Roof Rack/Basket options for a Doublecab

I'd like to one day add a roof rack or basket on my double cab,with out breaking the bank. Whats are my options?
I have not seen many 1st Gen Tundras with them.

 

Great question. I've wondered the same. I also want to know how they are attached.How does the drilling not leak or rust? So many questions.

Tagging a few guys with baskets.

 

Self tapping screws and flexible adhesive work wonders. One just needs to pick the proper spots to tap. Pump fill the holes and load threads and backside of fastener heads. Wipe clean. Should be good as long as you don’t exceed weight limits on racks.

I'm ok with drilling and tapping a hole and making it not leak. I have machine shop experience and used to work at a Ford dealership.

I have not pealed back my trim on the roof yet to see if there are any factory mounting points,like for a factory rack option that I can use to mount a rack if I get one.

And I really don't want to spend 300-400 for a roof basket. I can't believe the price on some of them.

 

Look around on your local cregslisss for some options. I peruse there sometimes for tools/Tundra prices and have looked quite a bit at racks. There is always someone getting rid off racks due to never using them or selling the car. Trouble is the time and effort to go look and do a deal with strangers. $300-400 doesn’t sound all that bad for brand new shipped to the house. I’ve seen some systems going for $1k plus new!

The 02’ didn’t have any pre-mount holes in the roof trim that I could see before I caulked those down for good.

Trick is finding ones that fit exact, but that doesn’t sound like a problem for you with your experience. I know I could make something happen regardless if the fitment/look was close to desirable. Customization is the fun part.

 

Cheapest and easiest way to go would be Yakima Q towers, crossbars and then a basket attached.

 

There is a guy who makes roof racks for access cabs, and is supposed to be developing a double cab version at some point, just not sure when that is. Jose Wong is his name if you're on Facebook.

 

I second that. I've never heard anything bad about Yakima.

Rola makes a decent basket for half the price of a Thule or Yakima. I’ve had one on top of my 03 tundra for 5 years now, still in great shape.

 

I'm thinking about buying the right size basket for my truck and making my own mount system.
How I'm mounting it to the truck is something I'm still looking into. Id like to get the basket first and go from there.

Sorry that this is an old thread…looking for a decent price on a way to have a roof rack installed on my truck. I often need more storage space. 2006 double cab seems impossible to find a rack for and a no drill application would be best. Looked at the suction cup style but those don’t look that sturdy to me. Any ideas?

 

Magnets? I've got 4 of these on top of the corolla for the light bar mount. I thought I had a post about that, but I can't seem to find it now...

What @Casper421 said. Inno is another no-drill cross bar brand that has an option for our trucks, made in Japan and good quality. Pick your own basket to go on top.

This is a great idea for a lightbar! Not so sure it’d work on a roof rack but still…I might have to use this as an excuse to get more lights.

I would have gone this route but I couldn’t find a Yakima Q tower that would fit my truck.

 

Unfortunately, he died while testing his magnet fixed rack by riding in it when his wife who was driving saw a squirrel and hit the brakes.

 

I went with Inno and has worked out well for kayaks.

 

I had an uncle who went out that way. It's more common than people realize. Those god damned squirrels... those GOD... DAMNED... SQUIRRELS. That uncle owed me $500 too and I'll never see it again.

 

Squirrels are no joke...be warned everyone. Please.

 

This is a good thread to bring back. I would tear most racks off in parking, but it's good all around for best gen.

 

One time I wanted a Prinsu Rack for my double cab, then I remembered I have a 6’ bed.

 

When I lived in Canoga Park the squirrels ran the apartment complex. They would bark at you like a dog. They were mean bastards. They stole the hamburger buns off my porch while I was grabbing more beer from my kitchen. The BBQ was going and they didn't care a bit. Tipped the plate over onto my tile floor, that part was intentional.
