Hey folks, hopefully someone can point me in the right direction. I have searched for a little while now, and see a lot of mention for upgrading foglights on the SR, and a few similar threads. However, I havnt seen a write up for upgrading to auto on headlights, if you have done a swap, or know where the thread is could you lend a hand? I still can’t believe a car made in 2017 didn’t come standard with an auto on light option. Thanks!

Uh....I can't find the thread right now for auto headlights, but you need to buy the light sensor for your center dash(think it's around $10-15). Then you need the new turn signal stalk that has the auto option(think its around $115). Fairly straight forward from here, just remove your steering wheel(several how it's on that) and replace the turn signal stalk

I couldn't believe it either. Maybe I'm fluffy too, but I've done it on my 2017 SR5. Here is a thread on another forum that will fix you right up. The author @eledobleu also posts on Tundras.com: https://www.tundratalk.net/forums/t...-diy-add-autolights-sr5-2014-plug-n-play.html

I may have to do a leather steering wheel while I’m at it.

Thank you guys so much for this information. I need to do this after the holidays. I can't believe that a SR5 with "interior upgrade" package doesn't even have auto headlights. I have gotten spoiled by the domestic brands which have auto headlights pretty much standard equipment even on the ultra base models.

I did notice that the sun load sensor is $165, not $15 like others suggested. However, I did find generic ones on eBay with the same part number for $15. I wonder if there's really that much difference in quality between the $15 eBay one and the $165 Toyota one?

What exactly do the Auto on headlights do?

Extends life of the switch stalk because you don't have to turn the dial multiple times per day. And in my case, it would prevent the annoying chime every time I forget to turn off the headlights because I just came from a long line of 15+ domestic brand trucks and Jeeps which all have auto headlights standard equipment.

I had in my past vehicles for 15 years and can't believe these don't come with it. Put on auto and never think about lights again

Took a few weeks to get the $13 solar sensor from China but it arrived and today the auto lights worked great! Awesome!

If I just had a heated steering wheel and seats I'd be in good shape now. :)

So for those that successfully upgraded to auto headlights, was the harness and connector for the sensor already there?

My truck is a SR5 with "interior upgrade" package and the harness for the solar sensor was already there. I just popped the dummy plug out, replaced with sensor, boom it worked. Installing the auto headlights stalk wasn't all that bad. Took maybe 30 minutes but I went slower to make a YouTube video.

I LOVE automatic headlights. Don't have to constantly fool with the switch manually when I drive into a parking garage, tunnel, dense area of woods along a roadway, fog, etc. Just set it and forget it! It should be standard equipment like it is on the domestic brands. Maybe it is on the new 22 Tundra, I don't know. But it's a great thing to have.

In the Entune display I have sensitivity set half way right now and it seems to be working pretty good. I may bump it up one more notch, we'll see. I think it's a 5 position scale you can set it to in the menu.

So while we’re at it what is the best steering wheel replacement? I was reading about the Corolla the other day. All the same buttons and functionality. Slightly smaller diameter. Paddle shifters. Any other competitors?

I really wanted to upgrade to a leather wheel while I had mine off, but the salvage yards around here are getting $250 to $300 for the urethane wheel like I have and more for leather ones! And that's with a blown air bag module. It's nuts!

You can grab an OEM tacoma leather wheel on ebay for 200-300.

I think it’s the same exact design. You use your old airbag and trim pieces.
