It's actually not suprising, IIRC, Toyota said the V8's will be reserved for Lexus.

Sorry for those who bought the 3rd gen Tundra, this must be a kick in the nuts... right?

Jason's videos are great and he does make a fantastic point. However, cars are a heavy burden on anyone's wallet, youtubers are a horrible example of people making the change since they usually have the means to afford all of their crap. Believe you me, I'd love a 70 mpg equivalent small truck for my everyday, EV or FCEV or PHEV, doesnt matter. But then the v8 would also stay

 

I get that buying a new EV vs keeping your old gasser actually starts to save energy after driving the EV xx,000 miles. But, that’s only part of the equation. People are being conditioned into buying a new vehicle every few years. That’s not going to stop with EVs. Auto manufacturers are still going to roll out new features and try to get existing drivers to trade their vehicles in to keep them in a payment. And the energy consumption for steadily producing vehicles rolls on…

I’m the odd man out when it comes to how I buy and how long I keep my vehicles. I only know a couple other guys personally who keep their vehicles long term. It doesn’t matter how much battery range someone’s EV has; if that person trades their cars in every few years and drives 4-5 different vehicles in the same 15-year span that I only drive my v8 Tundra, I am the one with the smaller carbon footprint. But if you’re wheeling and dealing vehicles, yeah you’re gonna consume less energy if you get in on the EV thing.

 

Since 1993, the shortest my dad's kept a vehicle was 14 years, excluding the one he bought in 2019 (replacing a 16-year old vehicle).

 

You seem to be making the assumption that those 3-4 vehicles that person bought and got rid of get sent to the dump. I am pretty sure they probably get resold to someone with more financial sense than the original buyer since they are buying a 2-3 YO used car instead of a brand new one for 2x the cost. I've only ever bought one new car. And all the used cars i have sold went on to someone else to enjoy as the 3rd or 4th owner.

The ONLY vehicle I have bought new was my F150 and that was only because I was working sales in the Rocky Mountain states. I wanted something relatively new that I could be confident in and I knew had a good service history. Buying new is the best service history possible, and with the resale value on trucks, it made literally no sense to buy a lightly used truck instead of a brand new one with Ford's incentives. I might have saved $2-3000 by buying a 2-3 YO truck with 50k miles and almost no warranty left.

Honestly though, as a car enthusiast, I get bored relatively quickly. I am always looking around for what is next. Not because I hate whatever I am driving, but because I enjoy trying other vehicles. in general, the cars I buy don't depreciate much and so I can buy and sell them every few years and not take hits. I went from a 2006 Pontiac GTO to a Legacy GT Spec B to a diesel Jeep to an F150 and now to a Lexus GX and a 1995 4Runner. Thats in the span of 10 years. I am all over the board.

Its like trading Pokemon cards for adults.

My Tundra is the first new vehicle I’ve ever bought. I always bought used (well cared for vehicles 5+ years old) and drove them to 250k+. But we outgrew my 4Runner at 135k, and I had the same experience truck shopping that you did.

Of course the vehicles people flip are sold to someone else. Not every vehicle purchase is the result of a new vehicle being produced, and I didn’t claim that anywhere. But those people and their demand is a huge chunk of what drives the industry. Their demand supports a much larger carbon footprint than the guy who keeps a truck 10-15 years, even if they’re buying EVs and his old truck gets poor fuel economy.

I think if it were up to the manufacturers, everyone would be trading in every few years. And the more a truck becomes like an iPhone, the more that will be the case, as the “hardware” won’t keep up with the software updates. We’re already conditioned into doing it with phones and laptops.

 

If we all kept our trucks for 15 years would new sales really drop? I think the difference would be no one would wanna buy used anymore because all the used trucks are 15 years old and beat. So now you have a whole bunch of people buying new every 15 years instead of buying used cars more frequently.

 

People en masse keeping their vehicles for 15 years would require an economic catastrophe or some kind of other situation we wouldn’t want. I don’t think that will ever happen organically. But if it did, yes, I think new vehicle sales would fall. If cars didn’t change hands nearly as often and people maintained them for longer, then fewer cars would go to the crusher and fewer cars would be produced.

This could change with the increase cost of new/ used vehicles. As the cost rises, they owner will be more inclined to hold on to the vehicle longer.

 

My average vehicle ownership is around 8 months. I enjoy changing things up, and often. I can get away with it because my Registration, Title and Taxes is capped at $20. If I had to pay what others do for those things it would be a different story.

Honest question: do you not lose money on depreciation/tax/fees/financing interest paid? I always imagine when people say they “make money” flipping new cars within a year that they are fudging the actual numbers a bit.

One of my favorite things about Tennessee (besides no state income tax) is tags are a flat $79/yr.

 

I was on the fence with this until I saw the pictures of the wastegate failure repair on another thread. Holy shnikies! Complete Cab and frame separation to repair/replace?? Save the damn V8’s!!! I’m definitely saving mine.

 

Statistics are partial pictures. The piece missing here is there were 3+ years of significant recession years (2007-2010+) causing large purchases like autos to get postponed several years, impacting the numbers you see in the graph, THAT is why they numbers are skewed....

Depreciation was a thing a couple of years ago, but not lately. Even back then I considered depreciation/months ownership and figured that to be my "payment". Ex: sold a 4Runner for $1,000 below what I paid after 6 months ~ $167/month, which is pretty great. Insurance, gas, oil changes, tires are all things I don't really factor in as they are required wear items for any vehicle. Now, if I put $1,200 in new tires on a vehicle I would definitely add that to the selling price.

I'm usually doing this on 10-25 year old Toyota 4x4's which maintain value better than most vehicles. I haven't done this flip strategy on anything NEW until these upcoming Ford Maverick and Bronco's. I am counting on these new babies to appreciate in value in the short term, not because they are exceptional but because of the Covid supply chain issues.

 

I bet its not unless Toyota is up charging an insane amount for turbos. $900 for a pair of oem Ecoboost turbos straight from Ford.

And honestly, the Cab off thing is kinda suspicious. Unless they did something really whacky with engine placement, they should be able to do this through the wheel wells. I've removed and reinstalled one of my Ecoboost turbos in a few of hours in my garage with no lift and my shade-tree tools.

And this is even more suspicious because its a wastegate issue. The gate actuators are like 3 bolts and a c-clip to remove.

I kinda suspect that maybe Toyota corporate stepped in so they could inspect and make sure there was not a high level issue

 

The thing is they probably want the whole turbo to understand the actual problem in order to fix it long term. Is the actuator bad? Is the wastegate bad? I think the turbo can come out without removing the cab but it will be really tight.

 

Exactly. I don't know that this is common approach and is likely a result of Toyota trying to trace the issue.

Also I don't think lifting the cab is a big deal for a dealer. They are built to disconnect quickly.

 

This is pathetic lol. I could think many other more important things worth fighting for.

 

$8K for two turbos? Are the compressor housings solid gold?

Toyota must be proud. I guess I'll keep my F150 since I can buy and entire long block for that.

 

well that sucks. I see why Toyota people are obsessed with Reliabilty. If you have to replace a turbo you gotta remortgage the house

The last few weeks I did 8 @ 140 mile round trips with trailers hauling boxes, more boxes, lawn equipment, lawn art etc. I was glad to have the reliability of the Tundra towing in the snow and rain. The V8 worked well In Tow/haul mode. I know this was easy towing but still glad I had no problems. My 18 limited has only 25K miles.
