"Lubricate latches, hinges, and locks"

That's from the mainenance schedule. Curiously my wife's Subaru has that exact same line on the maintenance schedule.

Does anyone actually do that? Or is that just a "cover our ass" item for Toyota?

If you do: can you please share a list of which latches/hinges you lubricate, how, and with what? If you use some sort of grease: do you worry that dirt will stick to the grease and make it worse instead of better?

I haven't had to do the Tundra yet, but this is what I use for all my hinges and rollers etc..

$6 Permatex 80345 White Lithium Grease, 1.5 oz.

Door locks with graphite. No one use them till their fob battery dies and then they don't work.

 

Do you just spray it in there or is there some technique involved?

 

Is there a difference between that and regular grease for this application?

 

Eezox is your friend!!!
Spray all your hinges and latch mechanisms with it.
Then spray a bit on your key and insert it into the locks.
I also spray down my suspension components with it before my off-roading trips.

Correct, but Eezox does not smell like a combination of nasty feet and licorice!
Used to use balistol even with the smell but found Eezox and prefer it because it does not stink and it dries better and does not pick up as much dirt and grime.

 

I put powdered graphite on the key and insert in and out. I was able to get a lock on my 04' working again that way.

 

Ditto on the litho grease for hinges for my olde '02... No problems with dirt, cleaned it all first with some WD40 and wipedown.

 

I used to use fluid film and/or white lithium grease but found that looked nasty quickly and built up all sorts of crud which tweaked my ocd and also gummed stuff up (ie the tailgate latches). I switched to teflon based dry lube a few years back, sprays on and the propellent/carrier fluid evaporates leaving the dry lube and binder behind. Everything stays nice and clean, no thickening in cold weather and functions well even in very cold temps. Personally I’d never go back to a grease or oil based lube now. Quick lap around the truck while the oil is draining at each fluid change and right by the garage fridge too- win-win.

Gave it away on the gun forum I used to frequent.
The Froglube I tried smelled better..

To anyone reading this, go ahead and lube your house door locks and hinges..

This is an aspect of vehicle maintenance I need to get better at.

Especially on older trucks, cleaning and lubricating moving parts makes a difference.

Climate control cables, window tracks,you can take apart doors or tailgate and hit the clips for door rods.

 

I did my hinges with this. For door locks I use a good silicone but they say this stuff is good for that too. On the sunroof a dry lubricant. Honda Shin Etsu grease for the rubber seals, sometimes good old 303

Where are the climate control cables? Are they hard to get to?

 

I'm in the wrong section, sorry, I have a different truck. But there are moving parts behind my dash that manually control the climate control system and the amount of heat the system gets. I guess my point was more the little things that you wouldn't think of in your truck that move.

I am new here and actually don't have a Tundra (even though I find it a very tempting truck), but I still wished to add my thoughts.
I have a 2018 Hyundai and the service schedule DOES include lubricating hinges as well.
I maintain my car (s) meticulously, after confirming with the dealership not to lose warranty I do my own oil changes as well. Every once in a while, when the service schedule calls for bigger services (400+ CAD by the way), I take it to dealerships to get it done so I can prove the car is indeed being maintained well.
EVERY SINGLE MAINTENANCE SERVICE where "lubricate latches, hinges and locks" was required, the dealerS (yes, three of them) told me they inspected them and applying more lubrication would have been excessive. I'd like to point out, that the wording in the booklet never mentioned an option to "inspect and lubricate if required"
As a side note, and to shed light on these "inspections", another story: as checking tire pressures is part of the 400$ inspections, I aired down one tire. Guess if it has been picked up...
I did check my hinges though and as I have found them in good order and with some lubrication still visible on them, I did not do it myself yet.

I use lithium grease spray for the door hinges and silicone spray for my window guides. Just spray a little where the window meets the rubber trim and it helps the windows slide nice and easy. Any rotating parts that squeak also get a shot of lube.

 

I use dry spray lube on the hinges, door strikers, tailgate latches, window tracks and spare tire assembly twice a year to all my vehicles.



The quality I like most about this is that it is invisible and does not collect dust.
