Has anyone had any issues with the fuel level meter on the 3rd gen? I was driving today and when I parked and turned the truck off the indicator was at 3/4 of a tank and estimated range of ~350 miles. When I turned it on later today to leave, the fuel indicator shot up to a full tank, with an estimated range of 445 miles. I haven’t had a chance to go fill it up yet, but I’ll try and get out tomorrow to fill it up to see which level was accurate.

Hello there, I had the same exact issue and I thought I was losing my mind. I figured someone else may have experienced this as well, so I glad to see I am not the only one. Mine occured in the exact same manner as you describe this issue. Let me know if you learn more about this problem, thank you.

I posted on this under a thread I called "First Issue"....The sensor just needs recalibrated. Once a tech pulls your truck into the bay, it shouldn't be more than 30 minutes before you are out the door. It was a simple fix and I have not had an issue since.

Thanks for the info! I’ll swing by the dealer tomorrow and make an appointment. Glad to know it was an easy fix!

Thanks, Jim. My local dealer didn't know how to fix, so they touched base with Toyota HQ and they were able to guide the local tech on correcting this issue.

Did the recalibration work for you as well?

Also curious about how the re calibration went? I filled my tank from half a tank to full today And the gas gauge didn’t move. It stayed around half tank. I drove 40 miles today and it’s still acting as if i didn’t add any fuel. I have restarted the truck 4 times total..

I had the same thing happen to me today. I have a feeling this has to do with the larger fuel tank. ECU may be getting confused, hopefully “learning?”

With my Porsche 911 that has an extended tank, the fuel gauge does not start dropping until at least 1/3 of the fuel is gone, or when fuel reaches to where it would have been full with the standard tank.

I took it to the dealer and they could not replicate the problem. They told me to bring it in the next time the needle “jumps”. I have since put a few full tanks of fuel in and have not had the issue happen again.

I have the same problem and have taken it to Toyota twice already. My gauge moves up when backing out of my sloped driveway and will stay up even after driving more than 40 miles. Dealer dropped the tank and checked the fuel sending unit and it tested good. Could not recreate it but I kept pushing the issue. Tech went to my house and hooked up his laptop and captured the problem. Sending unit was working well but gauge did not move. It has been reported to Toyota and was told there are other reports and they are now investigating and coming up w/ a fix.

I drove 86 miles and filled up again and the gauge went back to the full mark. Two things I’ll note. The spot I fueled up wasn’t perfectly level. And second when I went to fuel up the second time I’m not sure the gas cap was tightened all the way.

I also had a scan gauge 2 plugged in (that does not work on my truck) when the fuel gauge stopped working..

how long does it take. This is the second time it happened to me. Around remaining 350 mile mark the needle shoots up to full.

Shouldn't take more tha a tank or two at best when new when working properly. Sounds like a glitch Yota is working on now.

FYI the Service Manager at the dealership told me that Toyota is aware of the issue but there isn’t a fix at the moment. He told me it was something to do with the fact that the new fuel tank is flatter/shallower than the one on the previous gen., which is impacting the sensor. Mine still happens whenever I park on an incline but filling it up after seems to resolve the issue.

Any fix on this yet? Mine is doing the same. So frustrating. Now I just rely on my odometer. When it reaches 167 miles, that's 10 gallons used.

Same here. I thought the truck was magically producing gas overnight. Hope they come up with a fix soon.

Anyone find a fix for this? Seems like anytime my truck is on a steep incline hood facing up like a boat ramp the fuel will indicate a full tank.

Only had this issue happen twice to me. On the first and second tank. Currently on my 6th tank now and never had it happen again. Always filling to full and park on pretty inclined driveway.

I’ve driven the truck till gas light comes on couple times now and distance to empty in single digits. Most I’ve ever fill up is usually around 26-28 gal. So definitely still can keep going.
Last tank, I had DTE down to 3 miles and only filled 27.799 gal.

Had the same issue consistently described by OP , posted on another thread was a recommendation to disconnect negative battery cable. I tried that last week when the tank showed "full" and it immediately went down to about half tank. So far so good...

All of the same issues with the fuel tank. 4600 miles now and its happened 3 times. Fill up and needle drops to 3/4 after driving and after I park it for about an 1hr or 2 the tank is back to full. Only ever been able to fill up 26-28 gallons from what I thought was completely empty.
