    Hey guys,
What’s the best battery you guys recommend for a 2015 Toyota tundra? The battery that I purchased at the dealer went out in 19 months.

    Looking for something better

Texas heat probably helped. Severe heat and cold takes it toll an a battery.

optima batteries used to be "it". Good batteries but pricey. Interstate are decent and much less $.

I have never purchased from a dealer. I usually just replace with something from my local auto store or Costco/Sams, and get one with a bit more CCA and reserve than stock and one that has 3-4 year replacement warranty.

    These may help

Odyssey batteries hands down. As mentioned optima since they were bought out many years ago have gone down hill.

AGM from O’riellys. They are a decent battery for a decent price.

Odyssey ODX-AGM27F which is the replacement for the NorthStar is a top battery choice.

However if you have a solid AGM option available from a local Costco it will probably be the best bang for your buck.

If memory serves AGM wont fully charge on the Tundra system without a special diode or something, correct?

Unfortunately Enersys is no longer making Northstar. All Odyssey branded now and the ODX line is the equivalent. Specs are identical.

An AGM best charges between 14.4 and 14.8. The OEM system on a 2.5 gen doesn’t normally go that high without. To maintain battery life you can either replace a diode (which I did with the GM diode) or just throw the battery on an AGM charger every few weeks.

Generally the once every few week cycle charge voltage spike over 14.6 you get from a charger will be enough to keep longevity if you use the battery normally. If you are constantly draining the battery with accessories like a winch, fridge, etc, an electrical system upgrade is, in my opinion and experience, worth it.

Hard to argue with the Costco Interstate. You can even get the larger 27F for $100 taxes paid. The advantage with Costco is ANYTHING happens in the 36 months (3 years) you return it and they hand you another without batting an eye. The warranty even starts new with the replacement. The Northstar is and amazing battery but not really sure what I'm getting that's so much better then the Interstate when I can buy 4 of the Interstate's for the price of a Northstar. Also, good luck getting the same hassle free warranty service with where ever you buy the Northstar. Hell, you can even buy the Interstate 24F AGM for only $60 more if that's what floats your boat.

As one addition, if you are looking at battery charge voltage on AGM batteries there is a difference between cycle and float.

Tundras can easily float an AGM at an ideal 13.8 volt charge. They can’t bring it up to an ideal 14.7-8 cycle charge without modification or using an external charger.

As an addition, my Northstar battery suddenly had a bad cell and died. Replacement is easy if you go to the dealer you bought it from, but don’t expect service from anyone else. In my case, I had to get a replacement directly from the manufacturer and with covid, building the battery, etc it was about 3.5 months.

    So yes. Costco wins.

Costco is nice if you live close enough to just be able to exchange it if it goes bad and in my experience, I have had 3 from Costco go bad. One in the Tundra and 2 in my wife's car. Not to confidence inspiring after that, but they will just exchange them out so in theory if it goes bad on a yearly basis, you will never have to buy another battery again.

I had an AGM battery (X2 Power) on my Beta Variant Tundra (2012) and yanked it off when I found it would charge correctly. I replaced it with a NAPA Legend battery and all has been well since then.

If you get an AGM, which are like 2 batteries in one, you will NEED a GM or Ford diode to trick your alternator to charge it appropriately. The diodes cost all of $10 or less and slips into the ALT-S 7.5A fuse under hood...you'll have happy charging of them after that...

My vote is AGM personally as they show the best in cold starts and long lasting power when vehicle not running...but without the diode, it's like having lace up boots without laces...

Interstate batteries all the way for me. Never had a problem with one. I buy 6 year batteries and they last 6 years as rated.

On some of the other forums many recommend getting a battery from Walmart since there is at least one in every city should you need a replacement under warranty.

Do you have the towing package with the larger alternator? In which case you're looking for the 27F Interstate which Costco carries. I just put one in my truck 4 months ago after I retired my factory battery after 4.75 years.

I used this in my GX470 when I was running dual batteries.

    https://www.hkbelect.com/product/244-mk3-mini-blade-75a-electronic-fuse-version-micro-blade-compatible-2010/

Kept it pretty close to what Odyssey spec’ed . HBK also makes an adjustable version as well.

Yes, Costco carries a 27F but don't believe it is an AGM battery. I believe they do carry an AGM 24F at Costco.

I have a couple of them...but after buying so many from him (for extended family member's rides with an AGM), he told me about the GM/Ford diode deal...He was a badass for sharing that information as it DOES work...I have it installed my my MIL's GX460 with a Northstar...happy days!

I have the hkb version ready for my truck; great product...whenever the truck decides to give the battery the ghost I'm swapping to an AGM.

Odyssey extreme is what I've heard the most about. My tundra is due for its first battery replacement since I've owned it and I'm going to go with that one. I will say that my Bosch platinum in my 4runner has never let me down. I had the old one in for about 3 years before I decided to switch it out for a new one just because I felt like it's death was coming soon even though it showed no signs of quiting. I've had this one in for about 4 years now. The 4runner sat parked for roughly 2 1/2 years in there because my work truck was used solely during that time. When it came time to start driving it again it fired right up and has been working for the past year with no issues except that it goes dead If parked for a couple of days
