I have tried multiple dealers spent hours online and on the phone looking for a tundra. One dealer told me to expect it to be July. I just want a 4x4 crew cab SR5. It isn’t that hard lol. Car buying in 2022 sucks. I miss the old days of just going to the lot and having like 8-10 trucks to look at and picking one out. Rant over sorry

I don't get it either, aren't they building 200 new Tundras a day in San Antonio? At that rate, the market should be flooded with Tundras by now

You’d think, but there’s folks on here that bought two to see what they wanted (and now want to pull the heated seats out of one to put in the other - dafuq!?). And then the CA dealers sitting on 4 or 5 because they have a 15k ADM.

Toyota went a few days not making any new trucks.

On Autotrader there are almost 1600 listed. Slightly up from last week.

I would imagine they are addressing the various bugs people have been reporting.

I've decided to wait until Spring to get mine.

My local dealer has several new Tundras but they are all crap builds.

i call it a blessing in disguise. it's the first production run of a new vehicle, let others act as the product testers and make a well judged decision later in the year.

A lot of them that are being made are already presold too. So they never really hit the lot.

    Speculation time...

I'm willing to bet this trend will continue for years. Well beyond chip shortages, pandemics, and logistics/supply-chain struggles. I think car manufacturers have learned that "throttling" the supply has a very real profit benefit to them and their dealer network. Gone are the days of having 30-50 (or more) vehicles sitting on a lot in December and dealers & manufacturers offering aggressive incentives at "Model Year End Clearance Sales" and stuff like that.

I know some dealers out there are selling below MSRP...but the majority are selling at or above MSRP. This goes beyond "hot" models like the Tundra, Tremor, Lightning, Bronco, etc. There's ADM being added to normal vehicles like Corollas, Accords, Escapes, Explorers, etc.

I have to imagine that selling vehicles while in-transit means certain costs are reduced for dealerships. It also means that manufacturers don't have to offer as many rebates or incentives to the dealerships. Everyone probably makes more money in the end.

Toyota, even with all of the supply chain issues it's experienced AND not taking factory orders from consumers for over a year, became the #1 selling auto manufacturer in the US in 2021. They overtook GM who still takes factory orders from customers. I think it's working for them, and I speculate it will continue for a long while.

    My "tin-foil hat" 2 cents.

I don't have a lot of patience so it's easy for me to say. But.... lol.

The more you wait, the more likely they'll have fixed the initial bugs and flaws. You'll thank them later for making you wait. Just not now.

I can see that, but I also feel like people are going to get tired of not being able to find the vehicle they want when they want it. If I am going to spend 60k on a vehicle, I want to touch it and drive it and take it home that day, not order a vehicle that I've never seen and wait 3-4 months for it.

Supply (lack of) and demand (very high). My friend ordered a 22' TRD Camry back in the beginning of September. It won't be here until the end of February. They just started the build at the factory.

Yesterday, there was a SR5 CM 2wd in white and a SR5 CM 4wd in red at www.lowetoyota.com in Warner Robins, Ga. I don’t think they do a great job at keeping their online inventory updated.

Hang in there man, you’ve got a good reliable truck with years of life left in it; certainly enough to wait out this nonsensical auto market. Bide your time, build your war chest up, and wait for the correction on autos and a lot of other things. There will be deals to be had for those with financial self discipline!

They had two there this past weekend (9 Jan 22) black & blueprint blue.
They seem to be decent guys to work with.

I drove the blue one.... Very much niceness !

This was an awesome, super thought-provoking post, @KroppDuster - well done!!
Car dealers have scaled back their sales teams and are fiscally reaping the benefits of less is more - and not just in head count.
MSRP+ on on virtually all makes/models is the new norm today. And when you're selling less at greater margins and with reduced headcount, that means record dealer profits (on both new and pre-owned).
Combine this with Parts & Service departments which historically was what really keeps the lights on at any dealership, then your tin-foil hat is shining brightly.

I think it'll eventually go back to the old ways. Car manufacturers compete fiercely. Although they can throttle production to boost profit, there's always someone who's willing to make more and sell more and grab more marketshare. Toyota taking over GM as the best selling brand in 2021 proves the point. When parts shortages are over, it'll be pretty dumb for any car maker to limit production and starve consumers of choices.

Used car mgr at a local steal-ealership tried to convince me of this, this past weekend while bending my arm to buy a Tundra before the next price increase... "These are Rare" he kept saying, like it was some sort of collectors item.

    I ain't buying it.

While it is likely to continue for a bit until manufacturers source another vendor for chips, you have to have product and inventory available. I for one want to see, feel, smell and drive what I am bargaining for.
I'm not about to place an order, wait some indefinite time and likely be bummed out when they don't deliver on time. They too run the risk that I cancel the order after thinking about it or maybe finding something else in the meantime.

I don't think they can afford to do onesy, twoseys and build pre-sold orders alone.....

Does the added charge over MSRP not go to the dealer ? I don't think Toyota benefits from that.

This dealer I was at quoted me almost $8K over MSRP and a 6 month wait while another dealer 40 miles away told me the same afternoon I could have a truck to my specs end of Feb or early March with a $3k over MSRP.
(Both quoted yet another dealer's $15k :blahblah:) yeah, yeah, yeah.....

They will say anything and when you go back to discuss it further, that guy will be no where to be found and it's round #2 with a new guy.

I say unless you really need a vehicle, cool your jets. I'll bet the manufacturers are just as eager to have inventory and want to gear up.
