inclined, a 78k sample size gives a 99% confidence level with a 0.46% margin of error for a population of 100 million. (TL;DR: it’s a very, very, very valid sample size.) Yes, people keep buying Fords. This does not mean they do so for strictly rational reasons. Never base your decision of which very expensive depreciating asset to buy on what large groups of other people do. Ford’s manufacturing philosophy which to me amounts to “send it to the dealers, we’ll fix it later” is not something I’m interested in dealing with, no matter how many other people buy their trucks. Has that also all of a sudden become Toyota’s manufacturing philosophy? I don’t think that’s true at all.

 

Around here we normally... in normal times... have no problem finding the longer beds at big dealers for GM and Ford. They stock a broad mix. Just pick your color and option package and you would have several to choose from in any bed length. And, of course, you can always order. Toyota is the outlier. Their distro system just sends short beds... and then people say that's what sells. But that's all they send so this is a circular argument. In normal times you could still find pretty close to what you want by looking regionally during the parts of the year when there was decent supply before they stopped production to swap over to the next year. Now, in abnormal times, it is almost impossible, especially for new high demand models like Tundra.

 

Yeah, I could see it being useful if you were loading something like bags of concrete. Then you wouldn't need to move them back in the bed after loading them on the tailgate. Not sure I'd personally pay extra for the functionality though.

 

The 2022 is the first year that a 6.5ft bed is available with a crewmax cab, so I’m not sure that “how it has always happened” applies anymore. I think the 6.5ft crewmax is going to be a big seller for Toyota. People have wanted that combo for a loooooong time.

 

Well, my experience is mostly with Tacomas. Seems it will be the same for Tundras. Has been so far at least. The 6.5' bed should be a big seller. And it would be if they sent us some. But so far the local dealers seem to be getting 10 to 1 short beds.

 

Some people have wanted that combo. With a manual. Problem is they don’t show up to buy in numbers. It’s like 45 people nationwide. Doesn’t make financial sense for Toyota or any other manufacturer to build them. Like regular cabs. No one makes them anymore because no one bought them anymore.

 

We lived in a village outside a town for 30 years. That town has all the vehicle brands and when we moved there they were all independent.
Since the last say 5 years.... Subaru, (GM - Chevrolet Buick GMC), (Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram), and Toyota.....all these dealerships are owned by the same company now.
