I'll preface this by saying that I realize that Ram's aren't well regarded on the Tundra forum. I'm just curious if anyone has bought or has had any experience with a TRX? I'm asking here because I respect all of the knowledge and honest feedback of the members.

I currently have a 2020 Platinum Tundra, and I usually trade every 2-3 years. I was waiting for the 2022's to come out before figuring out what my next truck would be, and I'm really not liking the redesign. I drove a TRX a few weeks ago and I loved it. I found a few dealers that have significant discounts off MSRP, so I'm considering moving away from Toyota (after 3 4Runners and 3 Tundras).

Let me know what you think.

    I would.

If you are not 100% satisfied with the 3rd Gen tundra I would not spend that kind of money on a truck that didn’t put a smile on my face every day.

Honestly, IMO all trucks have pros and cons, what works best for you is what you need to determine. Personally, if time wasn't an issue, a full restoration of an early to mid 90's F250 7.3 PS would be on my driveway right now.

Sit in the front passenger seat in any RAM…see if the transmission hump that prevents you from keeping your left leg straight/flat bothers you. Until they fix that, Ram trucks will be a no go for my consideration

I reserve my opinions about the TRX until they start getting over 100,000 miles. Then we will see how the truck holds up. Personally, you would be better off to throw a supercharger on your 2020 Tundra. It will be fast and reliable.

Don’t know much about RAM…but if it puts a smile on your face and you don’t like the redesign Tundra then go for the RAM.

…given your history of trading every 2-3 years you will get rid of the RAM before problems develop and be in the market again before Toyota touches anything on the 3rd gen…so have your cake and eat it too.

I would say to wait a bit and test drive a well optioned out Tundraif you haven’t already as I found that the pictures don’t do the design any justice

I wanted a faster vehicle so I also bought a Chevy SS... because 4 door sedans with big V8’s are hilarious.
    Trade every 2-3 years?

I wouldn’t buy any Toyota products if I did that, the biggest feature of a Toyota should be long term reliability and durability. You don’t get the benefit in 2-3 years but you still pay for it. If the 3rd Gen has nothing else to offer you then don’t bother, especially at the premium price Toyota wants to charge for one.

    Go get that TRX!

The TRX is a bad ass machine. I have a friend who ordered one a few months ago. Build date kept getting pushed back and he almost canceled his order. Once he got it he said it was well worth the wait. Took a drive in it and it is impressive. He doesn’t keep any car / truck longer than a couple years anyway. He replaced a 2019 Tacoma. He couldn’t be happier and his opinion is that when he gets rid of it he should be able to get close to what he paid for it……I say do it.

I like the TRX. Ford and Dodge have dual-handedly created the super-truck class of production pick ups. It is an awesome thing to experience even on the sidelines.

I like the Raptor for the same reasons and the new 5.2L in the Raptor looks like a sweet package.

I have the disposable income for a TRX or Raptor but went with TRD Pro. It was the more sensible option to me at least.

If you are in the YOLO phase then go for it.

If something in range of $100K was on the table for a vehicle purchase I'd be looking at something with a Lexus badge or importing a Landcruiser.

If I were going to spend that much money on a non work (making me money) truck. I would 100% buy the TRX...the Toyota would not even be in the running. If Ram still has their Max Care unlimited available, buy it and don't ever worry about a thing. That warranty is unlimited miles and covers everything except brakes tires and body damage. If you trade every 2-3 years don't bother and have fun ripping and tearing in that thing.

There is one Ram truck that I think has just awesome features—the Power Wagon. Front and rear lockers, sway bar disconnects, can fit 37s stock, etc. A while back, I started reading through the Ram forums to see how long people were hanging onto their PWs and what kind of issues they were having. It was…not great. We’ll just say that.

Surprise, Toyota guy here doesn’t trust Ram!
I’d probably go Harrop Stage 1 with my truck if I wanted more fun out of it.
Lol. The fact they even offer a warranty like that tells me everything I need to know. Having all your problems covered under an unlimited warranty is Ram basically telling you “yeah, we know it’s going to be making trips back to the shop for its entire life.” Even if stuff is covered, it’s still a giant pain in the rear to go deal with it every time something pops up. Still, I get what you’re saying. It’s a fun truck. Have fun for a bit, then sell it.

I have owned 2 4th gen rams. 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton, they had the same reliability as the 2 toyota trucks I have owned at the same mileage. The Max care warranty was nice to have available if you were planning on racking up mega miles and or really using a truck hard during ownership. Friend of mine does a bit of contract hauling for things and racks up mega miles on his Ram, he had an engine issue around 350K...$100 deductible and a week or so later, new engine and back on the highway. So for some circumstances it can be handy. I am not sure they are still offering that option or not. The last Ram I bought was in 2014.

I can bet if Toyota offered something like that for 2-3K people would buy it...I mean...you could pretty much never have to get another truck, until the value of the vehicle is lower than repair cost and they they cash you out.

It is like you are inside my head reading my thoughts word for word.

I like the TRX (and Raptor) but I hate dealing with recalls, warranty repairs, etc about 3 times more.

If that is the case, that truck is a strong candidate for purchasing, storing it for 10 years or so and rolling it thru Barrett Jackson or Meachums auctions

I'd say if you trade every 2 or 3 years you are probably safe going for the TRX. But if you are like me and keep a vehicle for 10 years or more, better get the Toyota.

well, the TRX is an awesome toy. but it gulps fuel so fast I can't see it getting a lot in the way of range. Going on my (admittedly faulty) memory, I don't think it has a lot of payload and they spare in the bed won't help either. If you want a second vehicle/toy, and you don't take reliability into consideration, it looks badass fun. But it doesn't look too practical to me...

    Ram/Fiat reliability isn't legendary

As for "2-3 years you'll be fine"... If you spend time in dealerships over those 2-3 years with no vehicle because of the 235th issue you may think otherwise. Also, if your long-term reliability sucks, your resale value will suck too. Resale is a product of remaining useful life. Less cost to maintain == higher resale. You don't have to drive it for 10 years for bad reliability to cost you. You get that when your trade it in.

I’ve always read it was just narrow and no hump. I’ve driven a few 21 rams limited and never noticed a hump in the passenger side. It’s just not as wide as the drivers side.

Ha. Yeah, even if every issue is covered under the warranty, that is still time out of my day going to the dealer, explaining the problem while they stand there with real concerned looks on their faces, then either having some dumb rental to tool around in or having my wife come pick me up, only to come back X hours or days later for them to say “well we couldn’t recreate the problem,” which really means “we’re going to see how much fuss you want to raise before we actually deal with the issue”…

I hate that whole song and dance with every fiber of my being. No thanks. At all. Ever.

Yeah if reliability is a concern you should buy a Gen 3 instead. Those have had a flawless rollout so far.
