Never seen anyone set their cutting brakes up like this. Interesting.

Keep us posted how you like them on your desert bomber.

What is a cutting brake?? Never have heard of or seen one before now? Very cool that you can do all that though!!:)

Found out what it is,, I suppose I might have to see one in action???

We need more context to understand why you’re doing this? If this were a drag setup, I would understand. But nobody is running down the strip routinely with King shocks. So that’s not what’s going on.

In off road, it allows the vehicle to drift to the left or right. Cutting brakes lock up the left or right rear wheel
It can also aid in traction by locking the wheel that is spinning when that wheel is suspended in the air. The power is then transferred to the other wheel.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lvze-dtAbhU

This is just one of the applications.

It's the same thing as drift cars have, pull the handle to lock up the rear and get it to slide or if you have front dig you can drag the rear to pivot around easier. I wouldn't call his setup cutting brakes necessarily, cutting brakes usually mean independent lockup (like brake the back left to turn tighter to the left, not both at the same time), though all that's missing is the extra plumbing and another lever to engage that. Some vehicles like comp crawlers even have cutting brakes for the front, so you can have just the front right or the back left or any combination lock up so you can maneuver tighter or manually direct power.

I think it's dope. I have that same handle for my buggy! But I was going to plumb it inline with the stock brakes since I'm lazy, the dual calipers is the fancy way to go though.

So for re running in the desert there are lots of tight turns this cutting brake / hand brake allows me to stop both back wheels and pitch the truck into a drift left or right at speed to get around the tight turns

I was going to do it inline but the abs in our trucks suck and would most likely throw a code on the dash independently plumbed the truck doesn’t know it’s there

The only thing I would worry about is the electronic LSD possibly interfering when it detects one wheel spinning and the other not and limiting engine power or braking the spinning wheel to compensate. FWIW, I ran new lines and bypassed the ABS on my 2012 Tacoma and didn't get any error codes.

Removing the ABS 1 fuse solves all of this. It kills traction control and ABS 100%.

Do not use the truck on public roads with the ABS 1 fuse pulled.

@TTracer what year is yours? I can see it’s at least a 2014. Our 2014 enters ice mode way too easily when it’s upset at high speed off road. That’s what led me to searching for how to disable traction control completely. On hardback or washboard, trying to brake from high speed just confuses the abs module and it seems to assume you’re on ice. The brake pedal goes solid and you get about 10% brake power. The abs 1 fuse pull gets rid of that and keeps me from killing myself or friends by overshooting a braking zone.

    Nice hoon handle execution. :burnrubber:

ya I wired a 60 amp relay to the abs and put it on a switch for off road makes it easy to turn everything off

Oooooh I likey! With a hand brake like that I'd be able to make super sharp turns like on switchbacks - on dirt trails of course. Check out Trail Mater starting at 4:19 on this video. He brakes the rear, then uses his front lockers to pivot the truck.

does the relay reset with ignition cycles or do you have to turn it back on manually? I thought about just putting a momentary switch in-line with the fuse. It only takes a momentary disruption for the system to fail and requires an ignition cycle to re-run the self test and turn back on.

Dang! I wish I would have know this early. I have been dealing with almost dying from ABS while offroading for years. Is there any risk of an airbag going off during this process? Idk why, but someone told me that.

    Not sure at this point.
All I’ve got to say is that looks freaking sweet to have a usable hand brake in those situations. Definitely for the deserts and sending it!!!
