    Well, that’s slightly better than my 1st gen Ridgeline economy, maybe equal too if I slowed down ;), so for me that’s a plus. Winter tires, gas & driving style included maybe even better!

    the 1st gen Ridgeline has a great engine. I used it loaded down all the time and got 12.5 - 13.5 liters/100kms - 2 hours drives back and forth to Haliburton.
    My 2.5 gen Tundra with the 5.7 loafs along and it gets the same mileage as the Ridgeline when used for this purpose.
    Unbelieveable level of reserve power in comparison.
    My sons 4runner and he drives spirited gets 11.5 -12 liters / 100kms. with the 4.0 liter engine.
    So I am not impressed with 13-14 liters / 100 kms.
    From reports I have seen,
    I am pretty sure the way I would use it loaded down going up hills I would get no better than the 13.5 and up liters/100 kms and up.
    Its a damn heavy truck much heavier than a Ridgeline and it would be on boost alot.
    My truck is not used as a grocery getter, and idling in traffic.

    the active front air dam is large and was designed at speeds it deploys at to work with the factory tire/wheels for mileage. See how low to the ground it is.
    If you have raised the truck with new tires/wheels you can be sure the air dam is not working as designed at those speeds and to the negative now, along with the rolling resistance from the new tires.

    I got my 22 about three weeks ago and I’ve averaged 19 mpg with mixed driving. That includes warming up the truck for 5-10 min every morning. This last tank was about 17.5 mpg with lots of wind from the cold front we got here in Texas last week. That’s typical for a turbo charged vehicle in my past experiences

    Who the hell only drives 60 to 65 mph on a highway?

    Where I live even rural two lane highways are 65 mph, but everyone drives 70 mph. Divided highways are posted at 70 mph or 80 mph.

    Where I live free ways are 65 and highways are 55-60 and I like to cruise and milk gas mileage. I’m currently getting around 21.5 going 60 at freezing temps.

    The "eco" effect is from driving around in a smaller engine setup, typically less cylinders. The "boost" effect is adding more air so you can burn MORE fuel to make more power when you need it. If your boosting, your not saving gas.

    Cruising down the highway at 1200 rpms really helps. I can’t do that in my other 6 cylinder .

    Boost will be basically zero at those RPMs. So efficient cruising.

    They are doing nothing at that RPM. Not the point of turbos.

    If you took the turbos off of the 3.5 it would get better gas mileage. But the power output would suffer greatly and make it unusable for a vehicle that is supposed to tow 11,000 pounds. The point of the 3.5TT is to get the best(ish) of both worlds. Smaller engine efficiency during some driving conditions like around town and highway cruising, but big engine power when you need it. Power is burnt fuel period. Trucks don't make power without it. If you wanna make power, it comes from converting the potential energy in the fuel into mechanical energy to twist the crank. Most gas engine trucks get similar MPG while towing these days because the engineering / efficiency is all very similar and that's how much energy it takes to move a big truck and a heavy trailer.

    To add to the downsized turbo engine discussion, one of the big problems with the Ford ecoboost when it first came out was that it needed to enrich the air/fuel mixture under heavy boost to keep temperatures down. I don’t know if the latest gen engines fixed that issue. So even though more boost equals more fuel, the Ford ecoboost would use even more fuel than necessary just to keep engine temps down. Hopefully Toyota designed a good engine that doesn’t enrich under heavy boost conditions.

    Enriching the air fuel ratio to keep temperatures down in the combustion chamber is something all forced induction gasoline engines are going to do. The V35A-FTS is probably not going to be an exception.

    maintaining mileage is not the top priority if we are getting this Tundra to put bigger tires on. I had to chuckle just a little at one of the comments that says "Toyota knew about this when they put such small tires on this truck"
    Same applies to the Gen 2.5.

    I will add my son bought a used midsize pickup years ago that came with massive tires because the previous owner lived in a town on the on west side of a lake north of us. His work was in a town on the east side. In winter it freezes and people make roads across. So he drove across the lake and saved 30 minutes travel time. Anyway the tires were replaced shortly after he bought and sold.

    Right - TRD Offroad Package. I am curious if anywhere on the invoice Toyota shows a "Air Dam Delete" ?

    I assume the cost for the Air Dam reduces the overall price, as the TRD OR Package removes it? Be nice if they gave you something in exchange - (like tow hooks with the TRD OR). Makes sense, no?
    In the tug of war between the designers and engineers and those that push for traditional truck (stuff) ...somebody wins out.

    There's always a hit to your MPGs when going with bigger tires. I saw that video and I think he said it's his first 4x4 and he came from a corolla so it was more surprising to him. I had a 2019 Tundra that averaged 11 mpg so I'm still happy with what I got hahha

    So if you turn the truck off and then immediately hold the right steering wheel stalk up - the air dam should drop like in the picture for access under there.
    My understanding someone correct me if I am wrong.

    I was looking into the stock falken wild peaks at that came on my limited off road and they are a E rated tire and look to be the same weight as the ko2’s of the same size. He must have gone from the street all weather tires to a really heavy tire?

    Yes they are. Unless you have datalogged MAP, TIP, Throttle angle and engine load, it might not be obvious, but I can almost guarantee that the turbos are spinning quite fast and are producing boost even at low rpm and load. The compressors are spinning and producing the boost in the intake and then the throttle plate is used as fine control for what enters in the intake manifold. By running the truck at low RPM, with no vacuum or some boost they can entirely eliminate pumping losses.

    Turbines extract energy from waste heat in the exhaust that would otherwise fly out the tail pipe. They don't hurt in all situations. They only hurt when you are under heavy load and exhaust pressure builds too high or because the engine has to run rich due to excess heat.

    Ideally this would only occur under heavy load though. I can tell you that my 2014 3.5L Ecoboost does not go rich just cruising down the freeway with my travel trailer. i logged it coming back 12 hours from Glacier NP and got very familiar with the RPM and engine load it took to actually cause the AFR to dive. It has to be climbing a hill and be in a higher gear. I can force it to stay at stoich if I manually downshift the truck and spin a slightly higher RPM. Only on the biggest grades was I not able to keep it from going rich.

    Ford just doesnt tune the transmission in a way that keeps it lean. If they did, then you lose the whole benefit of having 4xx ft-lbs of torque at 2400 rpm. And honestly, I will take a hit in MPG's while climbing a hill with a trailer for that smooth quiet V6 vs having to listen to an NA V8 scream away at 4000+ rpm. The Tundra pulled 8100 lbs up the ike and spent a good portion of the way at 2400 rpm and only dropped to a measly 3100 rpm at the top.

    Sign me up for that.

    I was curious so I took some live data with my code reader. I drove at near 1500 rpm in 7th gear to get 1:1 ratio. Even accelerating with 24 psi of boost up a hill, lambda was near 1 so that means it’s not running rich.
