Water-cooled Intercooler?

Does anybody have any info on the water-cooled intercoolers? Are they fed with coolant or is it a separate system? My build sheet calls out water-cooled intercoolers which I thought was different in the OEM market as air-cooled is so much cheaper and seemingly easier. Just curious where they are located and what cooling media feeds them. Thanks.

 

its located on top of the motor, just above the V, fed with coolant.

 

No point trying to cool the air charge with 200°F+ engine coolant. That would defeat the purpose.
Likely a separate system.

EDIT: Pages 538 and 539 in the owner's manual. Separate reservoirs for engine and for intercooler.

The engine is equipped with two parallel turbochargers (one by each side) with electronically controlled wastegate valves. Each turbocharger sends compressed air through its own air-to-water intercooler integrated inside a polymer intake air surge tank mounted on top of the engine. Intercoolers and turbochargers use a separate cooling system with an additional radiator and electric pump.

Its a separate system with its own two heat exchangers. The blue exchangers to the right and left of the radiator:



Toyota was not messing around when they designed the cooling system for this engine.

That article said one thing I hope comes true, but I am not holding my breath for: that the engine will find its way into the Tacoma. That would be a hoot!

 

I bet the Tacoma gets a 2.xL Inline 4 turbo like the ranger unless its like some TRD Ultra edition to compete with a Ranger Raptor.

Word on the street is the next gen Colorado/Canyon will be getting the GM 2.7L Turbo from the Silverado with 315hp/350 torque @ 1600 rpm. That will be a game changer in the mid-size truck world. You would actually be able to tow a decent trailer without it completely sucking.

 

Yup, that is more likely. Although the turbo V-6 would make a compelling choice. Being that a Tacoma weighs 1500 pounds less than a Tundra It would be a blast to drive and get better MPG, too. But I suspect packaging in the smaller body and frame might be problematic without a lot of re-engineering.

 

The good news is the next gen Taco is based on the same TNGA platform as the 2022 Tundra, so maybe it will already have the provisions built in. Who knows.

 

I hope they get working on this stuff and that the chips start flowing. My 2009 Tacoma won't last forever. A mini raptor with good MPG would be fantastic. But knowing Toyota and their weird way of making options available they would probably offer it only with a short bed which would be a non-starter for me. And I could probably never go back to Chevy having had an S10 back in the day before my Tacoma. So many issues, such low quality. The only positive thing about it as compared to the Tacoma was the frame didn't rust nearly as bad or as quickly. I don't know where Toyota gets their cheap steel. Maybe it is just very highly engineered and selected to make the frames disappear at about the same time as the rest of the vehicle wears out with normal mileage. ;-)

 

Almost, the Tundra has a single large intercooler on top of the surge tank (and how you know that name makes me curious...). The original version of the engine in the LS500 uses separate intercoolers. Spot on with rest.
