There is a lot of utility in a short truck bed. There is also a lot of utility in a huge truck cab. Sometimes one is full; sometimes the other is. Sometimes it’s both. It’s an extremely versatile setup. My truck is a great hauler of both people and gear for everything I need to do. I’m amazed sometimes at how I can get all 6 of us and all of our gear for a week in this truck with just a retractable bed cover. If I open the cover, I can strap two kayaks into the bed as well.

If I didn’t have three kids and a dog (who can all ride together in the backseat with ample room), I’d probably still get the crewmax because of all the gear and tools I can transport climate-controlled in the cab. I like my wheelbase and the way my truck drives smaller than it is. This is very helpful on trails. So, the 8ft bed double cab wouldn’t work for me.

Our current truck is a 2012 Tacoma V6 DC (the full 4 door) 4WD long bed with a hard tri-fold tonneau and an OEM canoe rack atop the cab. It's ideal for our current travel trailer except, as you stated, the bed depth is shallow for things like 20lb propane tanks and our Champion dual fuel generator. Plus, I find the fuel tank, at 75 litres, to be small when towing.
If we end up upgrading our travel trailer, I'd like to replace the Taco with a '22 Tundra SR5 DC 4WD 6.5' with a soft, rolling tonneau, bed mat and aftermarket canoe rack.

Unfortunately Tacoma access cabs couldn't get the OEM roof rack. My hard kayak is 12.5' and I can carry it OK in the LB. Just have to lash it down well and have all the loose stuff out of the bed. More recently got this very cool inflatable tandem kayak that folds up and fits neatly in the bed under the tonneau. I love my Pace Edwards retractable and lockable hard tonneau... it's reasonably dry and secure and makes it easy to carry those taller loads like the pressure washer and mowers when I need to. We use a hitch mount bike rack... no way to carry 2 bikes in the bed on road trips... need that space for luggage and everything else. But sometimes I toss my bike in there for local rides instead of installing the hitch rack. With the front wheel off I can close the tonneau.

That Silverado EV bed setup does look interesting. And also having a frunk for luggage adds a lot of utility. Unfortunately, it is very far out in the future. I am so tired of all these mfgs playing the game of hyping a future vehicle to spike interest and then taking "reservations" before we even know if they are even any good IRL. Seems like even GM is adopting the fake it until you make it theme.

It’s real. At the Toyota dealer yesterday the salesman I deal with gave me the good news they got the Camry I wanted. Build date end of January. Should come in March. I chose the Camry over the Honda Accord.

Those Camrys are actually pretty nice. I had a well equipped one for rental on a business trip a couple years ago and really liked it.

Yeah thanks. The salesman I know and deal with I drove his 18 to test drive. Very nice car.

I recall testing the earlier version of the safety systems. They Camry didn't (and maybe still doesn't?) have true lane centering but had lane keeping that would detect road sidelines and center lines and steer a bit to keep from going over those... up to a point. I tried it on some longer curves and it wouldn't make it... had to grab the wheel. I haven't driven anything with the current gen safety sense setup. I believe Honda and Acura has true lane centering on some of their models but I really haven't looked into exactly what the Toyota system offers lately, however.

Older thread but the issue is still relevant. In my case the lack of supply was and is good. Now that real world MPGs are being reported I find my initial passion waning somewhat... not that I am really surprised by the results. And the short supply keeps me from acting on impulse. I am in the "want one" camp, not the "need one" camp. So I will probably pass on the 3rd gen Tundra for now and wait for the next Tacoma... or maybe some other alternative if and when I really need a new vehicle. I will keep following here, though to see how this all plays out with the tech, turbos, MPG and supply issues. "Interesting" times.
