Hey, for what it's worth, I thought I'd share a text thread with my Tundra sales person to the group.
I shared the engineer's video above with him and tried to put a little fear of losing the sale in him.
I'm in SWFL and this is an MSRP dealer.

Sorry but that sales person is feeding you the biggest line of crap to keep the sale. He has no idea what he's talking about. The wastegates are an issue and we don't know how wide spread, there's obviously a fix but there's a pretty long delay on the fix. I'm not concerned with it but if I were you, I wouldn't buy from that person just on the fact that he made stuff up to keep a sale.

On a side note, a few higher end trims, a 1794 and platinum have same issue. There for a while it was pretty much those with analog gauges. Now some screenshots of the digital cluster are surfacing.

I'd love to know where he pulled 0.1% out of his ass. Going extremely high but you're telling me if 50,000 Tundra's have been produced only 50 will have the wastegate issue? Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

That was entertaining…any knucklehead would’ve had the common sense to check the forums before engaging in a blind denial.

The service manager at Findlay is telling me of a production date range of late Nov/early Dec from which all the vehicles have surfaced with this issue, which was him sharing what TX facility discussed with him. Difficult to even guess at quantifying that without knowing daily output, number of batches production was pulling from during that time, percentage of bad units from within that defective batch, etc. Still boils down to one issue; Toyotas dismal failure at managing the matter in a way that would result in greater confidence from the consumer perspective

This obviously depends on what they define as "reduced power". I don't see how that is not a safety issue. I don't care about limp mode so there is no further damage to the truck or engine, I care about damage to the occupants inside the truck at that point. Try merging into traffic on reduced power. We all drive with the assumption of expected and predictable power.

I'm going to pay the dealership to pull the cab off my brand new truck with 350 miles on it and get them to "tune" my turbos......yeehaw!

So dealerships are modifying turbos for performance now......yeah....about that.

I wouldn't put a lot of stock into what that guy is trying to tell you.

Even better...Toyota pays them a reduced rate for warranty work, not the customer at full labor rate. You can be sure they take their time and put it back together just like at the factory!

There’s a picture on FB of a guy driving at 69 mph with the reduced power message up.

That's good to hear. Hopefully it didn't take 30 minutes to get to that speed. That would suck to get the reduced power while towing.

Just generally curious for comments from the ACE techs out there. Are folks rightfully concerned that Cab Off maintenance often damages or otherwise leaves the truck less well assembled than when it left the factory or is it not something to really be concerned about?

Yeah going in to reduced power on a highway can be scary. Around here in Chicago if you’re doing less than 70mph you’re getting passed by semi’s like you’re standing still.

My family some experience with lemon law at least in Texas many years back. Brother bough a new '01 F-250 4WD that had issues with the transfer case and front drive shaft. One or both was completely replaced once after about 6 months and then it went back in about 9 months for same issue and same major work for replacement. Brother started talking about lemon law and the dealer had him in another new truck that day same. This is way before social media, but he was impressed and no doubt told a few buddies. I bet he helped them sell a few more trucks. I seemed to remember the fact that the problem had re-occurred seemingly could not be fixed was something he made a big deal about. Basically, this might give indication of defective manufacture or design and that was an important factor.
I think the lemon laws vary by state so this may not be true elsewhere or even in TX today.

Just playing devils advocate here: What if it does turn out that it is something like 0.1% and Toyota is already working with a handful of customers on a relatively infinitesimal issue?

If I was their PR department I would be doing the same thing, basically ignoring the internet rumor mill as engaging with us might give undue credence and damage the brand.

Lack of Tow Hooks though. I think we deserve an #@$ answer and right @#!@$ now!

I read an article that said the Alabama plant was pushing them out at rate of 18k per month. Assuming 2-3 months of engine production before discovery you're talking 36-54k built possibly so only 36-54 issues? It would hold true if we knew their batch sizing I guess. But I would assume parts are ordered in batches larger than that though.

I keep replaying your text string and it's so cringe that how when you mention cold feet he just starts pouring shit out. Please ask him, like really, is there a tundra there because someone fucked up a tune? Pics or it didn't happen.

can you say potential ticking time bomb?

man I sure hope that doesn't turn out to be the case but if it does, that could be really bad.

Im going to wait for a while and let all this blow over before I even consider looking at one.

I'm not saying the sky is falling or that it's like 50%. I just don't see with how in the dark Toyota is about it that someone can make a video about 0.1% and it's spreading like fire. It's like the salesmen with the 30mpg hybrid that will be 4k more. He might be close about the increase in cost but 30 mpg will be tough. But if they hit 30 mpg they can use that world beater tag.

Yup, hard to believe. I know there will be folks trying to crack the ECM and tune their Tundras... eventually. Probably upping the boost a bit or whatever. But I doubt that is possible yet. And that, of course, will kill the warranty. Some mfgs have like Chevy on the Corvettes can detect if the thing has ever been tuned, even if it has been returned to stock program. I assume Toyota has similar. But people doing this sort of stuff are usually savvy enough to understand this and are in it for keeps, so won't take it back to the dealer claiming a false warranty issue.

And if you're that advanced to crack the tune when there's zero 3rd party support on the market, you sure as hell aren't taking it to the dealer if you fk it up.

Had this discussion with Toyota and actual safety. They were taking the conservative approach that it could lead to injury/death and the obvious consequent outcome. Tort reform ain’t coming to America

They built the engines in an assembly plant in Alabama.
