Just found this potential recall when plugging my vin into the Toyota recall site. 2020 Tundra SR5 Anyone else seeing this?

    Title
Safety Recall 21TA06 (Interim Notice 21TB06) - Certain 2018-2021 Model Year Tundra - Potential Increased Risk of Vehicle Fire
    Status
    Remedy Not Available
    Description
The subject vehicles are equipped with halogen headlamps that allow the circuits for both the high and low beam bulb filaments to be energized at the same time when the high beams are switched on.
    Remedy
Toyota is currently preparing the remedy. When the remedy is available, Toyota dealers will modify the engine wire harness assembly and inspect the headlight bulb connector, bulb, and headlight assembly. If one or more of these components is found to be damaged due to this overheating condition, the damaged component(s) will be replaced with new ones as needed.

It must be in the harness. So I'd guess it would be a potential issue. I'm going to call the dealer on Tuesday.

I haven't received an email but ran the recall check from the Toyota website and it pulled up for my vehicle. Guess we will just wait and see.

I plugged in my VIN and got the recall notice.

Aftermarket LED bulbs in mine, but I'm guessing that shouldn't matter for recall purposes.

    Not sure at this point.
Got the notice on the Toyota app. Wonder if they’ll replace my halogen unit with the LED unit… o_O

The dealer will modify the engine wire harness? That sounds absolutely terrifying.

This kind of stuff has been going on for decades. It's not a big deal. I worked as a dealer tech for several years. I've done countless recalls. Both mechanical and electrical.

A H4 bulb wasn’t designed to run this way, it’d produce a lot of heat with both filaments lit

Sounds like a good reason to upgrade the terrible halogens to LEDs (OEM or aftermarket) and skip the recall

Looks like it will be all models with halogen headlights. Glad I'm running Morimoto XB's although it would be interesting to know Toyotas stance on running aftermarket LED assemblies in regards to the recall. It sounds like its just a bulb heat issue.

I just heard about the recall. I have a 2015 SR5 that i upgraded to the OEM 2019 LED using iHacker's wiring harness. When my high beams are on my low beams are also on. Does anyone know if this is the same problem with the recall. Just trying to make sure that I didn't upgrade into a problem.

    Thanks.

Subbed. I've upgraded to aftermarket LED bulbs that have fans to help with cooling... So it will be interesting to know more when it becomes available.

Has anyone had this resolved yet? I looked up my vin and it says the recall doesn’t apply to my build, however they are halogen bulbs and the driving bulb doesn’t go out when high beams are on….

The recall is for 2018 and newer with halogens. With leds, the low beams will stay on when you switch to high beams......normal ops.

What year is yours? If it's 18 or newer, I would call the dealer and ask them to pull it, or call Toyota directly.

I think it's a relay or wiring issue. High and low beams are 2 separate connectors. Common sense tells us that if the low doesn't turn off with high beams, it's coming from an input trigger such as the switch or a relay, not the headlight assembly itself. It will be interesting to see what Toyotas remedy is.

Just hope it doesn’t make the halogens worse than they already are. If so it will speed up my led conversion timeline

Just keep an eye on the recall remedy. Maybe Toyota will update everyone to leds. I have the Morimotos in mine. I'm still on the recall list though.

Nice now I got both vehicles on recall...so one starts on fire so the 2nd goes out to rescue and the power steering goes out on that one...
with no current fix in site?
Tundras make very expensive planters or chicken coops...

I don't think it is due to bulb heat. I think it is due to current draw with both bulb filaments on at the same time over heating the wire

The low beams should turn off when the high beams are on. It's a relay or harness issue I bet.

A lot of posts for a variety of manufacturing years for tundras say there hi and lo beams both stay on for hi. I think this has been going on for years. Not sure why the recall is only for a very small recent years.

maybe due to the power of the new lights or if they forgot a electronic safety measure within the circuitry.

If I had to choose between the headlight recall and the power steering recall I guess I'd choose the headlight recall...seems easier for Toyota to resolve...
Anyone know if this wiring harness is shared between multiple platforms? if so the supply chain problem might be easier for this fix eh?
