Toyota paid for my LED Pros

Hey all,

I haven’t posted my new member info yet but I wanted to share some very important information for those of you affected by the 2018-21 headlight recall.

I own a 2020 SR5 and replaced my halogens with
Pro LED’s which cost me $663.40 plus the harness from Ihacker (who is awesome and you should buy one from him).

Since there is currently not a “fix” available for the halogen lights (that could catch fire) I figured why not submit a claim on Toyotas website ( https://toyota.custhelp.com/app/ans...id-for-repairs-to-your-vehicle-for-a-specific)for reimbursement of my out of pocket repairs. I submitted my bill from the Toyota dealership that I bought my lights from, along with proof of purchase via CC statement, and an explanation of why Toyota should pay me for my troubles. I then waited for 6-8 weeks for a response.

Today I got a check in the mail from Toyota Motor Sales for $663.40!

So, if you have purchased aftermarket headlights for your recalled Tundra, I highly recommend doing what I did. Good luck.

*Burdturger posted the recall letter on p.3 and the wording states that reimbursement is possible if repairs were made prior to receiving the letter.

Sure. I simply stated that the current halogen headlights posed a potential risk to the health and safety of myself and my family as demonstrated by the recall. As a long time Toyota customer (2 Tacomas, 2 4Runners, 1 Tundra) I purchased a Toyota vehicle partly because of its safety and reliability.

Since the halogen headlight recall does not currently have an official “fix” I took steps to prevent the risk of harm/damage/loss by purchasing LED headlights which eliminate the risk of overheating/fire.

Since I had to come out of pocket to provide a solution (to a problem that should not exist), Toyota should reimburse me for my efforts.

So I can deduce from this that if I switched to oem pro led headlights with ihackers harness, that does indeed fix the problem completely? Or is there still a potential factory wiring harness issue?

I bought my lights way before the recall. Wonder if they will still buy that logic.

 

Was this only for '18+?

Switching to the LED headlights I believe still has the low beams and high beams on at the same time when switched to high beams. The consensus is the LEDs draw less current so the harness should not overheat.

where exactly did you submit this? customer service email?

 

It was acknowledged and I had a reference/reimbursement #

After my initial submission, they requested the CC statement as additional documentation then it went into pending for about 6 weeks. I did not look again after week 3-4 and kind of gave up to be honest but then the check arrived.

 

The problem occurs in halogens only so yes, problem solved with LEDs. It doesn’t hurt to try…(for reimbursement that is)

 

The recall is 18-21’s I believe, yes.

It’s just a request for reimbursement for fixing a recall issue out of pocket.

 

I want to believe this since why would Toyota pay you for your fix if they didn't think it actually fixed the problem.

 

I haven’t kept up on all this recall stuff, but did you buy your LEDs before the recall came out or after?

The LED swap was one of the first mods I did back in early 2021. Not sure if they’d consider it since I believe that was before the official recall came out.

 

If only they could expand it to 16s . I'm assuming the lows and highs aren't on at the same time with earlier years? Haven't looked at mine that closely.

 

What LED's did you order and from where?

 

I got the trd pro leds with the black surround from TRD shop when they were around 260 bucks each.

 

So mine is a 21 SR5 CM, went on the recall website and says mine does not have an active recall. (mine are halogen bulbs, that much I am sure)
I know it would be a gamble, but do you think buying the OEM TRD PRO LED lights and harness would make Toyota reimburse the cost?

 

If your not affected I wouldn't think they would but regardless the leds was one of the best upgrades I did.

 

I was actually in the dealership yesterday for an oil change and walked into the parts department to ask for the correct parts number on those TRD PRO LED lights. I will be changing them out, once I get whatever is sitting in my garage on first so my wife doesn't get too pissed.
I just wondered, because sounds like the recall was due to harness (#1) for the halogen bulbs (#2) so switching it out would be a logic and safety thing, but am thinking the reason I was not on the actual list would be it was a late year production? (got mine July, I think it rolled of San Antonio around June-ish if not a bit earlier.)

 

I wouldn't buy them from the dealer, they are usually very expensive. Try TRD shop, when I got mine they were 150 bucks cheaper a peice than the dealer.

 

Right, the TRD Shop or something like that. I believe dealer quoted me $460+ each, and told me straight up they will NOT install it for me because lack of harness... (sweet guy, so sweet....
TRD PRO Shop has a set/kit for $420 (LINK)however it says it does not have DRLs and will lose that function if installed into Platinum/1794 editions, but what of SR5? Or, am I looking at the wrong lights altogether?

 

Are those LED lights? They appear halogen in the photo to my eyes

 

I know, right? But that's the only one I can find that's a Tundra TRD PRO lights for 2014+
Dealer's part# was 81110-0C211 (passenger) and 81150-0C211 (driver)

 

You could always call Sparks and ask them to confirm part numbers
I wish my 07 had factory leds that cheap lol

 

Those are the 14-17 TRD Pro headlights, they're halogen with no running lights.

Ihackers thread has links to the headlights you're looking for, down below the installation guide. I've used two kits from him, he's the best. Highly recommend.
