Official 2022 Tundra 3rd Gen Thread

I was wondering about the DC leg room. I realize now there plenty of room back there for the average guy/5-10/not fat. This is me with the seat set where I was driving and I could go further forward if I needed to.

 

Bro, @bigjuice gave 3 options to the dudes comment about water drainage. None of them portrayed @MRM-07 positively or gave him the benefit of the doubt. Then threw a jab or two at his assessment.

So MRM stated his qualifications to make such assertions and yall went at him for saying he was an engineer. Some harder than others, some in jest (crossfire, etc.)

And now the same people are saying he is overreacting for the shit they threw at him..

I understand why he got annoyed.

Incase any one is wondering about the heated steering wheel. My limited heated steering wheel heats all the way around and it’s awesome. I have heard some people seem to be getting bad wheels

 

Mine seems weak compared to the wife's XT4 that gets very warm but it's fine for me.

Me too.. In my opinion the best looking truck Toyota ever made was the Gen 2 DC Rock Warrior .

I was concerned haveing never seen one before. But I don’t see it being any issue for us.I wouldn’t complain being back there for hours.

 

Probably same canister filter used in the 2018+ Lexus LS500 with the same engine V35A.

 

After YT Tim's comment on the lukewarm steering wheel I was worried.

Maybe his was a one off?

I guess. I have heard others mention it not being very warm and only in two spots. Not the case with mine.

 

It’s great that you’re satisfied … and maybe it’s just the picture but that does not look like much room at all, what, maybe 1/2 inch from knee to seat? If you we’re 6’2” maybe but that looks very snug.

I looked at the 2021 DC and CM and was surprised at how much room they gave the backseat passengers, almost too much. They must have known it too but it’s human nature to over-correct so now we have this.

 

I agree some type of finish on the grille will have a better appearance in the long run. I really wish these manufacturers would come up with plastics that do not fade so bad. Especially when they insist on using so much of it. These are the types of things no one ever presses the engineers on in all those interviews. I guess they just expect people don't keep vehicles long enough to worry about it anymore.

 

It is a grown man sitting in the back of a double cab. It's not going to be as big as the crew max, if you need more room back there, that's what they make the crew max for.

 

Probably over an inch or room and not touching. It’s not like there’s a lot of extra room but again I could go forward more with the seat. To Me the crew max seemed like a bunch of space I wouldn’t ever use. Why do you need 8” of space past your legs I wondered.

 

Oops, I forgot you can’t criticize the 2022 at all. My bad! Wow, is this thread going downhill fast.

 

I don't think he was defending the 2022 as much as just stating if you needed more room to go with the CM.

 

Just saying buy the appropriate truck for your needs. You don't buy the small cab if you are expecting grown men to sit in the back, that's why they make the crew max. Why would they make two cabs built big enough for large people in the back. Double cab is mainly for kids and some storage, crew cab allows adults.

 

Hey all, just traded in my M2C for an allocation on a Lunar Rock SR5 with TRD Sport Premium, Advanced Tech, Premium Audio, etc… went with the crewMax short bed since it will be my DD and horse hauler. Dealer tried to add on $2k to MSRP, but managed to talk them out of the markup.

Interested in hearing about wait times for any builds like mine!

 

I’m curious if anyone knows why they got rid of the passenger cubby on the dash for limited and up trims?

 

Heard it was to improve MPGs

 

They needed a place to put more badging on it.

I went in for an oil change today 20k Toyotacare at the Dealer that’s been pretty good to me in SE WI.

They didn’t have any 2022 Tundras listed on their website. When I pulled in, I saw they had a white Limited TRD OR CM, and inside they had a Blueprint/black limited CM.

For this comparison, I have a 2020 Silver/Black Limited CM with 6kmi on it. I am 6’-2.5” 195lbs.

I first looked at the blue LTD on the showroom floor.

First impression Exterior walkaround. Long/thin, busy, Front/grill looked really good with the Horizontal bars.

Liked the wheels but a little busy mix with all the body lines.

Bed looked small/shallow. Loved rear and front lights. Tailgate odd lines.

Wheel well trim looked OK on the blue, didn’t stand out too much. Mirrors nice.

Overall fit and finish was very good. Only part I didn’t like was the 2nd hood release and lightweight noise closing hood

and flat front of the hood seemed thin.

The Blueprint color is great. Tires were not Bridgestone Duellers, that’s great. Can’t remember Yokahamas?

Interior front seat first impression. Very busy dash layout. Slightly smaller feel to front interior.

Big negatives: smaller steering wheel, small narrow arm rests (compared to G2.5) Seats seemed narrow.

Plenty of room between door & seats for wider seats/arm rests.

Not sure I liked the “black interior” pattern. OK at best first impression. Was perforated vinyl for cooling.

Positives: Seats bolstered a bit. Like shifter. Love phone charger/hold zone 2 of my iphone8+ would fit side by side.

Visibility was very good, love the driver’s side grab handle. The front door pockets can hold beverages. Rear Seat room

seemed quite adequate with my seat in my driving position.

Other observations: There is a slightly higher bump in the rear. The rear window looks smaller. Headroom was adequate

for me, but very close if I sat back in the rear (both had pano roofs). Not a show stopper.


As I was looking the Truck Manager talked to me and asked if I wanted to take a drive in the white TRD LTD on the lot.

He advised both Tundras and a few other cars were special promo vehicles to be used at a Pro sports event. Not for sale.

The drive was limited and was not able to go off their very large lot with plenty of room for acceleration and bumps and

turns in the back. But I was not able to do sustained highway driving or other curvy road drives to disclose that.

Driving notes:

Unusual to not press/depress the Emergency Brake. Automatic.

Could feel smaller diameter steering wheel, nice heated but uneven, not very warm at top, sides good.

The dash controls look small and busy, but actually very efficient simple toggling up and down. Liked.

The ride was very quiet. It did transmit bumps but handled them well. I hit some bumpy areas from 0-

40mph. Not super smooth but comfortable. Would have liked to had out on highway 40-70mph.

Motor was sufficient, was definitely a 6cyl feel & sound. I was able to pin it up to about 50mph (again limited by

back parking drive stretch. I did not hear the turbos when pinned but plenty of power. It was a little mushy on

the acceleration. The piped in sound was OK, but I would shut it off if it’s possible. The transmission was smooth

with the few gears I was using.

The hood view was long and odd with 2 lines angling in as they go forward. More SUV like, did not feel

truck to me. The pano roof was very nice, the power shade is nice (can shade any percent of the pano).

The JBL stereo was so so but didn’t have long to play with it. I did set it on a classic rock station for comparison

and it seemed anemic even in comparison to my 2020 JBL, but to be fair I didn’t get to play with settings much.

The headlights and taillights look very cool when illuminated. The center console arm rests are nice. My dog sits

on my current console (with a cover on it). With the trays in the 22 not sure I’d be doing that.


My final verdict on the 2022 is that it has some really nice features. I personally, and this is just me, am not very fond of the new styling. It’s too busy and long and thin looking. Not horrible, but the front, mid, and rear sections have so many body lines going on and don’t seem to flow well. The front grill looked great on the limited, not at all overwhelming like the pictures. The rear tailgate with the upper bump out and the bumper/body panel parts all seem very busy. The interior has some great features with the screen and controls. I don’t like the narrow seats, door arm rests, and smaller steering wheel. I love the shifter, visibility, drivers side grip, rear view mirror camera. I don’t like the what looks like 2 feet of space under the hood in front the motor. It seems like front styling suffers from the long front end and hood. The TTV6 was adequate but have to admit my bias liking my current 5.7 V8 feel and power delivery at least at the speeds I was able to test both.

I liked a lot about the 22 but the long feeling, the hood view, and busy exterior design have me not impressed me. When I got back in my 2020 I felt more space and comfort and liked the bigger steering wheel and hood view. It felt like a truck. I would miss the V8, the 6cyl did fine, but just didn’t feel right to me. Would I drive the 22 and own one? Sure, but I’m really OK with my 20 for now and will watch and wait as the Gen 3 evolves. I just traded my 2010 SR5 DC on the 2020 2 years ago, so don’t change trucks too often. Maybe the Gen 3 will grow on me. The price nearly $58k on the sticker, would be a steep hurdle I would not be enticed to pay right now. $7k more than my sticker on the 2020. I don’t know what the final price would be since neither of these were for sale.

I’m glad I got to see the 22 in person, and actually get a chance to drive one. There are certainly some very nice features on the 22 but I feel very much satisfied with my 2020 for now and not in a hurry to jump to the new styling or V6 powertrain especially with the higher pricing. That said, I don’t mean to sound negative on the 22s, as there are many positives as I have noted. Go look and see them in person would be my best advice. They do look different in some ways than the picture. If I get a chance, I’d like to drive one on the highway and regular street driving to get a better feel for the ride and handling in those conditions.

 

Which dealer is this? Also from SE WI, and I just ordered one from Toyota Brookfield. They had a 22 SR5 pretty base spec that was already sold, so I got to take a look around it, but no test drive.
