38 Gal tank experiences....

Not sure where in Cali you are, but I am in socal and i buy gas from Sinclair and pay about .80 cents less than any other station. This is combined with their Dinopay app. Last fill up yesterday was 3.75 a gallon and the Mobil station 30 yards away was 4.50.

 

Paid 3.24 today. Costco VT

 

I'm in slo county Morro Bay Mobil is the cheapest but every body else around here is paying 4.50 and beyond but what do you expect when people vote them selves tax hikes

 

These gas prices are killing me.
Two fill ups about a year apart at the same CostCo and only 3 gallons difference.

 

inflation hits hard. We all can speculate on what's the cause, but gas price hikes hits' hardest on those with tight budgets.

 

I just bought a Tundra with 38 gallon tank. Read the first few posts from a few years ago. That is really disappointing that the 38 gallon tank useable amount is only 31 gallons. I read here it’s for two reasons, 1. Long tank so in case you’re on an incline, 2. Need to cool the fuel pump.
These don’t make sense to me. I have a hard time believing the fuel pump in 26 gal tanks is any different, and there is no way 8 gals reserve is needed for those. 8 gals is 20%, I’d be willing to bet the light comes on a 8 but in realty there is margin built in and you can get it down to 10%, so 34 useable. We’ll see still on the dealers first fill up.

 

If I still had quarter tank. How many gallons does the tank hold. Lmfao

 

How many miles does your trip computer say you have until empty after filling up?

mine is always 409.

it’s weird because my Titans had a much smaller tank and it was 412 miles to empty upon a fill up. I thought I was going to get to drive like 600+ with this 38/31 galling tank. Whoops!

 

It varies. I drove off with 475 and got to 472 when I got home (2 ish mile drive) I've seen it at 485 on a road trip with 85 Octane gas. This fill up was 87 octane. (No we won't discuss what octane is better)

 

I have a 21 and never done anything but 87. Wow. Wonder why it varies so much. I mean sure a couple here and there but 65+???!

Mine is usually between 480 and 505 miles after a fill up. Avg eco says 15.8 - 16.5 mpg depending on my travels that week. Most I’ve ever filled up was at 20 miles to empty (no light ever came on though?) and it took 28.7 gallons I think. I was towing the travel trailer on that tank and averaged 11.7 mpg.

 

Some are averaging 15.5 mpg while your avg is probably around 13.5 (kinda like mine right now - all city driving) and if you use the logic already explained that the gas light comes on and you still have around 8 gal remaining then that means you used 30 gal of gas:
30 X 15.5 = 465 to empty
30 X 13.5 = 405 to empty

I do mostly highway driving. 40k mikes on a 12 month old truck and I average 13.9 mpg. And i don’t floor it. Sad.

 

I get 18 mpg highway.

 

me too at 65mph. But I’m all stock suspension wheels and drivetrain. Most mods that are common, lifts, upsize wheels or tires etc. all hurt mileage. Even swapping from the factory tire to a same size all terrain can double the weight of the tire. Even small level/Lifts are aerodynamic killers.

 

Yea I do have bigger tires. 295/75/18. That’s probably it. Luckily, my work pays for my gas.

 

And your Pro is leveled, which makes it a bit less aerodynamic.

 

Interesting thing happened today. I was just talking in another thread about how I can never get more than 32 gallons in my 38 gallon tank when filling up from empty (because of all the speculative reasons already listed in this thread) and then this happened:



554 miles! I’ve never seen it that high. Usually it reads around 460 after a fill up. So either my fuel mileage is suddenly really great right now, or the truck actually took the full amount. Average mpg is around 14, by the way. Unfortunately I filled it up from half a tank and wasn’t paying attention to how many gallons I added. Interesting.

Was filling up today, low fuel light had been on for a few miles. Wasnt paying attention after the first few minutes...then heard fuel going up the filler tube annnnnd out it came. Luckily the pump was slowing down. Thought it was weird that the shutoff in the handle failed but still slowed the flow until I saw the price...$99.70. Pump limit is $100 so by coincidence just as it started overflowing the pump was slowing down. Avoided a big mess but I was still pissed! Got 31.X gallons in

 

I've driven my 2017 so low (HIGHLY NOT RECOMMENDED!) that it took 37.2 gallons on the fill up.. that was just over 600 miles on the tank (I was driving through a desolate area of Texas with no gas stations).

The low fuel dummy light comes on with 8 gallons left, Toyota is covering their butt's with the range of miles left so people don't try to run the tank completely empty which will cause the fuel pump to run hot & potentially seize.

 

My 38 gallon tank rarely takes more than 25 gallons when I fill up, but that's probably because I live in So Cal and I'm always waiting for the next natural disaster to shut down everything. Gotta keep her full of getaway juice!

I had the same concern when I bought my 17 Platinum CC. Taking it to where the display states 0 miles left, you still have around 8 gallons or so left. A reserve they called it. I thought that was crazy considering the size of the 'reserve' but it is what it is.

 

FWIW as another data point — Drove about 20miles past the yellow light and the zero miles range, mostly to test it after getting regeared. Put in 32.051 gals on Monday. Total of 444 miles on tank (adjusted for tire size). Figure I had 3 reliable gallons left maybe more. This included 40 miles off road where the lie-o-meter, which is actually pretty accurate, said I was getting about 8-9 mph. The rest was mixed city/highway about 30/70 split.
