Anyone ever mess around with shortcuts in iOS?

I created an automation using shortcuts. When CarPlay connects I get an audible greeting, thru CarPlay, that tells me about the weather, tells me my battery status and asks me if I need a mask or gas.

this one is sortof long - I don’t want to hear all that every time I start my truck, so I changed it to 3 parts. When CarPlay connects it checks to see if I’ve connected to CarPlay at all during the day. It’s looking for my first drive. If it is the first drive it runs the shortcut I’m showing below. If I’ve already connected earlier in the day it runs a much shorter version of this one.

It’s a little nerdy, but it’s kind of cool.

This is pretty cool. Would it work for Android units running Zlink?

I didn’t know you could do this. I’ll have to test it.

So for those of us who are not geeky enough to know how you did it but think it is pretty cool, how did you actually do it?

I have this setup now, but just tried it in my truck with zlink. Unless I missed automating it, it’s not working. Will try on my car that uses wired CarPlay next.

Shortcuts is specific to iOS. There may be something similar in Android but I don’t know.

Once you build the Shortcut you can go to Automations and run the shortcut when CarPlay starts.

So I finally figured out how to set it up I just need to figure out how you get it to check if you have connected to carplay earlier in the day or not.

Here’s how I did my CarPlay voice greeting. Note this works in iOS (iPhone). There may be something similar for Android, but my experience with Android is limited so I can’t really speak to that.

**** Shortcuts is an iPhone/iPad/Mac app (probably preloaded on your device) that can automate a set of actions for you. If you’ve never used shortcuts, check it out, and look at the gallery. I’d recommend you load a couple of those and play around with them some to see how the actual programming works. When you are in the shortcut app, you’ll see a list of actual shortcuts. At the top right hand corner of the shortcut, there is a small circle with 3 horizontal dots in it. If you click that it will open up all of the code so that you can see and/or modify it. ****

I started first with a Shortcut. It gives a greeting, gives me a weather report and battery life. And reminds me about bringing a mask and to check my gas.

    Shortcut 1 Steps

    - Get the weather at the current location

    -Get the battery level

-Format the battery level to 0 decimal places

    -Create the TEXT

-Here you basically write out what you want it to say. You enter text and variables. Mine looks like this. I’ve put the variables in parenthesis:

Hey Jeff. Today is (Current Date), (Current Date.

Right now, its (Temperature) and (Condition).

There is a (Percent Chance)% of rain. The low for today is (Low) and the high is (High)…

Your iPhone battery is at (Formatted Number)%.....

    Do you need a mask?

    Do you need gas?

    -(Speak) Text

-after you create your text, go to each variable and touch to specify what you’re looking for.

-click the play button on the bottom toolbar to test it.

    Screenshots below:

    .

    9CE72116-6FA6-4A7B-A201-36A3B46BAE53.jpg

    .

I used Automations to trigger the shortcut below. To do this:

    -open the Shortcuts app

-choose Automation on the bottom toolbar

-touch the + at the top right of the screen

    -touch Create Personal Automation

    - Touch CarPlay

    - Then When CarPlay > Connects > Next > Add Action > Apps > Shortcuts > Run Shortcut > touch the grayed out word Shortcut and select the shortcut you created above.

    .
    D309B2E2-56BC-4354-84D4-F20A1DF40740.jpg

Now your shortcut will start when your iPhone connects to CarPlay. It may take 30 seconds or so before it plays.

After I ran this for a couple of days I decided it was too much, so I created a shorter version. To do this just long-press on your shortcut and touch duplicate when the menu pops up. Then modify however you like.

Then I thought, when I get in my truck for the first time in the morning, I’d maybe like to hear the long version. But when I get in / out several times during the day I don’t need all of that. So I created an automation that checks to see if I’ve driven that day. If not, it plays the long greeting. If I have already driven that day it plays the shorter version.

I’ll show how to do that in another post.

    Have fun!

For this one you’ll need to download Toolbox Pro from the App Store. It’s free. There is some premium content, but this one uses the free stuff.

    build another shortcut

When you go this route you would use this when CarPlay connects. It’ll check if run then will decide which greeting to play. Again in my case I have a long greeting for the first time of the day. Then a short greeting for each following.

What actually happens here is when you run it it creates a global variable with the current date. The global variable it creates is CarPlayRan. So when it runs again it checks to see if the global variable previously exists. Then I have another automation that runs at 11:59 pm daily. That one clears the global variable so that there is a clean slate for the next day.

    .

To clear the global variable each night run the automation I mentioned above.

I got mine working with zlink. Only thing is that the radio or Apple Music keeps playing. Any way to silence those while this is speaking?

    that’s awesome!

mine plays at the same time but it seems to lower the music volume a bit.

in iOS there is a command to pause and play media. I’m going to experiment with putting this command at both the beginning and end of the shortcut.

I think this will work. Put Pause right before the text command and Play after the Speak Text command

Just added those! I think it will work for Apple Music, but not sure about the radio. Will test a little later.

it should work for any media that is playing on your phone. Apple Music , Pandora, etc. But for the radio…. I don’t know - I doubt it.

Yup, worked for Apple Music. But not for radio. Definitely going to keep playing with this. I wish there was a way to search the actions instead of scrolling through all of them. Maybe there is and I’m just missing it.
