Well, I almost got ripped into a a pile of pieces tonight. Konecrane messed up. The reset was actually on the crane so the tenured guy was showing me where everything was. We had the crane being watched by another tenured guy.

Finished up our job on the crane and was getting off the crane back onto the gantry. I had just clipped my harness onto the gantry rails and then I heard the crane fire up. Tenured guy started freaking out, and cussing people out over the radio.

I unclipped from the gantry rail and back onto the crane just before whoever was running the crane moved the crane down the track. Had I not unclipped the lead would have gotten stuck on one of the support pillars, and ripped me into two legs, two arms and a torso. Not a fun way to go.

When we came down I chewed the operator out for not listening to the guy on the floor. She won't won't look at me now, but others here feel I was justified. They agree that it would have killed me had I not unclipped.

    Crazy.

Should this have been a situation where lockout/tagout was involved?

The only way to trouble shoot what we were dealing with was hot as some of the solid state relays won't test properly with the power off.

There are still OSHA LOTO protocols for working on energized equipment. This is an example of a preventable accident, now you know that the operator station should have been secured or they 2nd person should have been in the operator station to prevent it.

It's worth bringing up with the safety person, be clear you're not trying to assign blame just trying to prevent injury.

Fuck no. When is this shit supposed to hit?

I'm not even sure who the safety person is. I'll have to find out. But yes. Totally preventable.

We had a third maintenance guy on the ground in control of the crane controller. We were in contact with him via radio. Supposedly... when we said we were coming down he thought we said we were off the crane. So he handed off the controller to the operator who promptly wanted to test the crane and almost made a slap chop Noah.

I didn't know this until he fessed up later.

It's usually not a bad idea. I'm sure there's outliers but my interactions with them has always been positive.

They're just like everyone else there to do a job, in the end ours know we don't follow the rules 100% but 1 on 1 they're willing to admit that some of the protocols aren't feasible for every day but they'd like us to do them :bananadance:

You think safety is bad? Try dealing with security.

Anything remotely technical for them to understand and they refuse to sign off on it. Paperwork has to be deferred to a government engineer to give the thumbs up.

That's typically a 6 month turnaround and security wants a white paper to explain what you plan to do in detail.

I bought the Costco one about 10 years ago and love it, use it all the time and it's held up great. It's on the larger side, but I'm ok with that since I use it for the truck and the sequoia. This and the Milwaukee impact are my two favorite tools!

Call me Shifty, cause I'm going in.

I hear you 100%. I would rather be a machinist or fabricator and IMO, welding at a high skill level is necessary for both. My fab guy does a lot of stuff for me that I feel like I should be able to do myself.

I shipped a 60lb box from central IN to somewhere in TX. Took two days. With $1200 in insurance, it cost me ~$100.
    TWO
    DAYS
    (I hate FedEx so hard.)

    [/QUOTE]

I had the exact same experience. I was a couple years behind you. 93-97 We were constantly bombarded with COLLEGE PREP this and COLLEGE PREP that and if you don't GO TO COLLEGE, you're going to live in ABJECT POVERTY. It's amazing how far the money-grab extends. **I went to public school K-12.

I was about twice that when I finally fully retired from attempting college. Took me much longer than I care to admit to get it all paid off. Different paths for everyone.

I also do my best to limit projects in-process. Two or three is about right. Any more is overwhelming. **This is total projects. So house, car, etc are all covered under the same umbrella number of 2-3.

Independent fact-checkers say this statement is missing context.
I'd like to be in on this PM if it goes down.

I told both of my kids going to college to choose a major that teaches them a SKILL. My son chose computers, my daughter is pre-dental and wants to be a periodontist. While I agree the “everyone should go to college” scam is bullshit, there is value in education. I also can’t understand someone willing to spend $50k on a vehicle, but refuses to spend any money to further their education. And yes, college is ridiculously overpriced. I told my kids I would not be paying for their school, so they should choose a path to help pay for it themselves. Scholarships, grants, loans etc. it’s their money. They aren’t wasting mine, they are on the hook. They both got academic scholarships. When my son finishes school, he will have less than $15k in loans. He lives on $25k a year now, even a $70k a year first job will easily pay his student loan off in the first year. My daughter will likely end up owing more money before she’s done (possibly $100k depending on dental school of choice) but her earning potential will be astronomical, so the loans will be a moot point. Whatever path you choose, have a plan and be intentional. Invest in yourself.

Good point. Dave Ramsey posted recently that 88% of millionaires have a 4 year degree compared to only 9% which never graduated college.

Yep. There's a 'meta' component to it too. Like, when you're working on a project, finish the task at hand before digging in. I told Noah this on crackie, I believe. It's easy to be, like, "Man, I've got the rear end off for the new driveshaft, let's notch and airbag the suspension!", "heck, might as well upgrade to a big brake kit too, since I'm back here!", rinse repeat a couple of times and suddenly it's the project that never ends, total bonerkiller, motivation suck.

It definitely is missing context. I can tag you into that conversation if you want, but I think it wrapped up.

Starting something and seeing it through to completion, especially something that long says something in and of itself. And the experience gathered along the way outside of what your intended field is can open your eyes to other possibilities. All that being said, I wish I could work with my hands in a lower stress environment. I don’t mind the work, it’s the corporate expectations that are often unreasonable from a personal time perspective. I enjoy building, fixing, trouble shooting, creating. This ain’t it. But it’s been financially rewarding. Yay.

I used to have our tstat set to 68 during the day and 62 overnight.
I was damn-near voted off the island. So now it's 70 all the time.
