I had read his comment in the what did you do today, haha I thought I was responding to you responding on that thread. Either way, lift or no lift, there should be no rubbing

I think it's easier if you remove the wheel because you can visualize whats going on. There's not a ton of space between them, and maybe it's something else.

So on the scale of laziness, if I, for example, took it to DT for a rotation and asked them to whack with a hammer as needed, would that be an easy path to victory?

My driveway is maybe 10-15 degrees though I do have wheel chocks and a breaker bar and torque wrench. Just seems like an easier job with a lift I'm thinking...

One of mine got pushed around a tad, it's more finesse and feel/sound than hammer. I never heard anything driving, just sitting there with the wheel off spinning it.

Ah, so DIY is the way to go then? Thanks. Jack it up and spin and listen? Rinse and repeat?

I do everything in a sloped driveway. I got wheel chocks a while back, but I would do this with a floor jack, breaker bar and torque wrench (in park e brake) all day long.

For sure. If you have a sloped drive, better to put the front end uphill for this, have it in park with e brake on. Only lift it enough to get the wheel(s) off, don't go under the truck without chalks and stands, which you don't need to. I could do both sides in 8-12 minutes safely. But, you can also look around and inspect stuff. May not be the shields.

I gave it a solid visual just now, it's parked on the street. Did not see clean metal anywhere visible.

So, with the wheel off I'd then turn the rotor and likely hear it scraping on the shield? And the shield is slightly bigger than the rotor hence you can bend it by hand away from the rotor? Which is something that's hard to do with the wheel on b/c the wheel gets in the way? Hopefully I'm understanding this correctly.

I don't own a floor/shop jack yet but I have the OEM jack of course and I can do blocks if needed.

Yes, turn the wheel. A bit of noise is normal, it's the brakes - sounds like soft grinding. The heat shield is bigger than the rotor, it is thin sheet metal. You won't find shavings IMO, it's too light of a steel.

Pretty much other than the light brake sound you may hear and maybe only during parts of the turn, by spinning the rotor and looking you will see and feel if anything is going on, shield or whatever if that's where the problem is.

Then only do (probably only choice) one wheel at a time. I think with a floor jack on fronts, that's the only option as well unless you add stands. Still going back and forth with the jack though.

Thanks. I'm pretty sure I understand exactly what the shield is. Tried pulling it from the back with a flathead in my buddy's driveway but I think I only made it worse if I did anything at all. I'll give it a whirl tomorrow in daylight and see, at the very least I can check to see if it's one wheel or both.

Harbor freight is your friend. Just make sure you get something that's long reach. I've got the heavy duty low profile, long reach Daytona brand jack that came out 4 or 5 years ago. Worth every penny. Think it's up to $250 now but still a great deal. Lot safer then messing with the factory jack.

It's likely time. But, on the flip side, my driveway is just not very safe for much. Sloped into the street, lots of traffic at up to 40mph (it's 25mph zone) and on a T where many people turn including big rigs. Kind of a cluster really. Hence my work in the driveway is going to be rather limited. I have some plastic gorilla ramps which work well to get some height when needed or to level it out a bit, but I think other than a little bit here and there I'd rather just take it to DT for full wheel swaps b/c they are about 1 mile away and pretty awesome to me.

I definitely want a shop jack at some point but I think I want a house with a shop first and foremost.

Maybe that drive is steeper than I imagined. Mines steep enough to get round things running away, but not too bad for work.

I could be over-estimating. I’m also likely a bit more cautious because of high foot traffic with kids and plenty of bike and car traffic. It’d be safer if I got it in the garage but that will take a lot of moving things around.

May be like mine. Hard to see slope/grade in pictures...but admittedly, I don't do things that would be considered unsafe, but I do whatever work I want at home. I try to keep the banging down early and late for the neighbors.

This reminds me, I just sold my floor jack on Saturday for $30 on NextDoor because the damn thing doesn't go up tall enough for any of my vehicles now. The new Highlander and my truck, you can't jack from any outer body line jack point. Only diffs and crossmembers, which is a PITA if you need to do a tire.

I've been resorting to the OEM scissor jacks when I need to rotate tires and stuff which is, yet again, a PITA.

I was going to ask y'all what you're using for floor jacks. I'd prefer a floor jack that doesn't eatup a metric shit-ton of floor space, doesn't cost $250+, but is light, reliable, and jacks high, without risk of catostrophic failure (ala HF, NT, and other chinesium-heavy-not-great-QC suppliers).

Dave, whatever you buy jack-wise, just make sure the damn thing has a reach greater than 14-16" because that definitely doesn't cut it for single-corner lifts IMO.

Rough ballpark is 2’ drop over 15’ which would be 13%. I wonder how much my gut is off on that calc though. Hmmm.

I'm pretty sure my jack is made in China. I don't know the name or where I bought it, but I've had it 15-20 years. Probably got it at a chain parts store. It came with a rebuild kit, I've never used. It's on the bigger side, but not those hand break massive release types. I cant remember but probably paid $100 back then. It's definitely higher than 14-16" easy 20+. I use wood blocks for frame up suspension full droop (rear). Occasionally, blocking frame and stands for the highest lift. I think it's 2 1/2T...

Better, yes. I’m not sure as good as the Tacoma but definitely better than before. Didn’t get a good look at color before it got dark but I’ll take a photo next to the lap belt tomorrow and post it.

Oh and also, I didn’t label mine side-wise and went to install them. With a 50/50 chance I realized I had them swapped. The alignment hooks are different between the two sides. So no real need to label them though that was smart of you to do that. Also, I hope the connector is supposed to go in loom feeding up. That’s how I remember it but I didn’t take pictures.

Yeah I figured they were side specific but you wouldn’t notice till installed so I just labeled mine.
My wires faced down but I don’t know if it makes a difference.
