What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

How well do I need to pack these? I have them in a small box with adequate padding but not enough if they were headlights. Do I need to worry about accidental discharge? Or can I just trust that they are metal and fabric and relatively difficult to damage?

 

I think it's from how skinny the first gen Tacoma was. 4 doors stretches it out and it starts to look odd in my opinion. Newer Tacoma are wider and the proportions better for a second pair of full size doors.

As far as kids go there is a bit of a window for access cabs. Car seats are hard to fit back there, booster seat age through maybe 12 years of age is fine. From age 13 and on a double cab is much better, by 16 your kids won't wanna ride with you anyway.

Just single was mine which I’m sure yours are too. Unless you had two different plugs to the pretensioner.

I just did webbing replacement. It made it retract like new. I think the repair is only if it doesn’t retract at all or if it went through an accident and discharged.

I put them in a bit of padding but didn’t worry too much. You shouldn’t have any issue unless you are just tossing them in a refrigerator box lol.


What color did you go for?

 

I did color match.

I have the shipping label printed with priority cubic so if I add an outer box and re-print, I'm not sure if I exceed the dimensions. Hmm. I packed in two bubble envelopes and then wrapped with another big padded envelope but a drop from 6' could do some damage, or getting crushed as well. I'm waffling on this one, don't have a perfect bigger box. Maybe I'll re-print a shipping label and go by the UPS store and see if they have a slightly bigger box I could use to add some extra.

You should seriously think about descaling a lot of that rust on the frame and coating it with Chassis Saver or POR-15.

 

I honestly think that is packed well enough.

 

This is a ditto for me. Always have liked them, and the dash really made sense to me too. I feel like it's the perfect utilitarian truck, and real gas maven if you've got the 2.4L. Can't go wrong with a well-proportioned truck with lots of seat slide-back space, cab, space, that doesn't look like an SUV with a bed, sexy front end, nice curves, logical dash, and some comfort options. That's what drew me to my FGT.

 

I could be wrong, but i thought I heard the 2.4 L was not a great engine. Or is that the 2.0 L?

Depends on what you're looking for, I guess? If I wanted gas efficiency, the 2.4L is king of the three, you don't seem to gain a lot stepping up to the 2.7L, and for the MPG you get with it, you may as well bounce to the 3.4L V6.

May vary year to year? Really dunno. Just going on the little bit of poking around I'd done a while back.

 

I am six year second owner with a 2002 4WD 4.7L extended cab with 225K miles on it and was thinking about trading in on a 4Runner, living in a condo now. But when I saw insane used car prices, I decided to put money into the Tundra, it runs great anyway. Was hoping at one point to get an '05/'06 Limited with regular doors and 5 speed, but again, heck with those prices.

So, first thing I did was install the wood trim package in my brown/oak interior SR5 and that really improved the interior look. I mean real OEM parts from salvage - I lucked out and got from four different places in very nice condition. That after market vinyl laminate fake wood trim is cheapo looking. My original parts I can sell, in good condition, so the net cost was not huge.
Added LED lights in cabin as Freerider did, but I went with amber (old school ha).
Added LED turn signals, don't care about the resistance difference, let 'em blink fast ha.
Ripped out the HID aftermarket crapp lights with burnt out ballast (illegal anyway) and went back to regular bulbs. Will replace the headlight and turn signal assemblies soon.
Will wrap the steering wheel in leather next.
Picked up some original 4Runner alloy wheels to replace the aftermarket black wheels original installed 10 years ago.

"real work" upcoming will be total front end steering replacement / rip out entire exhaust from manifold on back
"hated work" upcoming is scraping rust and spraying with catalyist before recoating - yea, gonna farm that out, someone with a lift

 

Found a new TonnoPro trifold sitting on my porch today. Guess I need to install it now.

 

Got my rad from Amazon…the box looks fine and after pulling it out everything is good. Now to find time to get er done

 

Pretty accurate from all my years in 1st gen Tacos. 2.4 has a timing chain vs the 2.7 has a belt but thats biggest difference youll hear about. Mostly the split is that the 2.4l came exclusively in 5 lug trucks and the 2.7 is the 4cyl option for prerunners and 4wd.

Im pretty fond of my 2.4. itll get boost after I relocate this year but for now I have it running Efans, underdrive pulley, DT header, and a k&n (plus regear) Definitely woke it up a lot over the years fromm when I got it stock in 06. Never a single issue with it that wasnt just a simple worn out part (all after 100k miles)

 

Don't really think seatbelts are that delicate, think about what they're meant to survive.

But WTH - packing 101:

If it's small it's getting tossed into a canvas bag with a bunch of other small stuff, bag gets zipped shut & thrown onto a belt that leads to other belts & stainless slides & more belts & eventually rollers that come to a stop in a tractor trailer. (Lots of static electricity.) The canvas bag is about the size of a large Hefty Bag, so lots of small sized, lighter weight stuff in there too. Bag gets to truck & if you are lucky guy grabs bag & throws it against the ceiling, so it comes to rest atop walls of boxes. if you're only kinda lucky it gets shoved as filler between 2 walls of boxes. If you're unlucky bag gets tossed on the floor & idiot builds a wall of boxes on top of the bag - talk about building on a quicksand foundation. This time of year, there are lots of idiots.
If it's in a box (bigger than a small box) it gets thrown onto a belt that goes to stainless slides that go to other belts to more slides to eventually rollers into the back of a Tractor Trailer. Guy takes your box & adds it to the wall he's building. Maybe the bottom of the wall, maybe the middle, maybe the top - probably thrown up on top cause he can't reach up there. If he's finishing a layer of his wall, your box is used to lock that level - it gets jammed in, crushed enough to lock the wall. The softest, hollowest box is the one that crushes to make the 'locking' box fit.

Your stuff most likely travels in a tractor trailer. Think how wide & tall those trailers are. packed solid with boxes, as many as possible, packed as tightly as possible. (Think lots of weight shaking, bouncing & crushing.)

If it's precious or fragile - pack so it can support 10 feet of brake rotors piled on top of it. Strong box, lots of padding, outside box.
If it's not so fragile - throw it in a padded envelope.

Assume it's going to be walked on by Bubba, or if he's pissed off tonight - thrown hard. And kicked.
If you ship DHL, FedEx, UPS, USPS - you are shipping via mass shipping. It's a shape & a size in a 3D puzzle, the contents do not exist.
These services are not hand-held courier services. Do not pack like it will be hand carried by one guy from your door to its destination.

Finally - if you are shipping pyrotechnics, (air bags, explosive components of seat belts - those are Hazardous Materials. They must be declared & shipped from an authorized Hazardous Materials Shipper like a UPS Store. This gets into Federal laws & fines...

Lastly - always print 2 copies of your shipping label & put the 1st copy inside the box with the item, 2nd copy on the box. It's really quite amazing how many labels get damaged to the point of gone/illegible. Put a duplicate label inside the box/bag!

Man that's some good advice. Would have been especially helpful about 24h ago Next time I will slap the duplicate label inside. I actually had one, intending to double-box it. But the UPS lady said it looked good to her. It's nice and compact and no slippage so the only danger is via puncture wound I think. Unless those seatbelt cartridges are hazardous? I assume safetyrestore might have mentioned it if they were?

 

2.7? That’s the same block as the 2.4? It had a chain. The 3.4 has the belt

the big difference with the 2.4 vs 2.7 is the 2.7 has balance shafts (also chain driven)

 

The little ol 95 taco has been averaging 20-21mpg from the previous owners notes. The 3.4 can get good mileage if you stay 65mph most of the time

Nor can I. That’s why my tundras MPGS are trash. And the tacos too. Hell the Avalon is only getting 17mpg currently

I specifically asked if I needed to mark hazardous goods when I sent mine in and they said no. Not sure that’s entirely accurate though.

 

I fixed my fuel door lock today……. by getting a new key.
P.S.A…..Fuel door lock problems? Look at your key. I didn’t consider the key as the culprit because it worked fine in the ignition, but I didn’t realize how worn it was either. So…..
Walked into stealer with truck registration, drivers license, and $12.49, and walked out with a new key cut from my vin code (a trick I learned here, and a much better alternative to a copy of an already worn key). Lock now works like new. If you’ve already pounded a screwdriver into your lock cylinder to open your fuel door, then you’ll need more than just a new key, obviously.

Wow, I'm impressed. My first one was half hanging out of the box when I received it.

Still not sure why they didn't send it back unless they rely upon me to do it. Drain cock was broken off I believe.

The second one came in better condition but still had gaping holes in the box.

Those styrofoam blocks they use to keep it from the edge didn't even stay in place so obviously it's susceptible to damage.

 

Yeah, that's the first thing my locksmith did to get the fuel door open was to make a key.

Why didn't I think of that? Oh, well. After that he pulled the lock, took it apart and cleaned the crap out of it.

Haven't had a problem since then and I've owned my truck for almost 20 years coming up next month.

 

They really need to design vehicles today so that's the median where you receive the best gas mileage.

Mine would be 75, but's that's only because others here are going 80 mph+.
