I’ve seen and experienced the same and my commute is roughly the same. The mpg have been disappointing for sure. Of course you get those, what do you expect from a truck, guys. Well, I expected what what was advertised or at least within the range. I have 1800 miles so far and right now I’m sitting at 16.9
I’ve even tried a whole tank in eco mode and it was the same.

Eh. One other explanation I had in mind is how the transmission logic changes over time to maximize mileage (mostly by lugging the engine and shifting early).

By the time you put gas in the tank, some junk in the cab and bed, and a couple passengers, you are still approaching 3 tons in a brick shaped vehicle. This is just not a recipe for good MPG regardless of engine. Just my 0.02.

Not looking for good. Just looking for acceptable. That may vary individually for potential customers.

I get 21 mpg at 60 mph. And 18 at 70mph in temps in the 30’s. Stop and go and any uphill that involves turbos really tanks the mileage. On my old truck I can go pedal to the floor on stop and go and it wouldn’t really affect anything , not the case with this truck. My first tank was 17.6, second was 19.6..those are tank calculations at the pump. Today I will compare the dash mileage to the pump calculation after using only non ethanol to compare.
I have to think people getting below advertised mileage just have a particular drive not conductive to good mileage or they push the peddle down to much. I have been following Toyota’s recommended break in procedure. Idk if its necessary but why not.

That's not all that bad with cold starts/warmups (depending on where you are) and winter blend gas. It should improve a bit after the switchover to summer gas.

That’s not true. The shift points are fixed and don’t change over time. The learning the transmission does is for the wear and tear on the fluid. It adjusts the oil pressure needed for shifting as the oil ages.

One thing this Tundra may have that the Lexus LS and LC 10-speed units have are adaptive control logic which hold lower gears longer based on your driving. If you’re an aggressive driver, the 10-speed will hold lower gears and drop your fuel economy due to higher revs.

That is what the meter is showing. The meter in my 2020 seemed pretty accurate compared to the calculated fuel economy, so I’m just going off of that. I’ll try calculating my next tank and see if a variance exists.

My story is a lot different.

I had a brand new F-150 with a 2.7 Ecoboost. Nice truck but guzzled gas like you wouldn't believe. I was getting 9 to 11 mpg.

Took it to the Ford dealer. They said the 2.7 needs a few thousand miles to break in and they promised mpg would improve.

After about 4000 to 5000 miles the mpg started to climb dramatically. I got 19 to 23mpg average. Fantastic engine but oh my the first few thousand was awful.

That’s what I’m hoping for. My Silverado took about 5k miles before the mileage got up to a constant 20mpg (19 after leveling kit). The next tank I’m going to use ethanol free, just out of curiosity.

Your 2.7 is a lot closer to the new 3.5 in terms of technology. Hopefully the mpg improvement is common across the board.

So much discussion, too little MPG data.

Turd gen people- please keep reporting your MPG after calculating at the pump. Lots of us are curious.

Reset it next time you fill up. You can also change it to show tank average mpg (reset at each refuel) and trip average (reset after each shutdown). I’m curious to see what others are seeing too.

I’m averaging 16.9 right now with about 100 miles until empty. That’s by meter so far. My last tank averaged 16.9 as well. I’ve been trying to drive as economically as possible. My drive to work is mainly rural with some city and idle time, which is approximately 80 miles round trip.

17.8 mpg mixed driving on my last tank. What kind of mixed driving? Who cares it doesn’t mean anything. I can empty a tank and get 14 mpg or I could empty a tank and get 23. Point is I CAN get 23. I think that’s the point of this thread. Do these trucks get the mileage as advertised? Yes. Can you drive in ways that get worse then advertised? Yes.

Drive mine home 90 miles from the dealership and it was 21-22 MPGs the whole way (mostly highway). I’m sure I can keep it close to there or get 8 MPGs on a whole tank by driving the shit out of it.

The point of the thread is to help people understand what kind of mileage it is getting when you use it as a commuter daily driver vehicle, and as the truck was intended; loaded and or towing something. I mean, the later is what Toyota seems to be preaching in the new commercial I saw of the MGM color truck during the football game last night.
    So Please specify.

    1) Daily driving, commuter empty
    2) loaded down - let us know how close to the payload rating
    3) towing - how much weight you are towing.

    The OP text modified.

If one of the three categories is not listed I will assume you are using it as a daily driver, commuter truck and it is empty. I am interested in the mileage for all three categories and appreciate all input. thank you

I'm getting 18-20 mpg per tank with 1k miles driven. 295/60/20 Nitto Recon Grapplers on stock height. Mix of city but mostly highway going 65-70 mph. All in normal mode.

My cousins ecoboost improved a bit after a few thousand miles. If this truck gets better then I’m all ready getting I’m going to be pretty happy. All though I won’t know until next winter. Knowing it will improve into the summer.

So I filled up today with 90 octane ethanol free, so we’ll see if that’s any different. I ran it as low as I could before filling up. This last tank on normal mode I got 16.8 mpg based on truck, math showed 16.77 mpg so it’s a wash.

I have been putting in non e the last two tanks. I burned 10 gallons of it last week and I got 17.8 hand calculated and the truck screen showed 17.2. My Tacoma consistently got about 1.5 mpg better with non-E. I wish there was a way to calibrate these trucks like you can after market fuel gauges.

Funny you say that, in the short 40-60 miles I’ve put on this tank I’m getting 19 mpg. I assume once I get to the end I’ll be getting 17 or so, which isn’t worth the extra cost. Then I’ll use non E once a month or so.

how many miles do have on yours?

1500+ miles, it’s cold here so a bit of warming up in the morning for the kids. I’ve run MPG over a few tanks, partial fills, full fill, etc… to see what it gets on highway and mixed. I’m expecting to constantly see 17+ with my driving going forward, but more micro numbers:

Avg with mixed driving - 17
    Highway - 21-22
Beating only around town - 16

essentially the truck is good on the highway doing about 65-70. Above that the mileage starts to tail off. Around town, it didn’t matter, 16-17 consistently.

Just broke 1000 miles. Your dash isn’t likely going to show an accurate number make sure to hand calculate to compare. I did the math once and it was something like if you get 1.5mpg better with non ethanol then as long as it’s not more then 60 cents a gallon it’s cheaper.

He said 24.5 mpg total. A 91 mile trip is hardly a accurate way to test mileage but it is interesting. I have gotten as good as 22 but have yet to drive at temps above 45.

One test is hardly a good assessment of mileage. I was hoping he’d come back and say that he’d run the test multiple times. I can get in the 20s with some chill driving downhill but currently hovering around the mid 16s. Only in my second tank and I’m at 5k ft and hasn’t been warmer than mid 40ºs.

    You're right. I made a mistake.

I am betting it was an early click off. He should have done two clicks per fill.
