After recently selling my 2011 RCSB 5.7L 4x4, in a moment of epic stupidity, I realized I REALLY miss the 5.7L. I ended up buying a couple of 1st Gen 4Runners, and both had the 22R(E) engines. They're just fine for the little 4Runners but I needed something manlier sounding.
I spotted a local 2007 Tundra 5.7L double cab 2wd. Problem being that "it doesn't run". Well, I took a gamble on my mechanic skills and did a straight across swap for my 1989 4Runner. I was able to get it started last night but it sounds horrible. Definitely more work to get it back on the road. I'll update here as I get it going again. The goal is to use the Tundra to haul my orange 1984 4Runner to the trails.

Very nice. Those 22R motors didn’t put out a lot of HP, but they are the most durable 4 bangers on the planet.

Welp....... I need to remove the passenger side valve cover to inspect the cams and valves. It may need one or both replaced on the passenger side. Nasty loud ticking. I changed the oil and it looked like I STRUCK GOLD!!! This is gonna cost me.

I must be looking in the wrong places. I see motors for $4-5k on eBay and $6,500 from LKQ. I can get a rebuilt head for about $650. Gasket kit probably $200. This baby might earn the name "Money Pit" real quick.

It's important to remember that oil filters have a bypass and that metal has gone everywhere.

I got to work on Sunday by getting the valve cover off. I didn't see anything "bad" like I was expecting. The valve train looks pretty clean in my opinion. I bought a Milwaukee bore scope to look at the pistons, but it doesn't focus close up at all. I was only able to see the tops of the pistons, but couldn't make anything out. I borrowed a buddies bore scope this morning so I hope to get a better view tonight. I had to drain the radiator, which was good because the previous owner evidently liked water mixed with minor amounts of the green stuff....

You know, when some people are going to dump a vehicle they may easily open the cap and delibrately pour a medicine bottle of shavings, sand or whatever into the crankcase just to be a richard. That may be what happened in your case. Just never know with a used vehicle.

With my Tundra's 4.30 rear axle an LS would feel alive... There is a used LS 6.0 with 4L60E local to me complete with computer and harness for $2,500. LS is definitely an option, but it would probably kill any resale value.
