24 hours of ownership personal observations and opinion:
2022 Chill White Limited 5.5 2WD, panoramic roof, 14.1" screen, connectivity and power group

I will start by saying this is my 71st vehicle in 30 years. Just this year alone, among others, I have owned a 2021 F150 Tremor (402a high), 2021 Silverado RST, 2021 F150 XLT, 2021 Silverado High Country, 2020 Ram Rebel, 2021 Gladiator Rubicon.

I sold my 2021 Tremor in order to buy this truck. Can't say I regret it at all. Overall I LOVE this truck. Like anything, there are a few things I like and a few I don't. Some are just my opinion, some are comparison to previous vehicles, and some are just things I like to have / don't like.

    Exterior:
    Dislikes

Not crazy about the differing materials all over this thing. Pick a color! I have the Chill White, it has matte black fender flares, matte black and gloss mix grille, matte silver grille surround, and chrome. I would prefer a standard matte trim everywhere or gloss everywhere. Pick a scheme and stick with it.

    Likes

The chill white has a very nice depth to it. Everything is solid. No trim pieces out of alignment or blemished. Great craftsmanship. I love the look of this truck. I love how it appears to sit low to the ground. I love the lines. This is a great looking truck.

    Interior:
    Dislikes

As with the exterior, it is a mix/match of colors and materials. I would prefer one color and 2 max material types (leather / plastic). It has leather seats, soft touch dash, matte black trim pieces and gloss trim pieces. Again, pick one and carry throughout.

I have the safe in mine, and it takes up almost all of the center storage. It is an option, but it still takes up space. I will never use it to secure anything, that stays on my hip 24/7! The slide open hatch on the armrest is a neat little feature, but I would prefer a two piece armrest/storage console. A thinner one on top and the deeper one on bottom. I would get more use from that.

    Likes

Again, same as above, everything is great quality. Craftsmanship is excellent. The 14.1" screen is very clear. The infotainment is a little clunky to me, I prefer the newest sync system. That is just a personal opinion though, and I am sure I will adjust to this one. The panoramic roof is nice, my last few trucks have had it.

    Mechanical

The engine is smooth and has good acceleration. This is close to the 400 HP F150 3.5 Turbo that was in my tremor. The gears / torque are different so there is a little difference in feel from take-off, but I will say this is good! The transmission shifts out very nice. I am experiencing a few issues when coming to stop and taking off again. It almost feels like its not shifting into first at stop, like it waits until I accelerate, then drops to first. It is very clunky, but I am chalking that up to it only having 274 miles on it. I expect it to get better.

Overall I rate it a 9 of 10. I take off 1 point for the differing materials inside and out. Other than that, I am 100% satisfied with my purchase. I had an amazing purchasing experience with Magness Toyota in Harrison, Arkansas. I had a local dealer (Tulsa) contact their OKC dealer, whom connected me with Magness.I will for sure recommend them, and I will do business with them again.

All in all, I am a happy owner at this point.

I think he’s guessing you’ll purchase a hybrid or pro.

Tundra is nice but those Tremors are awesome. Would be a hard swap for me

Wow that’s a lot of vehicles. You should definitely do comparisons.

if you wouldn’t mind, can you pick up the at4 and the new TRD pro and give me a comparison ? I’d appreciate it, thanks in advance.

Congrats on the new whip! I agree with the paint schemes and styling.

I think in a year if production has caught up I will be looking for a Platinum. The tremor was super nice! It was hard loaded and had everything (including the price)

Are you a dealer? I'm just trying to wrap my head around the financial cost (loss) of owning 70 cars.

    Not a judgment, just curiosity.

No dealer, but great relationship with several dealers in the area. If you buy right and trade/sell right, its not bad like you may think.

Certainly value the opinion of someone who has owned so many vehicles.

Out of curiosity, since you rate the Tundra as a 9/10, do you feel there are any other half tons out there that are actually a better overall truck?

I do not. I think they all have their positives and negatives. I think for my needs, this truck excels for what I need. I intentionally didn't buy a platinum level this time. I wanted to slim down the overall cost. So comparing this model of Tundra to the Tremor is apples/oranges. I do believe the base sr Tundra has more standard features over Chevy/Ford/Ram though from my research. This one "Feels" like a smaller truck than the others to me, and I like it. It looks lower to the ground. It drives very well. Interior storage wise, the Ram excels, basic tech, the F150 excels. My opinion.

Nice review, do you feel like the higher trims may have reduced the mix and match colors/materials? I’ve gone through my fair share of cars but only 1 truck. I’m coming from a loaded out ‘18 f-150 diesel king ranch to a 1794 and hoping the fit/finish/materials will be at least on par with that truck. Do you think i’ll be pleasantly surprised or meh?

Without seeing one in person I can't answer that question. I will say that a loaded out 2018 will be a very close comparison though. Loaded 2018 = 2-3 trim level of other 2022 from what I see. The "base" model trucks now days are close to the 2-3 tier trim levels of previous years.

The mix match is across all.

Every trim has a mix of black plastic, chrome, body colored, and black vinyl. The only exception is the SR5 TRD Sport. It’s well done and singular .

interiors are mixed materials across the board too. SR5 less than others.

Enjoyed your review. The only interior mix match that is not my ideal pick are the Softex seats. I thought the "see ya in 4 months" comment was local dealer of yours......can't be keeping 71 trucks in 30 years for too long. Show us some pics if you can.

    Damn son.

I thought I lost my marbles going through 5 5th gen 4runners in 4 years. Couldn't make up my mind which one I really wanted after some experience with them.

Also had a Highlander in the mix for 1.5 months. Really missed the 4runner so...

As posted in the op, I am not crazy about the differing materials used and that includes the grille. The styling doesn't bother me so much though.

Just had my 2022 for 24hrs. Was going to comment on the likes / dislikes as well. Canadian SR5 CrewMax Off Road 6.5 box. We don't get to select “options”. A SR5 Off Road up here gets a 8” screen (14” is not available in SR5 trim), power driver and passenger seats, heated seats, heated steering wheel, cloth seats, all the off road stuff and submarine sandwich shelf above the glove box.

This is my fifth Tundra (2010, 13, 15, 18, 22). All where double cab off road.

    Likes:
    - The updated interior.
    - Fit / Finish.
    - Crew max with a 6.5 bed.
    - Nice ride / comfortable seats. I’m 6’3” 250lbs and had to raise the seat. The window arm rest aids in the comfort.
    - I can see all the buttons now.
    - “Hey Toyota”. I can’t always find what I want on the radio yet “Hey Toyota” does. It actually takes direction from the passenger seat as well (as the wife found out). There are two microphones and the reply voice goes to left or right speaker based on who requested. It also limits what the passenger can change with their request.
    - Army Green.

    Dislikes:
    - The radio. I really miss a radio that is a radio when you start the truck. At least it has a volume knob. Carplay has done some weird stuff for me. Probably my issue. Old guy.
    - No embedded navigation. We are headed into the age of we own nothing. $8/month.
    - No lid on the rear storage with the seats folded up. I would put large items on the cover instead of the seats on the old trucks.
    - Wind noise above 40 mph. I believe more people will complain and Toyota will eventually fix this. It sounds like a “white noise generator”. Not loud. But definitely there. The other Tundras I owned did not have this noise.
    - Transmission is not always smooth. Its not bad yet..... I have felt some surging under some conditions. I only make this comment because I am told it is such a wonderful transmission.
    - Engine braking. Does not compare to V8. I have to apply brakes on hills I could engine brake on before.
    - No easy way to step into the box. I was going to use a milk crate but I think Toyota wants $8/month for it. They won’t sell it to me.

    Engine:
My first Tundra was a 4.6 V8. It was fine for what I needed. The 5.7 on the next three trucks was a blast to drive. Had the dual TRD exhaust on the last two. The sound was awesome. This V6 is going to take some time to accept for me. It reminds me if the large diesel trucks at the shop. It grunts from 2,000 to 2,500 as it goes through the 10 gears. With the radio off you can hear the turbos spool up or whistle under the right load. It’s not the same as a V8.

I need more than 24hrs to accept this V6. It feels more like an overgrown Tacoma than a Tundra. If they had a V8 option I would take that with the updated body/chassis. Let’s see how I feel after a year.

Overall I am happy with the truck. It is not a game changer. It is updated to where it should be for 2022. The rear suspension looks like the same set-up as my FJ so old technology that is reliable and works. Typical Toyota. For us with brand loyalty you will like the truck. I’m not worried about any potential issues for an early production truck as Toyota will take care of it. Remember the 5.7 cranks when it first came out??

I’d prefer no embedded navigation as do a lot of people since there’s CarPlay/android auto and you can use google maps or Waze for navigation. Stock vehicle navigation has always been pretty garbage anyways

I looked at a 19 1974 my biggest complaint is the fake wood trim they used in conjunction with the orange leather. Leather looks great, the trim looks cheap AF. I went with a platinum because it just feels way better overall inside.

45 hr update. It snowed last night. Was able to try the DAC down my steep snow covered driveway. I will add this to the LIKE list. Had it on the slowest setting. It worked well.

Can you elaborate on what this means? Obviously my truck has a different infotainment system but I have Carplay/Android Auto and all I have to do is hit the audio button then the FM button to get radio. (I do turn the radio off before I shut the truck off, though.)
You don't own a cellphone? I don't see the appeal of in vehicle nav, especially since Americans can get unlimited data for like $50 a month.
Toyota has said that's exactly what they were going for.
