I agree, business models are indeed changing. Not just with car dealerships, most businesses in general. Demand for wood is sky high, prices are through the roof. Once consumers resign to paying higher prices it is over, we will never see the old normal again.

I hear ya. Cheers! Was doing some PVC work a few weeks ago....the small can of purple PVC cleaner has been roughly three and a half to four bucks for eternity....paid almost EIGHT. Where will it normalize? Five bucks? Inflation is on the way gentlemen.

Keep in mind.....the used car/truck legit shortages will continue for some time due to the recent hurricane hit. Keep in mind that a lot of water damaged used cars/trucks will be showing up shortly too. Beware....

I've spoken to a dozen contractors in MN and they ALL tell me there is NO lumber shortage. If you go directly to the mill you can get as much of whatever you want at normal prices.
It's as manipulated as anything. Aaaannnndddd we keep falling for it.

If I did not like my 21 Tundra LunaRock Pro and my 19 Z06 I would flipping both of them right now. And making a big profit. But then I would not have them to enjoy. What a dilemma!!

Looming inflation? You better check again. Inflation is already here. Beef, gas and green fees are all up bigly in the last 15+ months for a few examples.

These are weird times, indeed. Back in March when I had to drive 40 miles to a CVS for my second Covid shot I had some time to kill. I stopped into a Honda dealer there just to walk the lot and see what they had. Salesman came out and it seemed like he was more interested in getting my Tacoma than selling me something.

What is reality at this point? Toyota doing what they do best. At least the product is superior. One interesting thing is they claim the engine is new and not from the Lexus. Scary?

Yup, it is bizarre how many folks get the useless short beds such that is what dealers seem to stock most, especially in Tacomas. I have a Tacoma access cab "long" bed which are a little more common than crew cab long beds. I use my truck as a DD and for road trips as well as some light duty work at the farm and even the "long" bed is marginal. The short beds seem to be merely a stylistic thing that people like. I honestly don't understand why. I mean with a 5' bed why do you even want a truck?? Because it really isn't a truck. It also seems like Toyota creates unicorns by the way they set up the options lists for various trims, cabs styles, colors and bed lengths. One might expect that you can just mix and match to get exactly what you want... but you'd be wrong.

You gain an almost infinite amount of bed length by opening the tailgate. I have hauled furniture and appliances, 10’ lumber, wire fencing and pvc in my short bed and never had an issue.

Damn, the 86 is some pathetic numbers. I thought those would be selling like hotcakes. Few years back when the drifting thing was at its peak, everyone wanted a 86 corolla or a 240 and stuff like that, guess that fad as gone south bigtime.

Yes, that's fine for hauling a kayak (but shorter beds makes even that harder) and occasional lumber runs but my issue is on road trips I usually have a tonneau cover and use the bed like a big trunk that keeps stuff relatively dry. Short bed just doesn't hold enough even for the 2 of us and the dog. Long bed on the Tacoma that is shallower than a Tundra bed just barely makes it. Luggage, bikes (although those usually go on a hitch rack), coolers, etc. etc. I mean if you have a crew cab and actually use the back for people you are going to be seriously short on luggage space.

I won't have to worry about that, my Tacoma barely fits in my 1-car garage. No version of the Tundra has even the slightest chance!

dump run of small debris or hauling a load of landscaping material don't work so well with tailgate down.

Yes with gate down you can haul longer lumber, but not more than twice the length (simple physics). So a 5.5 bed can haul 10'. A 6.5 bed can haul 12'. With my tailgate up and back window down I can haul 16'! Ask me how I know, haha.

Also you can't sleep in the bed of 5.5' truck (easily) that's a deal breaker for me.

Short beds work fine for some people, they do look better as well in my opinion. But no debate that longer beds can serve more uses.

But dealerships are making more money instead of sitting on cars. And they are doing it with less overhead. They don’t have to pay as many people to sell the cars, they don’t have to keep as many people around to maintain the vehicles on the lot, they don’t have to pay taxes on their inventory because most of it’s gone, etc etc. Less overhead and lots of moving inventory means they easily make more money.

I looked in a short bed with a tonneau cover on it when I was truck shopping and, at that time, before we even had a kid, I knew my wife brought too much stuff on camping trips for it to fit. That's why I have a canopy on my truck.

Factories and employees are expensive, I think Toyota is making as many trucks as they can, while managing their supplies. Due to shortages of parts, covid disruptions, and a hungry for truck market, the shortage will continue for some time.

Try not to look for conspiracies if there are obvious reasons to explain a situation.

I was talking to a dealer and they were marking up $10k. I said I'm not paying more for a truck than what MSRP says it worth. Just like you wouldn't pay me more than what my trade in is worth. He then tells me with the shortage of inventory they couldn't keep the business open by selling at MSRP, things will change and go back to normal eventually once they get more inventory, hopefully, then they will get me the best deal. I replied back that Toyota isn't charging more for the truck than what it is worth and when they get more inventory to let me know and I'll purchase a vehicle at $10k under MSRP

While I agree with pretty everything you are saying except for the first sentence and half of your last sentence. They have no where near the amount of new and used vehicles available they had a year and a half ago. Many lease buyouts today are very worth while so people are not giving those vehicles back which become CPO’s. And dealership swaps are almost no existent from what I have been told by friends I have in vehicle sales. Quantity simply isn’t not there…. I am not defending dealerships but certain realities aren’t their fault either.

I started my next truck fund last month. It should be funded by 2025 if I feel the need to buy another one. By then, my current truck will be 9 years old and maybe 150k miles. Probably have a lot of life left in the vehicle.

The reason I’m saying this is this market will be crazy until probably 23-24.

The question is- is there a way to still get a great deal? Buy something for MSRP that in a normal market doesn’t offer huge discounts ( Tundra?, Accord?) and get overinflated value for your trade. It is still doable but the challenge seems to be reversed whereby beating the dealer down on theirs was possible with online competition via email because you could compare apples to apples with a simple email to as many sealers as you wanted. Getting 5 dealers to look at your trade is a bit more challenging but that is where the majority of the deal is going to be had or lost in this crazy market.

Here is a example. I am comparing 2 cars I’m looking to get. A 22 Camry XSE and Honda Accord sport. I can get the Camry at msrp and the 2 Honda dealers the one wants 3900 hundred over msrp. No break on being a repeat customer. The other Acura dealer that also owns the Honda dealer they will give me it msrp being a repeat customer. No I don’t need another car but looking at getting a newer car now to replace my older car I’m driving to work. No way I will pay over msrp.
