Thanks for the review. The only that really gives me some pause is the wind noise. I've heard that from alot of people. My '05 has wind noise, enough so that often at highway speeds I'm checking to see if I have a window partially down. One of the big things I've looked forward to about buying a new truck is a quiet ride. The 2011 GMC Sierra I used to have was wonderfully quiet on the highway. Wind noise at 60 to 70mph on a brand new truck in 2022 is unacceptable to me. Did the Toyota engineers not test for this?

 

My radio comment - The truck will driven by others to go that don’t have a smart phone. We still use some company’s phones that are a step up from a brick due to the work environment. We would be replacing touch screens on a daily basis otherwise. Thus the comment for embedded navigation. Ya ya - dark ages. So when someone goes for a parts / pick up run it would be nice if radio was easily tuned for the driver that uses it occasionally and not familiar with the Toyota system. For myself I now have it set up to my iPhone and key fob. I do find it more “layered” to get to where I want to be. Such as display brightness and sound settings.

It had some issues reading text messages and got stuck on wanting to send messages. I just held the talk button down on the steering wheel and requested Siri to read my last messages. So I have both “Hey Toyota” and Siri to talk to.

 

Honestly I can’t even hear this fake engine noise. I wish I could turn it up lol mostly joking. I love how quiet these trucks are.

 

How do you use this feature? Is it a button? There’s so many buttons…

 

DAC is easy. You need the Off Road package to have it. Put the truck in 4H, pressed the DAC/CRAWL button beside the 4wd switch and turned the knob counter clockwise to the lowest speed. The truck did the rest. I did not have to touch the brakes. At the bottom of the hill I stopped and pressed the button again and away we go down the side road.

I do like the brake pedal feel on this 2022. It feels higher than the old Tundra and less force is required to stop it.

 

Oh gotcha. I forgot that features not a 2h feature.

 

Any idea what this screen means when trying to use multi terrain select?

 

Seems like a generic warning to remind you what switches off when you use MTS.

 

Yeah usually when you select those terrain modes it disables parking sensors and other collision alerts

 

Interesting. If I use the sand mode it goes away. But in the other 3 it stays on the screen. I guess if I hit ok maybe it would go away.. thanks

 

Good to hear - too bad I went with the Sport model. It should be in around March apparently (on Vancouver Island) but I'm sure hoping one comes in for me to test drive before then as I'm not buying a truck sight-unseen. Wish we got the same options as our US friends but the packages are pretty limited. That said the Sport I've ordered comes with more than similar-priced other brands. I'm going from a 2013 Ram 4x4 Sport with the HEMI so sure curious to see the difference.

Oh, and subscriptions in a truck are B***sh*t.

 

Those sport trims are nice though. The color matched fender and grille trim makes it so much nicer

 

I havent driven it enough to say. I work from home and I seldom go anywhere. I doubt I put more than 20 miles per month on my vehicle.

 

Yeah I like it, just hoping I like the whole thing. Might as well trade in my truck to bump up while I can still get something for it. I went sport as I'm not really an off-road guy - up logging roads for some fun sometimes but nothing crazy.

 

Its funny he thinks I have kept one for 4 months...

 

I played with the DAC cool feature. How do you get the crawl control for going up hill to work? When I’m going up hill it doesn’t crawl me up hill with the same controls on.

 

I think CRAWL needs 4L. I just tried the rear diff lock in 4L. Two wheel rooster tail of snow all the way up my driveway. Love it! Add that to my Like List.

Later today I will try the CRAWL.

 

Couple more updates….

Like: First tank of gas 747km used 104.2 litres of gas. That’s 13.95 l/100km. Old Tundras would be around 16.5 l/100 in current weather. It has been below freezing all week.

Like: It’s snowing again (duh it’s Canada). The temperature was warm enough for the snow to start sticking to the front of the truck. Old Tundra would start beeping and you have to turn the sensor off. Now it tells you without beeping.

Dislike. And this is a BIG DISLIKE !!! Tonight I drove in dark conditions. Buddy behind me was on my ass. And I was wondering why the mirror wasn’t automatically dimming like my last 4 Tundra Off Road trucks. Because…. it has a cheapo mirror with a flip on the bottom. Like the cars in the 1970’s. Same cars from the 70’s that used the radiators to cool the transmission.

Toyota - are you frickin kidding me?? Spent $60k ++ (Canadian) on a truck and you can’t include an auto dimming rear view mirror!!!! I checked the web and it’s included on SR5 and OffRoad package with 5.5 bed. Not on the truck with the same package that you spend the extra money for the extra foot (6.5 box). Unbelievable.

And for those Canadians who ordered a TRD Sport you are getting the same surprise.

I wasn’t expecting the Toyota Accountants to start removing grab handles, transmission coolers, rear door storage, sunglasses holders, and all the other stuff you removed last time round until the mid model change / updates.

This stunt really rubs me the wrong way.

 

The one week update:

Dislike: Cannot remote start the truck when it is loaded. I have started another thread on that topic.

Dislike: Bed lights don’t turn off for 20 minutes if you have the tailgate down. Yes you can turn the switch to “off”. It won’t turn off on an double push of the fob lock.

Dislike: Box liner is like an air hockey table. Slippery is an understatement. Rubber mat is ordered.

Dislike: The radio. Back to my original comment that I like a radio to be a radio. When I am driving I get blue screens of “communication error”. And other screens (while driving) with scan codes to open an account (I have an account from the day of delivery). I would be happy with a radio that can handle the basic AM and FM.



Engine: Now at 1200kms. I’m still on the fence on V6 twin turbos. It is not as smooth when idling compared to the V8 - makes sense as a V6 is not perfectly balanced.

There are videos of guys drag racing the new truck. They are also on the brakes spooling up the turbos before the flag drops. Here is real world - I go to pass a truck on a two lane highway, transmission drops a couple gears smoothly and you have a second and a half to think “is this it for power? uh-oh”. Once it spools up away it goes - and it GOES! Don’t like that feeling compared to the old 5.7

My summary: it’s a really nice SUV. Yet I really expected to get a truck. I figure Toyota’s target market is people that use it for a commuter vehicle and pull a trailer to go camping / boating / etc a few times a year. As long as you can close the tailgate for what you are hauling (like a SUV) you will like it.

As for as being a work truck - no. Get a 2021.

For what I am using it for it’s fine. I’m hauling something in the box 2 or 3 times a week. I will not be using as much for the bigger / longer loads I did in the past - I will hop in the old 3/4 ton for those runs now.

 

Tundra is an enthusiast truck if you need a work truck get one from the big 3

I am now at 320 Miles. I still love it, just a few minor gripes. Here are a few updates:
I would like to see the following things.
Make it to where the Auto hold will remember last state, I like having it, but I hate having to turn it on every time.
Tilting mirrors. It would be nice to have an option to have both mirrors tilt when put into reverse. As it is now, you have to have the mirror adjust switch to the right or left to have that mirror tilt. Why not have it set to in the center will tilt both, or do it like Dodge and Ford does and have it an option in the radio system screen to toggle on/ off?
Interior lighting. We need something! It is dark in there at night. I understand having the panoramic roof it is difficult to place a light in the center, but the lights that are in it should be able to light up the interior.
Exterior lighting. Again, we need something here! All you get upon the unlock button is the front lights. We need some puddle lamps at the minimum.
Accessories. This will fix itself in time, but its near impossible to find side steps, bed cover, window vent visor, etc.
The one thing that really bugs me is the engine shutting off when the doors are opened when remote started. Super annoying. No other manufacturer (that has remote start) shuts off when doors are open.

 

This. One of the most annoying things when having a push button ignition Toyota. Happens in my 4Runner too. Old 2015 tundra with regular key doesn’t shut off when opening door. Supposedly it’s a safety future so someone can’t just hop in your car and go. Sounds like Toyota needs to hire someone to redo some software upgrades like other manufacturers to keep the car running with push button ignition.

 

There's no easy way to just hop into someone's remotely started Toyota vehicle. The doors remain locked after remote start. Without a proximity key, they'd have to break the window, open the door from inside handle, get in and drive off.

 

Last I checked, the GMs still do this too.

 

Yeah. That’s why it’s the lock button to remote start. But I’m sure Toyota just trying to cover their ass in case there was a situation where someone or something presses the unlock button (kids playing with keys or accidentally press unlock.) but it’s just Toyota being lazy with their programming. Most other manufacturers have a remote start mode and if no fob present, the car will shut off if you try to put in drive or press the ignition button. I work on Chrysler, Chevy, Ford, Nissan and it’s basically standard now.

 

Leave the tailgate down and try to remote start it. It won’t start.

 

On the Chevy, ford and dodge, after being remote started, you have to still push the start button to be able to drive. You can’t do that without the key fob. So I don’t see it as a security issues at all.
