Did a little road trip hauling research pulling a pretty light weight boat last few days.

Boat and gear was around 1500#s and we had the bed loaded down with another 500#s or so of gear.

I am defiantly going to have to do the re-gear for towing anything heavier running these 37's.

Gas mileage suffered more than I would like and top end pull was just not there like it should be.

Was not horribly bad but pulling anything heavier is going to be tough going without the gear change.

Running around town or down the highway is fine with out them but if your going to work / pull with it then the gears are a must.

There was a lot of discussion of having to re-gear on the big tires, its all true.

    Just my 2 cents.

I saw a definite power loss going to 35s. MPG is whatever.

37s with 4.88s will get you slightly better than 4.30 and 32" tires. I will definitely regear when I do 37s. It will be nice to get back to stock range

I'm getting my 4.88s and limited slip done in two weeks. I'll let you know how it pulls after with my 37"s.

Its not a necessity. Just depends on if you are willing to deal with the small loss or not

Yea I am now wondering if this might help running 35's too.

My truck came with 35's but I never pulled anything with it but I could tell at highway speed not pulling anything the difference between the 35's and 37's.

As mentioned you can run without the 4:88's but its going to be WAY BETTER with them.

I'm not towing but carrying a load intermittently and have recently noticed what feels like gears sticking with 35s, only 10,000 miles, and an empty bed.

would you be able to notice gears sticking or slipping with 35's?

I don't really care about a little power loss, nor MPGs. I just don't want to do damage when i'm loaded down, nor when i'm not

I'm not sure what you mean by sticking or slipping. Mine shifts normally, it just felt like I lost a little power when I switched to 35s

Your in a completely bad situation if you are getting "sticking or slipping gears". I don't think that the "gears" that we are talking about changing that are taking power from the drive shafts and sending it out sideways through the axels to the wheels through the differentials are what your having an issue with.

There is no way that they could 'slip' or 'stick' unless the gears are somehow damaged.

Your transmission might be down shifting more often at higher speeds when climbing a hill running bigger tires but I doubt seriously that you have a gear issue.

Its is sounding to me that even 35" tires could use 4:88 gears. I learned that the newer Tundra's come with 4:30's probably to take bigger tires and turn better at highway speeds with a load.

My truck came with 4:30's as apart of the tow package.
No tow package comes with 4:10 gears.

Slipping or sticking GEARS comes with loud bangs, grinding noises, truck feeling like its getting kicked in the balls and jumping and ALL KINDS of other weird "oh shit" somethings really fucked up and its going to be expensive feelings AND the truck probably won't roll forward or backward for long.

    It's not that
It's like they are holding longer when not in tow/haul mode than expected, but normally when going uphill. I live in the high rockies so no avoiding hills here. It could be an anomaly and i only noticed it yesterday. I'll keep an eye out. Probably just my brain playing tricks

If you went up to 35's the transmission is waiting "holding" longer to shift.

You'll have to take it to the dealership to get the trans fluid. Our trucks don't have a dipstick.

Pretty much every Tundra 2010+ (with the 5.7") is all standard with the tow package. 35's do rob a little bit of the low end torque, but unless you are hauling and pulling heavy loads it won't affect performance. In my case, it helped me not spin the tires off the line as bad. :burnrubber:

We use the Nitro gears here and typically either do the Auburn Limited Slip or an ARB air locker.

I don't mean to jack the thread, but it is somewhat gear related. We built this Single cab with a custom 5.5" bed. Supercharger with AEM water methanol injected.

    Drivetrain

    • Level Ten Valvebody
    • Level Ten Torque Converter
    • 4.88 Gears Front And Rear
