Common Repair and Tool Needs (off-roading context)

Surprised I haven't seen anyone say Traction Boards.

 

Someone else did mention it above, but I agree definitely important to have. More of a recovery tool than a repair tool though.

In that same vein, a full size shovel is one of the tools I get the most use out of. The long handle is nice to have if you're buried deep and need to dig out the axles. If you're on a soft surface, you can dig under the tire to change it instead of jacking your truck as high. Use it to stir your campfire and for other stuff around camp. Options are endless. You'll get a lot more done with a big shovel compared to one of those cute 12" long folding tactical poop shovels.

 

Not to doubt you, but how sure are you on the 39mm? I seen some vids where they say 36mm, but those were on earlier 2.5 gens.

Traction boards are more for show IMO. I did use mine once, when I first started driving my 2.5 2WD. But for something lame I’m not likely to ever experience again. I’m giving mine away to a new driver since, in my experience, that’s who will most likely use and benefit from them.

The rest of us find a shovel more useful.

Cruzer is definitely the guy who’d know.

 

I’ve purchased cheapy CV axles on Amazon, I’ve purchased OEM CV axles from the junkyard sourced from 2010, 2012, and 2014s (yes, I’ve bought a lot) and they’ve all had 39mm axle nuts.

 

Would I consider myself a new driver? Lol I do get stuck tho

I won't say they are completely for show since my wood boards have come in handy a few times... but don't go driving in cinders thinking they'll save you there

 

You know, maybe if you’d spend a few hundred for colour-matched boards instead of making yours for $15, you’d have been able to self-rescue.

 

Traction boards are quite heavy (used to carry around 4) and take up a lot of space. I used them once at the dunes, so much easier just to get yanked out by someone.

Last year there was this idiot Jeep that was trying to make a u-turn on a narrow 2 lane road, up in the mountains, there was snow, there was ice, and he was stuck blocking everyone in both directions. They tried using traction boards but it would just get spit out. I asked every vehicle in front of me if it was ok to get around them, gave the Jeep a simple tug and traffic was flowing again.

There are times a traction board or several may be beneficial for more than traction and prevent breaking a CV shaft. Getting over obstacles doesn't always require a giant tire that multiplies the force on the drivetrain or a winch and skid plates. Take the the time to build a bridge or take the time to change the axle? I know, it's more fun to break things, but not always the most logical option. It all boils down to the right tool for the job at the time.

 

My buddy and I built a bridge one time. Scary as all get out, but had to do it. He's got the video or else I would have posted here. LOL

I am ashamed to say that I was this guy having this "unforeseen" problem recently. At least the spacer lift is now gone! Lesson learned.

Probably the most practical emergency "tool" of all listed in this thread. I would say this is not in the least bit stupid

 

I have a Dewalt Impact with sockets, CO2 tank (could probably run air tools too), pro-eagle jack, lots of wrenches, and quite a few 10mm.
