    Could use some guidance here. I’m about to take delivery of my 2022 platinum. Vehicle is at the port. I’m hearing about these waste gate actuator issues more frequently. Is this going to be a wide scale recall? If so I might pass and pick up something else. Any info would be a big help.

    It’s definitely an issue, but scope and scale seem to be a bit undetermined. I’ve only read one report of it on here (not saying that’s the only user here who has experienced it). Caveat emptor and all, but I’m not letting it stand in my way from picking mine up.

    Ya the only thing I’ve been worried about is the timeline on parts. From what I’ve heard Toyota is all over it but apparently trucks are having to go back with no estimated timeline for repair. Hopefully we get some clarity soon.

    I’ve read some stories that had the wastegate stuck closed/open issue, took the truck to the dealer, the dealer cleared the codes, and the codes never returned. So nothing was bad but maybe a sticky wastegate valve. The vehicle sweeps the wastegate at start up to check if the valve operates correctly. If the wastegate is actually stuck, the code would return immediately after clearing it. However I wouldn’t feel comfortable with that turbo long term but it might keep the truck out of the shop for some time.

    The 2022+ Facebook Tundra page has a lot of info on it (along with a poll of owners who have had issues and what Toyota is doing about it).
    It seems like Toyota (seemingly) has a handle on the problem…I read somewhere that they are aware of a bad batch of parts so inspection/replacement is happening for those who encounter it…

    so it’s a “take it to your dealer” situation if it happens and it goes from there.

    I've seen the FB group blow up with the same picture re-posted about 15x (the one with the Tundra body off the frame) talking about this issue.

    My gut feeling...emphasis on the "gut feeling" part...is that the FB group is making the problem seem more blown out of proportion than anything. I've read through dozens of posts talking about it and I can only track back to like 3-4 owners that have legit experienced this problem. I'm sure there are more trucks impacted than that, and I hope my truck doesn't develop the problem, but I don't know that it will end up being a model-wide recall. If it truly is limited to a "batch" then Toyota is pretty good about doing a targeted recall to truck owners who received the bad patch.

    I just hit 1,529 miles and I have not run into this. The highest milage truck that I've seen experience the wastegate issue was just over 1,000 miles.

    The only "issue" I've run into has been with the LTA sensor. I say "issue" because it really wasn't and was due to my own lack of knowledge. I noticed on several cold mornings, when I would leave for my commute, I would get the "LTA Senor Unavailable" warning. I was about to call my dealership until I realized it was frost on my window covering the sensor "lens" pointing out from the rear-view mirror area. I came from a 2012 4Runner and a 2005 Taco. Neither of which had any of these sensors, so I wasn't used to having to clean the frost off that high up on the window. Now that I do this, I haven't run into it again. Live & learn.

    On a total side note: :) Some of the folks on the FB Tundra group are pretty crazy. The group has also shown me that many people are new to truck ownership due to the 2022 Tundra. The FB groups are (my opinion) made up of 2 types of people: New truck owners who've never owned a full-size truck before or the rich people who join to brag how they've already dropped $5k in accessories on their new Limited or Platinum. I much more prefer interacting with the grizzled, truck veterans here on the Tundra forum.

    Facebook groups are easy to join and therefore attract any doofus that stumbles across them.

    I left all the F150 groups I was in because it was just obnoxious. Everyday consisted of the same 4 questions being asked.

    I stick to the forums for quality automotive talk.

    Hard to believe they need to pull the body off the frame to fix a waste gate. I haven't seen the turbos and exhaust routing up close, but c'mon. Really? OTOH maybe they made it easy to take the bodies off these things so they can replace the rusty frames that will appear in a few years, like on my Tacoma. Unless maybe they have hopefully improved the frame materials somewhat.

    My SR5 was effectively a DOA due to that. Very long arduous saga follows. Toyota is playing hardball and dealership is playing hero. The wastegate issue isn’t isolated

    It is crazy to pop the cab like that. However I just looked at one at the dealer and when I lifted the hood to take a peak, the hood doesn't seem tp lift very high and seems to not leave room to get to the back of the engine compartment.

    I wonder how hard it will be to change plugs!

    There should be no reason to lift a body just to get at a wastegate. I'd love to hear more about that picture.

    On my turbo car the wastegate is operated by vacuum and a solenoid that the ECU tells when to open. If Toyota used the same kind of setup it's likely faulty solenoids that aren't closing or the software is bad. I can't picture needing to lift the body for either.

    Now, take internet “news” as you will, but allegedly, the turbo / waste gate / manifold are being replaced as an assembly for those that have the issue. That could explain the body off of frame picture for repair if true.

    That is in-line with my saga. Toyota and their financial services division (I leased it) have both refused to assist in any reasonable resolution. The dealership stepped up in ways that are pretty much unheard of in this day and age.

    Removing the cab seems a go to for any moderately involved engine repair nowadays. If you take a peak in a the service area of a dealer who sells trucks, particularly the big 3 since they sell so many trucks, cab lift off's everywhere.

    I did have that…it’s with the vehicle at the dealership. It arrived in Vegas on the 17th of December and I want to tell you the build date was the 5th.

    If that's the case maybe its easier to pull the cab than the motor. I guess if Toyota is footing the bill the hours don't matter.

    Wonder if they do that to install headers too.

    Crazy. I took delivery of mine in Vegas on 12/15. Ours probably the same, or at least very similar, build dates. I'll have to keep an eye on mine. The build month on my door jam is November. (Knock on wood).

    Findlay was beyond good about this, though they seem about as disappointed in Toyota as I am. I had the SR5 with some unneeded goodies. They’re replacing it with a TRD Pro, same color (white) and eating it. This family have always been square with me but this goes above and beyond. I thought I loved that dealership before….

    That's awesome. I'm glad they're supporting you like that. I've used them a few times to service my 2012 Gen 4Runner (bought CPO in Florida in 2013) and I was impressed with them. They were my first call when I wanted to put a deposit on a Tundra, but they refused to go any lower on the ADM than $2k. So, I bought from AutoNation instead. It sounds like you're going to make out like a bandit in the end if you're going to end up with a Pro for the price of an SR5...minus some headache time, of course.

    I might end up giving them a call to see if they can order the OEM bed cover because of AutoNation can't right now.

    I shopped quite a few dealerships in an attempt secure a “meet or beat it” on the ADM. they were the lowest at that time and the AutoNation on west Sahara was several times Findlay’s. Curious how that happens.

    Yeah. Funny how that happens. When I called AutoNation, the sales manager I spoke to said "We never add ADM to sticker. We're transparent with pricing. The only thing you pay beyond MSRP & the Toyota destination charge is a $499.99 doc fee and a $400 tint package, but you can drop that if you want." Findlay had an ADM of $5k on of the doc fee and came down to $2k when I pressured them but wouldn't go below that.

    Oh well.

    This type of inconsistency is exactly why I hope...one glorious day...online dealers like Carvana or Vroom can start selling brand new vehicles. Transparent and consistent pricing for each & every single customer. This nickel & dime, he said/she said, different conversations with different answers is what makes the new car buying experience so cringy.

    Out in Pahrump and commute into Vegas daily for work. I know the feeling.

    Wow I’m so sorry man that’s awful. I’m sure somebody will chime in here about how it’s “Normal for redesigns”. Ridiculous. The main issue is that you’ll have to drive a Corolla or whatever for 3 months while making your truck payment. Hope they do the right thing here and identify the bad batch to avoid this being wide spread.

    The wastegate actuators are electronic. Ford's been doing this since at least 2017 and I imagine the Lexus GS500(or whatever this same engine is in) has been using them since 2017 as well. Diesels have had electric actuators since the early 2000's. They are super precise and fast and can control boost extremely well.

    The PCM also knows exactly what position the actuator is in which is one of the keys to this particular issue. The actuators are wired into the CANBUS and so the PCM can watch exactly where they are at. If it knows the actuator is not where its supposed to be it sets a code. I would imagine it might go to limp mode.

    Chances are these actuators are not made by Toyota. Hella makes a lot of the diesel units and I believe Borg Warner makes the Ford ones along with the turbos themselves.

    No manifold on the tundra. all they would do is unbolt the turbo from the head.

    My guess is if they don't actually know what the issue is yet, they might just replace the whole unit. The other issue is that the wastegate actuatators may need to be set correctly and its possible Toyota doesn't want a tech at the dealer attempting to do this. They might be wanting to just provide a complete turbo with factory adjustments

    Yeah. I don't think lifting the cab is incredibly difficult. I have heard of people doing it to replace the exhaust manifolds on a 1st gen Ecoboost. You can do it with the cab on but having it out of the way would make life a LOT easier.

    No different than replacing headers on a V8.
