looking at a used 2019 today anything to watch out for?

I put a 2019 SR5 4x4 TRD off road tundra on hold at carmax with 31k miles on it is there anything i should look out for besides the high price? 42K

It is one owner with a clean record has a spray in bedliner only comes with one key with the remote un-lock not sure how much they are to get a second. There are no open recalls on it.

My main concern is did the previous owner change the oil.

 

Isn't there a transmission cooler issue wirh the 2019? Or am I wrong? Not 100 %sure but I thought I saw some threads here about an issue with the transmission in regards to towing.

 

no issue. 2019 model year doesn’t have the prior model years transmission cooler. It has the puck style. Depending on your towing needs, you may want to upgrade if higher transmission fluid temps bother you. Toyota doesn’t seem to think it’s a problem. Much debate as to whether the forum experts, or the Toyota engineers are right about this one.

 

Good to know. I have the 2018 and I tow a small camper but never had an issue with it. Hopefully it stays that way lol

 

I only have a small trailer for the lawn mower nothing to large. Where does one find service records as i can't find any showing any service done to the truck only when it was listed for sale.

 

The puck is a warmer, not a cooler IIRC.

 

You might be able to put the VIN in the Toyota app and see if it pulls any dealer service records. Another option, and it depends on the dealer, you can call the service department at a dealership with the VIN and they will pull it and see if it shows any service checks performed by a dealership.

 

Do you have a link to the toyota app? That is a good idea all i can find is the sales record.

 

I have gotten records from mycarfax.com and from the Toyota owners website.

For the key, mine only had 1 key when I bought it, and I rented a programmer from tomskey.com along with a new key fob (I had push button start). I got the non branded one, but then ultimately bought an OEM key fob from mcgeorge Toyota parts online and returned the non branded fob. It was a pretty easy process to do the key programming with them. I would use them again if I needed another key.

Carmax uses autocheck and it shows no service history but the toyota owners does and so does mycarfax. Is that different from carfax.com because i didn't have to pay anything.

Mycarfax.com com is free, it just shows service records (same ones as if you had the Carfax) and recalls and things, but for my Toyotas, it shows the same service records as Carfax or the Toyota owners site. And the Toyota's owner site you can download manuals and stuff too, so I think that would be a great place to start.

 

This has been discussed as nauseam in previous posts. The Toyota literature refers to the puck as a cooler. It functions the same way the old trans coolers that ran through the bottom of the radiator did. Coolant flows through the puck to initially bring the trans fluid up to operating temp quicker, then once trans fluid temp exceeds radiator temp, it acts as a cooler. There is no more fluid to air cooler for the ATF on 2019 plus models, only this fluid to fluid one. The ATF used is not like the old school stuff. It doesn’t suffer degradation at higher operating temps. For heavier towing applications, a fluid to air trans cooler may still be a good solution.

 

That makes total sense now. I knew it was a warmer but forgot about the cooling portion after the temp increase. I added a cooler to mine for towing our TT. Temp dropped by almost 30 degrees. Now a pot stirring contest is in all of the posts about switching to "cold air intakes" lol.

 

2019 has turn signal recall, fuel pump recall, and headlight recall for non led lights.

Yes the aux cooler is deleted on this. It has been discussed every which way you can imagine. If your duty cycle is low to moderate you don't need it. However, if you are OCD you will need it. It is a fairly easy installation for any mechanic. I orginally refused to put one on. then I decided I didn't like the lack of control over transmission fluid temps and put one on. My duty cycle is moderate in the average. It is low for many months, then extremely high in remote areas. I'm also high on OCD spectrum.

There hasn't been a major rash of transmission failures on 2019+ trucks for any reason; further that the few failure there are it isn't a clear case that temps are the issue either. The AB60F is a really really tough SOB.

Also...if owner did own oil changes I'd consider that a very positive thing. Most oil change places including dealers are staffed with extremely low skill personnel.

 

Looks like the oil was changed every 5000-7000 miles at a Toyota dealer.

Any idea on how long the stock tires last? I know with a Honda crv I had bought the stock tires where gone by 17k

 

It depends on a lot of factors for tires. Best thing to do is check the tread thats left and kind of calculate how much more time you have based on the existing wear and the mileage on the truck. I would say you have anywhere from 10k-30k miles of tread left based on an almost infinite number of variables affecting wear.

 

There is a few strange things replaced on the truck. The radio has been replaced one of the front light connectors has been modified, low pressure fuel pump.

They abbreviate the repairs.

 

A lot of the time if head unit freezes or bluetooth connectivity is flaky, they'll replace the stock deck as an option under warranty. Fuel pump is part of the recall.

Is using tomskey the cheapest way to get another key? I have no idea what the dealer would charge.

 

I have no idea, I probably should have shopped around a little more, but when I saw their ad after doing a search I went with them. My local Toyota dealer is pretty high priced with everything else so I didn't check there :,-)

 

The only thing to check for is cam tower leaks.

 

2018 model has a trans cooler.

 

I'll add, if you buy it, check the rear diff oil. Some don't do diff breather mod. and back boats into the lake which can flood the rear diff with H2O. Not very kind to gears and bearings!

The 2019 version of a transmission cooler. There is a puck, not a small radiator type cooler. There are many threads, search and you will be reading for days ! Most get into a pissing match , weed through the nonsense and make your own decision .
