Midnight: there's a new change ready for you to review.
6 AM: we see you still haven't reviewed that change we emailed you about at midnight.

1 PM: hey, you have a new action due about a month from now.
3 PM: so, are you going to do that action that's due a month from now or what?

 

When the developers I work with give stupidly inflated time estimates to complete a project. I have incoming data files from a vendor, 36 files are being sent daily but I only need 16 of them. I need 16 sql tables created to capture and store the data, biggest file is 60 columns, smallest file is 7 columns, most are 20 columns give or take. They estimated 376 hours to build tables that will store the data. The last developer I worked with would do this in a week by himself, now I have 3 guys. I don't see it being more than 150 hours.

 

Underpromise and over deliver

Either that or your guys were trained to do their estimates by the EPC my former company uses.

800 electrical engineering hours to hook up a temporary injection skid that our chemical vendor is going to provide? Really? 800 hours to do the industrial equivalent of running an extension cord across the road and plugging it in? Why don't you just admit you don't want the work and stop getting your panties in a twist when we get a different EPC to do the occasional job for us?

 

When I write time estimates I always add some buffer, but more like 15%. 20% if I'm out of my comfort zone. These guys are giving triple what I estimate.

They added 80 hours for qa and uat testing, their qa guy doesn't do anything. He holds things in his name for a day or two, doesn't document anything, passes it to me to do user acceptance testing (uat) and I find all the stuff he missed. The hours I spend on UAT don't belong in their estimate.

 

The EPCs get mad when we call them on bullshit like that.

Nobody is going to recommend inpatient counseling or treatment for you unless you are a serious risk to yourself or someone else. The bottom line is that insurance will not pay for inpatient unless someone's life is at imminent risk. As a matter of fact, if you call one of those inpatient places, they will help you find someone to help you on an outpatient basis. I was a counselor in a psychiatric hospital before I went back to school for my engineering degree. Don't be afraid to call. They want nothing more than to help you find the right help for your situation.
