I have had poor experiences at Beaman and Nashville Toyota North (simple dishonesty, casually dismissive when I caught them) and an absolutely shameful experience at Toyota of Cool Springs where the financing guy literally added money to the amount I was going to finance for no reason. I caught it as I was signing despite his attempts at misdirection, and he got a real concerned look on his face and made something up about a mistake my salesman must have made (rule #1–always blame someone else who isn’t present when you get caught being a dirtbag).

F— all of that noise. I hate that BS with every fiber of my being. I ended up buying my Tundra out of town. I’ll never deal with the three dealers in Nashville again, and I tell everyone I can about my experiences. Who knows if it makes a difference. Every one of them can’t go out of business fast enough as far as I’m concerned.

I would’ve walked out the minute John Doe couldn’t figure out the options. Unfortunately it’s the world we live in, dealers don’t have to compete for your business. It amazes me though in the age of online reviews and social media there still are douche bag dealers.

I bought my 2021 Tundra from Statesville Toyota near Charlotte. Did everything over the phone, took a quick test drive when I picked it up and was on my way in under 30 minutes.

Yeah. This was a total red flag for me when reading the original post. I've purchased Toyotas from 2 different dealerships before: Earl Stewart Toyota in Lake Park, FL and AutoNation Toyota in Las Vegas. Both experiences were top notch. My salesperson at each dealership knew their stuff and each were pretty tenured vets of the car industry. If I have to teach anything to a salesperson, unless it's a simple transaction, I'm out and I'll find someone else.

Hate the games. I go in with what I want to pay and a list of other dealers. When the games begin I begin dialing. As soon the salesman hears me say I’m on my way then things change real quick, if not then I say that’s a shame because I have cash on hand and this could have been sooo much easier. See ya. Best of luck to you, hope you are able to get what you want.

My local Toyota dealer can not order a vehicle to a customer specifications. They can take your order and then they wait until one like what you want is available. Some vehicles always come with a particular option and can not be ordered without it. For example, my daughter bought a Tacoma last year and the configuration she wanted was only available with the Toyota tonneau cover, which she did not want. For certain things, like a specific exhaust system, you are better off taking what comes in and having the right one swapped in at the dealer.

It’s hard for me to filter what it really means when someone says they had a great, quick experience at a dealership. If I just agreed to everything they tacked on at every step of the way, I’m sure I would’ve been in and out, too. It takes time to protest a $799 doc fee, $995 for nitrogen in the tires and two oil changes, $500 for floor mats, $500 for window vent shades, etc.

When people tell me they were in and out with no issues, I have to wonder if that’s because their dealer didn’t add any of the standard items to pad their profit, or did they just agree to it all and drive away?

I've bought two tundras from my local dealership and both experiences were fantastic. As for the service department they had a wonderful service manager for a number of years now it's an absolute s*** show. To schedule an oil change, purchased the lifetime oil change option, we had to wait 2 months. Forget them we are working on getting our money back for that option

Toyota of Orlando and Toyota of Clermont are the same, sales team just sucks. I walked out multiple times over the years as well. Last year getting my wife's Rav4 Hybrid, Clermont offered 12k for her car while Carmax offered 21k. They sat there arguing that their offer was better, should take it, etc. Have bought almost all but my first two Toyotas from Seminole. I skip the sales staff, talk to Sam Bunte the inventory manager. At this point I say I want X model at MSRP, get my offer from Carmax that they will match, and it's a done deal. Tundra I had to leverage relationship on as they are starting mark ups there. AutoNation is the only one around not doing any mark ups but their sales staff sucks too.

@Terndrerrr - When I say "I had a great, quick experience at a dealership", that's exactly what I mean - the dealer didn't add ANY of the standard items to pad their profit. I got exactly what I wanted, and nothing more. NOTHING extra was added onto my purchase. No document fees or none of that crap.

I will say that the reason the purchase was so quick was because I'd made a visit or two earlier to look at what I wanted, and made my decision before the purchase...but my '20 Tundra purchase took exactly 23 minutes. I know because I timed it. :)

Same here for me. I almost got screwed when a dealer quoted me a price and then at time of signing papers they added on freight ($1495). I had the quote from their website which stated freight was included in my quoted price. Sale Manager didn’t like it but they gave me the original price. It’s amazing what dealers will try to do to pad their profit. Fortunately for me, I’m all about the details, drives my wife nuts. But I figure paying attention to details saves me big $$$.

very good to learn these things. I will be looking thru all line items a few times before signing off on my truck purchase. Its sad to se ehow dealers and finance people are such cons.

I had a similar experience when trying to get my first Tacoma a few years back. I had initiated the purchase process through Costco, which I have done before, and I loved the process so much because it was "easy" and "no haggle". Well this rogue toyota dealership immediately started with the BS and attitudes etc that I walked out. Manager came running after me tried to stop me. I wrote about my experience and gave them a 1 star review and they came back and blamed me for their poor service

I imagine some of these guys are serious control freaks and they just can't handle a customer who knows what they want. Perhaps they can be good at sales by being high pressure but for me good customer service is where I'll do my business.

Sorry to hear about your experience. I just had a crappy one at the dealer I have been going to since 2009. The service center has always been great, and really friendly. Went to drop the Tundra off (express oil change line) and get a simple oil change (was -15f) that day. Nope, no openings, even with a drop off...and the guy was pretty gruff about it. I said no problems, I can leave it for a day or two. Very loudly he said NOPE, I can fit you into for an appointment on January 25. Left and went to another dealer (same group owner) 10 miles away and they called me 2 hours later to say it was done.

I put together a spec sheet based on the Build My Tundra tool online. Then I sent it to every Toyota dealership I was willing to drive to, covering 5 states. I received serious responses from only about a dozen dealerships. This was right before COVID. The VAST majority of dealerships only want easy sales with high markup. When you introduce actual competition, they just fall apart. My tactic got me about $10k off MSRP and no crappy add-on fees.

    Lots.
Buying a new automobile from a dealership has pretty much always sucked as a life experience, no matter which make or model. Add COVID to the equation and the current state of things everywhere and it can turn into a cluster*#$@ really fast.

The best advice is to do your homework before you ever walk into any dealership, know exactly what you want, what the price SHOULD be for that vehicle, how much you can afford to pay and have that money in hand or pre-approved by your credit union or bank. If you are financing and the dealership can beat your prearranged loan then consider it. If you are trading in a vehicle know its KBB value or general worth, and what you will realistically accept for it. Contact all the dealers within an area you are willing to travel to for the right deal. You can check out car buying services like TrueCar, AAA, Navy Federal, USAA, Costco, etc. to see if they can do better than what you can negotiate on your own. Be prepared to be disappointed in that regard, usually. Try to buy near the end of the month, quarter or year if possible, they do have sales quotas and marks they need to hit and this can sometimes present opportunities for vehicles in stock sitting on the lot. Pay attention to the small details, especially when dealing with the money guy at signing time, as this is where most of the sleight of hand occurs. There are some decent dealers out there and you can find what you are looking for if you are patient and diligent in your quest.

Automobile dealerships and every other retail sales outlet are in business to make a profit and they are very rarely going to take a loss (or break even) to make you or anyone else happy, you just have to eliminate dealing with the outright thieves. Most of these stories about demanding and getting outrageous discounts in ten minutes are most likely from the same type that NEVER pay retail for anything, ALWAYS win big at the casino, or saw Bigfoot on their last overlanding adventure.:)

I don’t gamble because I suck at it, I’ve never seen Bigfoot, but I buy vehicles on my terms not the dealers. It’s my money not theirs. I’ve walked out of more dealers than I can count. I had a deal over the phone on my latest vehicle with a dealer 90 miles away. When I got there they pulled some shit and wouldn’t honor the deal they gave me over the phone. I walked out. Dealers play shitty games because they can get away with it - most people don’t have the cojones to walk out and end up get bullied into a shitty deal.

This doesn’t mean I screw the dealer - it means I got a deal I thought was fair to me and the dealer all things considered.

So frustrating. The reps I’ve spoken with know virtually nothing about the truck and are about as motivated as a Best Buy employee working the cell accessories section. Wait until you actually put down your deposit…that’s when the real fun starts. Chasing them down for updates is the best. I’ve never had to work so hard to spend 65K. I will admit I did find an honest dealer who did not add a “Market adjustment”. If you’re in need of a referral let me know. Good luck!!

Yes, they exist to make a profit. All businesses do. But doing so by lying, being deceptive, adding markups after saying they wouldn’t, waiting until you drive X hours to change things up on you, making “mistakes” that always result in more profit for them, charging obscene amounts of money for simple additions ($1000 for nitrogen in the tires for example)—doing all that to you knowingly while trying to hide it from you (often successfully!) is not acceptable in any business transaction. Yet somehow we have been conditioned to expect this kind of behavior out of car dealers. I agree we need to eliminate the outright thieves. This would just leave very, very few dealers left.

In my opinion, the system is broken. Tesla is showing us that we can order direct, wait, and receive what we ordered. Just like when we buy anything else from anyone else in pretty much any other industry.

They’re who I bought our last 3 vehicles from, and I’ll buy our next one from them; but after reading all the reviews on the ‘22’s, I think I’m good with what I’ve got for quite a while.

Agreed, hence "you just have to eliminate dealing with the outright thieves".

True to some extent, but maybe an over generalization to make your point. I'm not a car dealer or any other form of retail salesman. I'm not defending Toyota or anybody else for any deceptive or predatory practices in selling anything. We live in a free market economy and most here would fervently defend that compared to the alternatives.

Vote with your feet, walk away from bad deals. I do, all the time. Order direct online, go to "no haggle" dealers if you think that works better for you, do whatever works to get the best deal. If you read my entire post it was meant to be an example of a rational approach as to how to try and avoid getting ripped off by a dealership and get the best deal for yourself, never how to give the most money away to a dealer or defend them in any way. What tickles me are these guys who ALWAYS get the best deals and dictate terms, or at least would have you believe they do.

I haven't had a single experience where a dealer didn't try to slip something past me. Every person I talk to has had experiences with dealers being generally slimy. Maybe it's anecdotal, but I think it's more likely that the system in place allows dishonest business practices (and outright thievery) to not only exist, but to thrive. It's the most well-known situation of being deceived and ripped off to everyone in our society.

And yes, I am voting with my feet. I can count the number of vehicles I've bought from a dealer on one hand and still have fingers left over. I've walked away from plenty of bad deals. Every single deal put in front of me (including the vehicles I did buy) required me calling out some kind of shitty sleight of hand where they were trying to pad their profit and sneak some kind of feature or fee past me. When I did buy the vehicle, it's because the dealer relented and didn't do the whole incredulity thing. I hate it, and I hate more that it's absolutely normal.

And this market, where manufacturers are legally not allowed to sell direct to consumers, where consumers who often know far more than the dealer and aren't allowed to bypass paying for his services–is this market actually free? Not sure I would say that it is.

To be clear, I've indeed seen that kind of crap from dealers...just not our Toyota dealer. In fact, wife had her last vehicle narrowed down to either a 2020 Mazda CX-9 or a 2020 Highlander...and it was the douchey salesman/sales manager @ the Mazda dealership, and crap he pulled/tried to pull, that tipped the scales in favor of the Highlander.
