Official 2022 Tundra 3rd Gen Thread

Hyped Up? You mean all the threads well before the 22 was released telling people they would have turbo problems were just made up hype? No experience in there? Then the predicted turbo problems show up day ONE on the new trucks just like a bunch of us said they would. Gee, how did we know? You know how we knew? We owned turbos before most of you were born and they were crap then and they are crap now. They'll always be crap. There's just a new bunch of suckers to sell them to. Every generation has to learn the hard way and the 22 Tundra will be that hard way. The Tundra peaked with the last gen.

Well I guess put me in that line of "all day suckers," @texmin but I'll tell you from personal experience, and I have to vehicles in my garage now each with turbos, and I've had zero mechanical issues.
Engines are smaller now, not because the manufactures wanted to, but because of MPG laws. Turbos serve their added HP purpose. My $0.02.
Hell, before we know it, the ICE won't even be around anymore anyways...we'll all be in EV's.

 

It’s not “turbo issues” it’s a bad batch of waste gate actuators that got installed in a unknown number of trucks. There haven’t been any issues with the turbocharged engine system as far as design go. The fitment issues are real. The trim around windows and door seals and stuff are pretty poor quality and hopefull there’s some tsb’s coming out to address it.
I know I’ll be asking my dealer about some fit and finish issues I have. I’m just waiting to not be the first one. My truck has been flawless besides one time the infotainment screen froze on navigation. Everything worked behind the frozen screen which seemed weird. 900 miles on mine.

 

The Tundras sell over sticker and the dealerships still cannot keep them on the lot, I guess no one is listening to this reasoning, me included.

I own three vehicles with turbos, two are Toyota and one is Subaru. I have also owned several vehicles with turbos in the past, never an issue.

 

Pathetic. What’s the turbo problem, do you know? Has the turbo failed? Or is it just an electronic defect? There is not enough data to support the claim that the Tundras turbo is unreliable.

Turbos have improved greatly since the 80s. Even so there are plenty of reliable turbos. Toyota has turbos in plenty of vehicles across the world. A good example is the Land Cruiser which may see hundreds of thousands of miles in extreme environments where reliability is the number one priority.

Nowadays, the main failure point for turbos is oiling. This can be addressed by proper maintenance.

I’ve owned a handful of vehicles with turbos both (gas Subaru, Audi, Toyota, Nissan and diesel Dodge, Toyota, Mercedes) and never had any turbo issues ever. I’m not worried at all about the defects seen in some Tundras. I’m absolutely certain it’s some manufacturing/assembly issue that will be addressed quickly.

 

Never understood all the hate, towards turbos in a gas engine and the claims of them being unreliable, yet those same people have no problems with turbos in diesel engines.

 

I was going to say pretty much the same thing. Diesels have been turbocharged for at least 30 years and would go for millions of miles before the days of DEF/EGR, etc.

 

This situation I believe is not about people hating turbos. It’s more about the realistic people stating that a total redesign is going to have issues but then you have the diehard fan boys saying there are going to be no problems with this new model. There are lots of fit and finish issues and electrical issues right now as well as the Westgate problem. this is what the fan boys knock the big 3 for. But they find excuses for Toyota.

 

Any first year redesign model will have issues, will be reported, and will be resolved, and most are corrected in the next production year. I am not a fan boy, but I am happy that I have a 22 Tundra rather than being one of those less fortunate people that don't have one and need to complain about them instead.

I fully agree that I'd never buy the first year of a major redesign. But they would have had issues even if they'd put in a 5.0L or 6.2L V8. But then the V8 guys would be making excuses for Toyota.

I have legit grenaded more turbochargers on Diesel engines than gasoline engines, so far my score is 3 destroyed turbo diesels from turbo failure (there have been other carnage events) and 0 turbocharged gasoline engine turbo failures.

I’m also talking about destroying huge turbochargers. The kind that you find on medium speed diesel electric locomotives. When they let go it makes a spectacular mess!

Good lord, enough already. For f cks sake. I'm starting to read these posts and LOL. When I joined here I had no idea of the hatred possible from a prior truck generation to another! Most of us have already owned the Gen I, Gen II and Gen 2.5.

The 2007 had its issues, hell my first tundra --a spankin new 2000 SR5 4WD--blew the trans in the first year! Toyota freaked completely out and got right on it--aired in a new trans to Alaska and I had it back in a week.
Every debut has some issues, and the '22 will have some too. The Lexus LS 500 obviously sports this fabulous engine, and has for some time.
If technology and design stopped with the inline six in the 1968 ford F100 we'd still be right there. I welcome most of the changes and with Toyota they'll be done right, even with enduring a few growing pains.

Well I went and threw in the towel on this 2020 with 6,000 miles. I have enjoyed following this forum when I was really hoping to jump into the 22 hybrid but I will wait it out and see how that unfolds.. thx again for all the conversations and battles I have enjoyed it..

Great thorough video. Believe this is the TRD package, he mentioned lack of covers and transmission lacked a skid plate. However I don’t see a single skid plate anywhere. Did he remove them just to better point it things?

The underlying issue (and yes, I’m one of those wherein the wastegate matter acted as the catalyst for a replacement vehicle) is the manner in which Toyota DIDN’T manage this. If it had been immediately kid-gloved with each of us, none of us would have anything but praise as to how they recognized, addressed and resolved an otherwise isolated manner.
Instead, they took a position somewhere between hubris and head-in-the-sand.
I remain royally pissed-off at Toyota. The dealership elected to retain a customer and took the fall for a matter in which they bore zero responsibility.
