My son drives at a half tank or less. I have seen it on the E many times. Drives me nuts.
I am a fill it up at 1/2 full type of person.

The 2.5 gen from full went a long time before the needle started moving - but once it did - watch out ! lol
The new tank below not so sure about that anymore .

I don't even know if the dealer can do it on the 2nd gen. I just multiply the miles or mph by 1.08 (tires are 8% larger).

I cannot stand empty tanks either. But I just need to know how far I can go before I get the sweats.

I generally fill up in between 1/2 and 1/4, I only took it that far because a few people were curious how many gallons it took on E. Then I became curious and here we are.

The next tank I’m going to try will be ethanol free. My 21 Silverado performed better in every way when I used it. I didn’t use it all the time, since it was always $8-10 more to fill up.

Same here. My 6.2 loves 100% gasoline and rewards me with great mpg.

Ethanol has a higher heat of vaporization than gasoline, nearly double. So while pure gas has slightly more energy than E10(3%), E10 has a higherHOV and has a greater cooling effect which means it should have an effect on timing. I think this is important on the small displacement boosted engine vs the slight energy bump from E0 assuming the octane rating is the same.

On a big NA motor like the 6.2L, I would think it would be the opposite as you are not heating the intake air with two compressors spinning at 150,000 rpm

Exactly why I like to look at everything in my POV. Almost every car I’ve ever had I get 1-3 mpg lower then the epa rating. So in I get around 11 city and 15 highway in my 2014 tundra. So i can make a decent estimation that in the new one id get maybe 15 city and 20 highway. Everyone saying they get 2 mpg over the epa rating on the 5.7 tundra what makes you think you can’t do the same in the new tundra?

I can't comment on the 3rd gen trucks but my 2nd gen (2016) is amazingly accurate on the dash display. I hand calculate my mileage with each fillup and then reset the dash display. At the end of the tank, my last three tanks have been DEAD ON what the dash showed me. It's crazy. Most trucks I've had from other brands were usually a few tenths to as much as 1.5 MPG off. This Toyota is spot on.

Something else odd I noticed is that on stock size 275/65R18 tires, using GPS to verify, my speedo was about 0.5 MPH fast. Now, on 275/70R18 tires it's 0.5 MPH slow. In both cases it's REALLY hard to see any difference on the speedometer. This is at 55 MPH. Have to look really close at the needle to slightly see it. Speedo is still pretty much dead on. I thought that was strange. And the MPG display is still spot on also.

As a side note, going to 275/70 tires obliterated my mileage. I was averaging 15 before the switch which honestly I was very happy with. After the new tires I immediately dropped to 13 and that was painful. If I could do it over again I may have reconsidered.

To me the weird thing is TTV6's don't get much better MPG's at altitude compared to V8's. TFL compares every brand at altitude and there isn't a huge difference in MPG's or performance with TTV6 vs V8.

Yeah but if you think about it really it makes sense. Power is a product of air and fuel. An engine that makes more power is going to need more fuel and more air. At altitude when the air gets thin, that turbo is working hard to stuff as much air as it can into the engine but then the ECU says wait a minute, gotta' keep that stoichiometric ratio balanced so it tells the injectors to increase fuel supply.

Even at low altitude the V6 twin turbo engines will see the same MPGs as a V8 when towing because the turbos stay spooled up all the time and that signals for more fuel.

Yeah, there's a bit of a weight increase per corner. Something like 20 lbs. total per corner. But I've done aftermarket wheels and tires on at least 10-15 trucks and Jeeps in the past and I've never seen a 13% hit right off the bat like this. It's very odd.

First time I filled up our 2022 SR5 Crewmax Tundra after leaving the dealership with 227 miles used 11.3 gallons getting slightly above 20 MPG around town & highway unloaded driving. I am very easy on the throttle in hilly country.

Yep. Bigger tire and probably more important E load so significantly heavier. Same size I run and yes I saw a couple MPG drop too. Sure wish some decent larger than stock tires were available in 18s and C load.

Back to the original question...first week mostly rural driving, no highway, some city stop and go 19.5 mpg (beats my Jeeps usual 15 same circumstances)
Edited to add: warm climate, just me, no cargo. Math at the pump first fill-up (dealer gave me a full tank.) 4x4 SR5

    Hey everyone!

I just traded my 2020 Tundra CrewMax Limited and picked up a 2022 Tundra CrewMax with the 6.5 ft bed. My daily commute involves 40 highway miles, cruising at 70 mph. I don’t know if it is due to the break-in period on the new engine, but in my 2020 I averaged 16 mpg during my daily commute, and on the 2022 I’m only averaging 16.1 mpg. Both Tundras had the larger fuel tank. In the 2020 a full tank had an estimated range of 470 miles, in the 2022 a full tank has an estimated range of 445 miles.

    Good info.

How many miles logged so far?

What is the outside temperature during these drives?

Just hit 600 miles. The temperatures in my area have been around 58F during the day and around 20-30F at night and during the early morning. Hoping that after the “break-in” period I see better fuel economy.

Interesting... and disappointing. On my 2009 Tacoma I found just the opposite for the highway rating. The EPA ratings on the sticker were 16/19. The 16 city is fairly accurate (+ or - 1 MPG) but I routinely get 21 MPG on pure 70 MPH highway drives... even 22 if I take it a bit easier. This is not computer display but refilling the tank and doing the math. It didn't get that when brand new but I don't recall how long it took to improve. Same for my 2016 Corvette. It will push 28 to 30 MPG on pure highway driving... if I can manage to keep my foot out of it. Even a few speed bursts will hurt that a lot. I was hoping that better hwy MPG would be the case with the new Tundras but it seems not to be the case.

It’s that calculated fuel economy or what the fuel economy meter is showing?

I believe you will. Break in, cold starts, and winter gas now are all negatives. Please keep us posted. Seems like a great test case for hwy MPG.

There’s nothing really to ‘break in’ in a modern vehicle. I am pushing 14k miles on my 21 Sequoia and the mileage didn’t change one bit since it had 10 miles on the odometer.

Some of the observed mileage improvement might be purely psychological. At first you are all excited about your new toy and later you start treating it like an appliance and drive more conservatively.

No, the math doesn't lie. I agree you might be driving a little harder now and then early on around town but when you are on the road it is steady state. A highway trip is a highway trip.
