Official 2022 Tundra 3rd Gen Thread

Toyota North America HQ is in Plano TX. (North Texas) If an Employee has one are on the road, it would make sense to see it there or near the factory in San Antonio, TX. Tundra's are very popular in Texas. Surprisingly I'm relatively close in Fort Worth and have only heard a single buddy mention spotting a 2022 Tundra on the road here. I am deliberately avoiding driving past dealerships. Wanting thrill of spotting one in the wild.

 

Amen on all counts. However, I would say Consumer Reports definitely factors it into their long term scores though, both in terms of the brand overall and that particular model in short and long term reliability. They will say something like "We expect the 2022 Tundra to have _________ reliability. This prediction is based on Toyota's brand history and the previous generation of the Tundra." Long term they definitely show what are and aren't' likely problem areas and even break that down by model year. I think CR has only done one road test on the 22 Tundra so way too soon to comment on reliability. Like many other reviewers they were particularly positive on the powertrain and suspension. Basically that both very well sorted and contributed to a class leading driving experience.

Toyota running a generation so long can be a beating and blessing. For example the cam tower leak, Toyota never fixed this issue and it still plagues trucks all the way through 21' models. I'm sorry but if Toyota actually practiced what they preached they would have solved that issue. Instead they went the way of the other manufacturers and decided x number of owners will have the issue and it will cost us x dollars to just keep producing the way it is, lame IMO.

Most people don't even run vehicles that long so I could see reviewers not focusing on that aspect. Although to some people like myself it is important. It's the reason I bought my wife a new T4R last March.

 

I would argue the cam tower leak isn't really a reliability problem. I haven't heard of anyone having to add oil between changes because of it.

 

They’re popping up now. Look at some of the threads started. A guy with the truck randomly turning off while on the highway driving at 60mph and a bunch of other stuff. It’s going to happen on a redesign. People need to get their heads out of the sand if they think the new tundra won’t have issues. Especially with all the tech they have in it now.

My brother is curious what this means. He has no complaints about his 5.3 yet.

 

Yeah it sure got a LOT more complicated. I guess that’s what happens when you don’t update for 15 years. It’s definitely more powerful and efficient with higher payload and more tech than my truck. I’m happy to give it all due credit. But it only made arguably modest gains in some of those categories despite being wildly more complicated. I’m tempted to think that it won’t be as reliable over the long term as my truck, but I don’t know the extent to which it is over-engineered in relation to anticipated stress load.

 

I agree with his comment. Driven a couple of Silverados and Tahoes with the 5.3 and it always felt sluggish to me. They get great fuel economy (managed 24 mpg in a Tahoe going 70 mph on the highway) but they just feel so slow compared to the other V8 trucks I’ve driven (5.7 RAM, Tundra). I had a chance to drive a 5.3 Silverado with a 10-speed and that was actually much better than before with the 6 speed but it’s still pretty obvious the engine is down 40 hp from the RAM 5.7.

 

I think my brother has the 8 speed. His 2019 is also a fair bit lighter than the previous generation.

 

Does anyone know if black out emblem covers for a ‘21 will fit on the new Tundras emblems. They look to be the same.

Yes it won't make you break down but it's still an issue that persist that Toyota never took care of. Mine leaked so bad it was burning off the heat shield, rare case as most just seep, causing me a dealer visit. Reading all these post just seems like Toyota always gets a pass, turbo waste gate failures... Oh that's a supplier issue not Toyota. Well the same could be said for the gm lifter issue right now. Toyota is not the Toyota of past, yes they are a little better then others but they still have issues. How about the frame rust in the Tacoma's that just keeps moving through the generations because they have not changed that platform since 2005, AIR failures plagued the tundra and Tacoma (my Tacoma suffered this as well), needle bearing issues with the taco and t4r to name a few. Some of these issues stay with the vehicles for a long length of time because Toyota doesn't change things. Now if thats for "reliability" or the basic fact that it saves them a bunch of money and they market it as not Changing or moving forward and people buy it up which I myself am guilty of.

 

Of course Toyota isn’t perfect. None are. The cam tower issue is a non-issue for most people. It sounds like @Alloutdrs1 actually needed to be addressed, which sucks. If mine starts seeping, I’m going to have to make the decision to either ignore it and hope it stays a very slight seep or take it to the dreaded dealer and have them tear the engine apart to fix it. I’m not too keen on the latter to be honest.

It seems there are a lot of people around here who love to talk about how far behind Toyota is on features. They’re correct. But the flip side of that coin is that Toyota is generally exactly that much more reliable. There’s no magic. They overbuild parts. Their targets for service life are longer than others. They reuse and reuse and reuse reliable parts including drivetrains. Toyotas are generally boring to drive and last forever. It’s that simple. The one single database on long-term quality of drivetrains confirms this decisively. My point is, if you’re claiming they’re way behind on features and not really any more reliable than anyone else, then you’re choosing to hold up and look at the one side of the coin while ignoring the other.

My truck is behind almost everything in terms of features. But it works for me. The one thing I anticipate more justifiably than with any other truck is that it will last forever. I’d never buy the first year of a new gen, not even from Toyota. But after the hiccups I bet it is a really dependable truck.

 

the 5.3 is a fine motor. Serviceable. Inoffensive. Duty capable. But go drive the same truck config with the 6.2. Whole different animal. Does that make the 5.3 a bad motor? No. Comparison is the thief of joy.

Issues relative to what? The million miler Tundra was a first year ‘07. Toyota didn’t gain their reputation by letting their customers be the the test mules like Land Rover or Jeep. This model has been in development the better part of a decade. Neither Toyota nor its customer will expect it to have issues and be surprised if it does. 21-22 4WD F150’s are getting recalled for broken driveshafts. I mean how much simpler of a part can you get than that. That is embarrassing, but Ford will still sell the heck out of them.

The challenge here is premium is about $1 CAD per gallon more than regular and we can only get 91 except at a few stations that sell 94 with a ton of ethanol in it (I've heard some guys said the 6.2 will knock on 91). Is the extra performance really worth the extra cost?

 

Not to some. As previously stated. The 5.3 is just fine. If your towing heavy often, there’s some advantage to the 6.2. Everyone I know that drags a big bass boat around all the time with a GM will only drive a 6.2.

looks like shit, blinged out platinum with 22s and the interior is awful, way to many colors and materials once again...

 

Saw my first Gen 3 in the wild today. My wife was shocked how giddy I was lol. It was a blueprint 1794 that crossed by on Stone Oak parkway after I was leaving Starbucks. I'm looking forward to my platinum. I loved the truck but not a fan of the chrome rear bumper pieces. just look out of place. Color match or bust.

 

I don't hate it, but it's not my style. I like the dash and most of the interior, but not really a fan of those seats.

MIL's SO drove a 6.2 and only did 87, never had any complaints and said it hauled ass all the time. He had 2 complaints - not as stable as an HD (he traded it in on an HD) and it didn't sound great. Just had the stock exhaust and he made the mistake of revving it next to my TRD Dual Exhaust.

The 5.3 is a traditional truck engine - VERY torquey, but limited at the top end. You hit 120 km/h roughly and it starts to die out, the 6.2 just goes and goes and goes until the governor.

 

Never seen a speed limit above 110 in Western Canada.

 

The Coq is 120. Plus most 110 highways if you're not doing 10-15 over you're in the way. Add in passing maneuvers where I consistently get to 130 or so on 2 lane highways, the 5.3 leaves you wanting more quite a bit.
